Parse Server: Session update endpoint allows overwriting server-generated session fields

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.57 and 9.6.0-alpha.48, an authenticated user can overwrite server-generated session fields such as expiresAt and createdWith when updating their own session via the REST API. This allows bypassing the server's configured session lifetime policy, making a session effectively permanent. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.57 and 9.6.0-alpha.48.

Parse Server vulnerable to schema poisoning via prototype pollution in deep copy

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to 9.6.0-alpha.20 and 8.6.44, an attacker can bypass the default request keyword denylist protection and the class-level permission for adding fields by sending a crafted request that exploits prototype pollution in the deep copy mechanism. This allows injecting fields into class schemas that have field addition locked down, and can cause permanent schema type conflicts that cannot be resolved even with the master key. In 9.6.0-alpha.20 and 8.6.44, the vulnerable third-party deep copy library has been replaced with a built-in deep clone mechanism that handles prototype properties safely, allowing the existing denylist check to correctly detect and reject the prohibited keyword. No known workarounds are available.

Parse Server session creation endpoint allows overwriting server-generated session fields

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to 9.6.0-alpha.17 and 8.6.42, an authenticated user can overwrite server-generated session fields (`sessionToken`, `expiresAt`, `createdWith`) when creating a session object via `POST /classes/_Session`. This allows bypassing the server's session expiration policy by setting an arbitrary far-future expiration date. It also allows setting a predictable session token value. Starting in version 9.6.0-alpha.17 and 8.6.42, the session creation endpoint filters out server-generated fields from user-supplied data, preventing them from being overwritten. As a workaround, add a `beforeSave` trigger on the `_Session` class to validate and reject or strip any user-supplied values for `sessionToken`, `expiresAt`, and `createdWith`.

Parse Server subject to Incorrect Resource Transfer Between Spheres

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. In versions prior to 4.10.15, or 5.0.0 and above prior to 5.2.6, a user can write to the session object of another user if the session object ID is known. For example, an attacker can assign the session object to their own user by writing to the `user` field and then read any custom fields of that session object. Note that assigning a session to another user does not usually change the privileges of either of the two users, and a user cannot assign their own session to another user. This issue is patched in version 4.10.15 and above, and 5.2.6 and above. To mitigate this issue in unpatched versions add a `beforeSave` trigger to the `_Session` class and prevent writing if the requesting user is different from the user in the session object.

Parse Server's Endpoint `/sessions/me` bypasses `_Session` `protectedFields`

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to 9.8.0-alpha.7 and 8.6.75, the GET /sessions/me endpoint returns _Session fields that the server operator explicitly configured as protected via the protectedFields server option. Any authenticated user can retrieve their own session's protected fields with a single request. The equivalent GET /sessions and GET /sessions/:objectId endpoints correctly strip protected fields. This vulnerability is fixed in 9.8.0-alpha.7 and 8.6.75.

Parse Server: Cloud function validator bypass via prototype chain traversal

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.67 and 9.7.0-alpha.11, an attacker can bypass Cloud Function validator access controls by appending "prototype.constructor" to the function name in the URL. When a Cloud Function handler is declared using the function keyword and its validator is a plain object or arrow function, the trigger store traversal resolves the handler through its own prototype chain while the validator store fails to mirror this traversal, causing all access control enforcement to be skipped. This allows unauthenticated callers to invoke Cloud Functions that are meant to be protected by validators such as requireUser, requireMaster, or custom validation logic. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.67 and 9.7.0-alpha.11.

Parse Server: LiveQuery bypasses CLP pointer permission enforcement

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.53 and 9.6.0-alpha.42, Parse Server's LiveQuery WebSocket interface does not enforce Class-Level Permission (CLP) pointer permissions (readUserFields and pointerFields). Any authenticated user can subscribe to LiveQuery events and receive real-time updates for all objects in classes protected by pointer permissions, regardless of whether the pointer fields on those objects point to the subscribing user. This bypasses the intended read access control, allowing unauthorized access to potentially sensitive data that is correctly restricted via the REST API. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.53 and 9.6.0-alpha.42.

Parse Server: Endpoint `/loginAs` allows `readOnlyMasterKey` to gain full read and write access as any user

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.6 and 9.5.0-alpha.4, the readOnlyMasterKey can call POST /loginAs to obtain a valid session token for any user. This allows a read-only credential to impersonate arbitrary users with full read and write access to their data. Any Parse Server deployment that uses readOnlyMasterKey is affected. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.6 and 9.5.0-alpha.4.

Parse Server ha a bypass of class-level permissions in LiveQuery

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to 9.5.2-alpha.3 and 8.6.16, class-level permissions (CLP) are not enforced for LiveQuery subscriptions. An unauthenticated or unauthorized client can subscribe to any LiveQuery-enabled class and receive real-time events for all objects, regardless of CLP restrictions. All Parse Server deployments that use LiveQuery with class-level permissions are affected. Data intended to be restricted by CLP is leaked to unauthorized subscribers in real time. This vulnerability is fixed in 9.5.2-alpha.3 and 8.6.16.

Parse Server: JWT audience validation bypass in Google, Apple, and Facebook authentication adapters

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.10 and 9.5.0-alpha.11, the Google, Apple, and Facebook authentication adapters use JWT verification to validate identity tokens. When the adapter's audience configuration option is not set (clientId for Google/Apple, appIds for Facebook), JWT verification silently skips audience claim validation. This allows an attacker to use a validly signed JWT issued for a different application to authenticate as any user on the target Parse Server. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.10 and 9.5.0-alpha.11.

Parse Server: File creation and deletion bypasses `readOnlyMasterKey` write restriction

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.5 and 9.5.0-alpha.3, the readOnlyMasterKey can be used to create and delete files via the Files API (POST /files/:filename, DELETE /files/:filename). This bypasses the read-only restriction which violates the access scope of the readOnlyMasterKey. Any Parse Server deployment that uses readOnlyMasterKey and exposes the Files API is affected. An attacker with access to the readOnlyMasterKey can upload arbitrary files or delete existing files. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.5 and 9.5.0-alpha.3.

Parse Server session token exfiltration via `redirectClassNameForKey` query parameter

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to 9.5.2-alpha.8 and 8.6.21, a vulnerability in Parse Server's query handling allows an authenticated or unauthenticated attacker to exfiltrate session tokens of other users by exploiting the redirectClassNameForKey query parameter. Exfiltrated session tokens can be used to take over user accounts. The vulnerability requires the attacker to be able to create or update an object with a new relation field, which depends on the Class-Level Permissions of at least one class. This vulnerability is fixed in 9.5.2-alpha.8 and 8.6.21.

Parse Server: Cloud Hooks and Cloud Jobs bypass `readOnlyMasterKey` write restriction

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to versions 8.6.4 and 9.4.1-alpha.3, Parse Server's readOnlyMasterKey option allows access with master-level read privileges but is documented to deny all write operations. However, some endpoints incorrectly accept the readOnlyMasterKey for mutating operations. This allows a caller who only holds the readOnlyMasterKey to create, modify, and delete Cloud Hooks and to start Cloud Jobs, which can be used for data exfiltration. Any Parse Server deployment that uses the readOnlyMasterKey option is affected. Note than an attacker needs to know the readOnlyMasterKey to exploit this vulnerability. This issue has been patched in versions 8.6.4 and 9.4.1-alpha.3.

New anonymous user session acts as if it's created with password

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Developers can use the REST API to signup users and also allow users to login anonymously. Prior to version 4.5.1, when an anonymous user is first signed up using REST, the server creates session incorrectly. Particularly, the `authProvider` field in `_Session` class under `createdWith` shows the user logged in creating a password. If a developer later depends on the `createdWith` field to provide a different level of access between a password user and anonymous user, the server incorrectly classified the session type as being created with a `password`. The server does not currently use `createdWith` to make decisions about internal functions, so if a developer is not using `createdWith` directly, they are not affected. The vulnerability only affects users who depend on `createdWith` by using it directly. The issue is patched in Parse Server version 4.5.1. As a workaround, do not use the `createdWith` Session field to make decisions if one allows anonymous login.

Apache Artemis, Apache ActiveMQ Artemis: Temporary address auto-created for OpenWire consumer without createAddress permission

Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) vulnerability in Apache Artemis, Apache ActiveMQ Artemis exists when an application using the OpenWire protocol attempts to create a non-durable JMS topic subscription on an address that doesn't exist with an authenticated user which has the "createDurableQueue" permission but does not have the "createAddress" permission and address auto-creation is disabled. In this circumstance, a temporary address will be created whereas the attempt to create the non-durable subscription should instead fail since the user is not authorized to create the corresponding address. When the OpenWire connection is closed the address is removed. This issue affects Apache Artemis: from 2.50.0 through 2.52.0; Apache ActiveMQ Artemis: from 2.0.0 through 2.44.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.53.0, which fixes the issue.

Overlapping policies allow update to non-allowed fields in directus

Directus is a real-time API and App dashboard for managing SQL database content. In affected versions if there are two overlapping policies for the `update` action that allow access to different fields, instead of correctly checking access permissions against the item they apply for the user is allowed to update the superset of fields allowed by any of the policies. E.g. have one policy allowing update access to `field_a` if the `id == 1` and one policy allowing update access to `field_b` if the `id == 2`. The user with both these policies is allowed to update both `field_a` and `field_b` for the items with ids `1` and `2`. Before v11, if a user was allowed to update an item they were allowed to update the fields that the single permission, that applied to that item, listed. With overlapping permissions this isn't as clear cut anymore and the union of fields might not be the fields the user is allowed to update for that specific item. The solution that this PR introduces is to evaluate the permissions for each field that the user tries to update in the validateItemAccess DB query, instead of only verifying access to the item as a whole. This is done by, instead of returning the actual field value, returning a flag that indicates if the user has access to that field. This uses the same case/when mechanism that is used for stripping out non permitted field that is at the core of the permissions engine. As a result, for every item that the access is validated for, the expected result is an item that has either 1 or null for all the "requested" fields instead of any of the actual field values. These results are not useful for anything other than verifying the field level access permissions. The final check in validateItemAccess can either fail if the number of items does not match the number of items the access is checked for (ie. the user does not have access to the item at all) or if not all of the passed in fields have access permissions for any of the returned items. This is a vulnerability that allows update access to unintended fields, potentially impacting the password field for user accounts. This has been addressed in version 11.1.2 and all users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

Kirby's page creation API bypasses the changeStatus permission check via unfiltered isDraft parameter

Kirby is an open-source content management system. Kirby's user permissions control which user role is allowed to perform specific actions to content models in the CMS. These permissions are defined for each role in the user blueprint (`site/blueprints/users/...`). It is also possible to customize the permissions for each target model in the model blueprints (such as in `site/blueprints/pages/...`) using the `options` feature. The permissions and options together control the authorization of user actions. For pages, Kirby provides the `pages.create` and `pages.changeStatus` permissions (among others). Prior to versions 4.9.0 and 5.4.0, Kirby checked these permissions independently and only for the respective action. However the `changeStatus` permission didn't take effect on page creation. New pages are created as drafts by default and need to be published by changing the page status of an existing page draft. This is ensured when the page is created via the Kirby Panel. However the REST API allows to override the `isDraft` flag when creating a new page. This allowed authenticated attackers with the `pages.create` permission to immediately create published pages, bypassing the normal editorial workflow. The problem has been patched in Kirby 4.9.0 and Kirby 5.4.0. Kirby has added a check to the page creation rules that ensures that users without the `pages.changeStatus` permission cannot create published pages, only page drafts.

Ultimate Member <= 2.11.0 - Authenticated (Subscriber+) Profile Privacy Setting Bypass

The Ultimate Member plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Profile Privacy Setting Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 2.11.0.
