bus: mhi: host: pci_generic: Use pci_try_reset_function() to avoid deadlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bus: mhi: host: pci_generic: Use pci_try_reset_function() to avoid deadlock There are multiple places from where the recovery work gets scheduled asynchronously. Also, there are multiple places where the caller waits synchronously for the recovery to be completed. One such place is during the PM shutdown() callback. If the device is not alive during recovery_work, it will try to reset the device using pci_reset_function(). This function internally will take the device_lock() first before resetting the device. By this time, if the lock has already been acquired, then recovery_work will get stalled while waiting for the lock. And if the lock was already acquired by the caller which waits for the recovery_work to be completed, it will lead to deadlock. This is what happened on the X1E80100 CRD device when the device died before shutdown() callback. Driver core calls the driver's shutdown() callback while holding the device_lock() leading to deadlock. And this deadlock scenario can occur on other paths as well, like during the PM suspend() callback, where the driver core would hold the device_lock() before calling driver's suspend() callback. And if the recovery_work was already started, it could lead to deadlock. This is also observed on the X1E80100 CRD. So to fix both issues, use pci_try_reset_function() in recovery_work. This function first checks for the availability of the device_lock() before trying to reset the device. If the lock is available, it will acquire it and reset the device. Otherwise, it will return -EAGAIN. If that happens, recovery_work will fail with the error message "Recovery failed" as not much could be done.

rust_binder: remove spin_lock() in rust_shrink_free_page()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rust_binder: remove spin_lock() in rust_shrink_free_page() When forward-porting Rust Binder to 6.18, I neglected to take commit fb56fdf8b9a2 ("mm/list_lru: split the lock to per-cgroup scope") into account, and apparently I did not end up running the shrinker callback when I sanity tested the driver before submission. This leads to crashes like the following: ============================================ WARNING: possible recursive locking detected 6.18.0-mainline-maybe-dirty #1 Tainted: G IO -------------------------------------------- kswapd0/68 is trying to acquire lock: ffff956000fa18b0 (&l->lock){+.+.}-{2:2}, at: lock_list_lru_of_memcg+0x128/0x230 but task is already holding lock: ffff956000fa18b0 (&l->lock){+.+.}-{2:2}, at: rust_helper_spin_lock+0xd/0x20 other info that might help us debug this: Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 ---- lock(&l->lock); lock(&l->lock); *** DEADLOCK *** May be due to missing lock nesting notation 3 locks held by kswapd0/68: #0: ffffffff90d2e260 (fs_reclaim){+.+.}-{0:0}, at: kswapd+0x597/0x1160 #1: ffff956000fa18b0 (&l->lock){+.+.}-{2:2}, at: rust_helper_spin_lock+0xd/0x20 #2: ffffffff90cf3680 (rcu_read_lock){....}-{1:2}, at: lock_list_lru_of_memcg+0x2d/0x230 To fix this, remove the spin_lock() call from rust_shrink_free_page().

block: Remove queue freezing from several sysfs store callbacks

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: Remove queue freezing from several sysfs store callbacks Freezing the request queue from inside sysfs store callbacks may cause a deadlock in combination with the dm-multipath driver and the queue_if_no_path option. Additionally, freezing the request queue slows down system boot on systems where sysfs attributes are set synchronously. Fix this by removing the blk_mq_freeze_queue() / blk_mq_unfreeze_queue() calls from the store callbacks that do not strictly need these callbacks. Add the __data_racy annotation to request_queue.rq_timeout to suppress KCSAN data race reports about the rq_timeout reads. This patch may cause a small delay in applying the new settings. For all the attributes affected by this patch, I/O will complete correctly whether the old or the new value of the attribute is used. This patch affects the following sysfs attributes: * io_poll_delay * io_timeout * nomerges * read_ahead_kb * rq_affinity Here is an example of a deadlock triggered by running test srp/002 if this patch is not applied: task:multipathd Call Trace: <TASK> __schedule+0x8c1/0x1bf0 schedule+0xdd/0x270 schedule_preempt_disabled+0x1c/0x30 __mutex_lock+0xb89/0x1650 mutex_lock_nested+0x1f/0x30 dm_table_set_restrictions+0x823/0xdf0 __bind+0x166/0x590 dm_swap_table+0x2a7/0x490 do_resume+0x1b1/0x610 dev_suspend+0x55/0x1a0 ctl_ioctl+0x3a5/0x7e0 dm_ctl_ioctl+0x12/0x20 __x64_sys_ioctl+0x127/0x1a0 x64_sys_call+0xe2b/0x17d0 do_syscall_64+0x96/0x3a0 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x4b/0x53 </TASK> task:(udev-worker) Call Trace: <TASK> __schedule+0x8c1/0x1bf0 schedule+0xdd/0x270 blk_mq_freeze_queue_wait+0xf2/0x140 blk_mq_freeze_queue_nomemsave+0x23/0x30 queue_ra_store+0x14e/0x290 queue_attr_store+0x23e/0x2c0 sysfs_kf_write+0xde/0x140 kernfs_fop_write_iter+0x3b2/0x630 vfs_write+0x4fd/0x1390 ksys_write+0xfd/0x230 __x64_sys_write+0x76/0xc0 x64_sys_call+0x276/0x17d0 do_syscall_64+0x96/0x3a0 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x4b/0x53 </TASK>

ublk: fix deadlock when reading partition table

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ublk: fix deadlock when reading partition table When one process(such as udev) opens ublk block device (e.g., to read the partition table via bdev_open()), a deadlock[1] can occur: 1. bdev_open() grabs disk->open_mutex 2. The process issues read I/O to ublk backend to read partition table 3. In __ublk_complete_rq(), blk_update_request() or blk_mq_end_request() runs bio->bi_end_io() callbacks 4. If this triggers fput() on file descriptor of ublk block device, the work may be deferred to current task's task work (see fput() implementation) 5. This eventually calls blkdev_release() from the same context 6. blkdev_release() tries to grab disk->open_mutex again 7. Deadlock: same task waiting for a mutex it already holds The fix is to run blk_update_request() and blk_mq_end_request() with bottom halves disabled. This forces blkdev_release() to run in kernel work-queue context instead of current task work context, and allows ublk server to make forward progress, and avoids the deadlock. drivers: staging: rtl8723bs: Fix locking in _rtw_join_timeout_handler()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drivers: staging: rtl8723bs: Fix locking in _rtw_join_timeout_handler() Commit 041879b12ddb ("drivers: staging: rtl8192bs: Fix deadlock in rtw_joinbss_event_prehandle()") besides fixing the deadlock also modified _rtw_join_timeout_handler() to use spin_[un]lock_irq() instead of spin_[un]lock_bh(). _rtw_join_timeout_handler() calls rtw_do_join() which takes pmlmepriv->scanned_queue.lock using spin_[un]lock_bh(). This spin_unlock_bh() call re-enables softirqs which triggers an oops in kernel/softirq.c: __local_bh_enable_ip() when it calls lockdep_assert_irqs_enabled(): [ 244.506087] WARNING: CPU: 2 PID: 0 at kernel/softirq.c:376 __local_bh_enable_ip+0xa6/0x100 ... Disabling the IRQs is not necessary since all code taking this lock runs from either user contexts or from softirqs, switch back to spin_[un]lock_bh() to fix this.

HID: usbhid: fix deadlock in hid_post_reset()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: usbhid: fix deadlock in hid_post_reset() You can build a USB device that includes a HID component and a storage or UAS component. The components can be reset only together. That means that hid_pre_reset() and hid_post_reset() are in the block IO error handling. Hence no memory allocation used in them may do block IO because the IO can deadlock on the mutex held while resetting a device and calling the interface drivers. Use GFP_NOIO for all allocations in them.

net: ibmveth: make veth_pool_store stop hanging

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ibmveth: make veth_pool_store stop hanging v2: - Created a single error handling unlock and exit in veth_pool_store - Greatly expanded commit message with previous explanatory-only text Summary: Use rtnl_mutex to synchronize veth_pool_store with itself, ibmveth_close and ibmveth_open, preventing multiple calls in a row to napi_disable. Background: Two (or more) threads could call veth_pool_store through writing to /sys/devices/vio/30000002/pool*/*. You can do this easily with a little shell script. This causes a hang. drm/radeon: delete radeon_fence_process in is_signaled, no deadlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/radeon: delete radeon_fence_process in is_signaled, no deadlock Delete the attempt to progress the queue when checking if fence is signaled. This avoids deadlock. dma-fence_ops::signaled can be called with the fence lock in unknown state. For radeon, the fence lock is also the wait queue lock. This can cause a self deadlock when signaled() tries to make forward progress on the wait queue. But advancing the queue is unneeded because incorrectly returning false from signaled() is perfectly acceptable. (cherry picked from commit 527ba26e50ec2ca2be9c7c82f3ad42998a75d0db)

sched_ext: Fix possible deadlock in the deferred_irq_workfn()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sched_ext: Fix possible deadlock in the deferred_irq_workfn() For PREEMPT_RT=y kernels, the deferred_irq_workfn() is executed in the per-cpu irq_work/* task context and not disable-irq, if the rq returned by container_of() is current CPU's rq, the following scenarios may occur: lock(&rq->__lock); <Interrupt> lock(&rq->__lock); This commit use IRQ_WORK_INIT_HARD() to replace init_irq_work() to initialize rq->scx.deferred_irq_work, make the deferred_irq_workfn() is always invoked in hard-irq context.

KVM: arm64: Fix circular locking dependency

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: arm64: Fix circular locking dependency The rule inside kvm enforces that the vcpu->mutex is taken *inside* kvm->lock. The rule is violated by the pkvm_create_hyp_vm() which acquires the kvm->lock while already holding the vcpu->mutex lock from kvm_vcpu_ioctl(). Avoid the circular locking dependency altogether by protecting the hyp vm handle with the config_lock, much like we already do for other forms of VM-scoped data.

In control->start(cb) the dpll_lock is taken. Then nlk->cb_mutex is released and taken again in netlink_dump(), while dpll_lock still being held. That leads to ABBA deadlock when another CPU races with the same operation. Fix this by moving dpll_lock taking into dumpit() callback which ensures correct lock taking order.

drm/amdgpu: handle the case of pci_channel_io_frozen only in amdgpu_pci_resume

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu: handle the case of pci_channel_io_frozen only in amdgpu_pci_resume In current code, when a PCI error state pci_channel_io_normal is detectd, it will report PCI_ERS_RESULT_CAN_RECOVER status to PCI driver, and PCI driver will continue the execution of PCI resume callback report_resume by pci_walk_bridge, and the callback will go into amdgpu_pci_resume finally, where write lock is releasd unconditionally without acquiring such lock first. In this case, a deadlock will happen when other threads start to acquire the read lock. To fix this, add a member in amdgpu_device strucutre to cache pci_channel_state, and only continue the execution in amdgpu_pci_resume when it's pci_channel_io_frozen.

nfsd: fix RELEASE_LOCKOWNER

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: fix RELEASE_LOCKOWNER The test on so_count in nfsd4_release_lockowner() is nonsense and harmful. Revert to using check_for_locks(), changing that to not sleep. First: harmful. As is documented in the kdoc comment for nfsd4_release_lockowner(), the test on so_count can transiently return a false positive resulting in a return of NFS4ERR_LOCKS_HELD when in fact no locks are held. This is clearly a protocol violation and with the Linux NFS client it can cause incorrect behaviour. If RELEASE_LOCKOWNER is sent while some other thread is still processing a LOCK request which failed because, at the time that request was received, the given owner held a conflicting lock, then the nfsd thread processing that LOCK request can hold a reference (conflock) to the lock owner that causes nfsd4_release_lockowner() to return an incorrect error. The Linux NFS client ignores that NFS4ERR_LOCKS_HELD error because it never sends NFS4_RELEASE_LOCKOWNER without first releasing any locks, so it knows that the error is impossible. It assumes the lock owner was in fact released so it feels free to use the same lock owner identifier in some later locking request. When it does reuse a lock owner identifier for which a previous RELEASE failed, it will naturally use a lock_seqid of zero. However the server, which didn't release the lock owner, will expect a larger lock_seqid and so will respond with NFS4ERR_BAD_SEQID. So clearly it is harmful to allow a false positive, which testing so_count allows. The test is nonsense because ... well... it doesn't mean anything. so_count is the sum of three different counts. 1/ the set of states listed on so_stateids 2/ the set of active vfs locks owned by any of those states 3/ various transient counts such as for conflicting locks. When it is tested against '2' it is clear that one of these is the transient reference obtained by find_lockowner_str_locked(). It is not clear what the other one is expected to be. In practice, the count is often 2 because there is precisely one state on so_stateids. If there were more, this would fail. In my testing I see two circumstances when RELEASE_LOCKOWNER is called. In one case, CLOSE is called before RELEASE_LOCKOWNER. That results in all the lock states being removed, and so the lockowner being discarded (it is removed when there are no more references which usually happens when the lock state is discarded). When nfsd4_release_lockowner() finds that the lock owner doesn't exist, it returns success. The other case shows an so_count of '2' and precisely one state listed in so_stateid. It appears that the Linux client uses a separate lock owner for each file resulting in one lock state per lock owner, so this test on '2' is safe. For another client it might not be safe. So this patch changes check_for_locks() to use the (newish) find_any_file_locked() so that it doesn't take a reference on the nfs4_file and so never calls nfsd_file_put(), and so never sleeps. With this check is it safe to restore the use of check_for_locks() rather than testing so_count against the mysterious '2'.

scsi: sg: Resolve soft lockup issue when opening /dev/sgX

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: sg: Resolve soft lockup issue when opening /dev/sgX The parameter def_reserved_size defines the default buffer size reserved for each Sg_fd and should be restricted to a range between 0 and 1,048,576 (see https://tldp.org/HOWTO/SCSI-Generic-HOWTO/proc.html). netfilter: nf_tables: release mutex after nft_gc_seq_end from abort path

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_tables: release mutex after nft_gc_seq_end from abort path The commit mutex should not be released during the critical section between nft_gc_seq_begin() and nft_gc_seq_end(), otherwise, async GC worker could collect expired objects and get the released commit lock within the same GC sequence. nf_tables_module_autoload() temporarily releases the mutex to load module dependencies, then it goes back to replay the transaction again. Move it at the end of the abort phase after nft_gc_seq_end() is called.

nilfs2: fix hang in nilfs_lookup_dirty_data_buffers()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: fix hang in nilfs_lookup_dirty_data_buffers() Syzbot reported a hang issue in migrate_pages_batch() called by mbind() and nilfs_lookup_dirty_data_buffers() called in the log writer of nilfs2. While migrate_pages_batch() locks a folio and waits for the writeback to complete, the log writer thread that should bring the writeback to completion picks up the folio being written back in nilfs_lookup_dirty_data_buffers() that it calls for subsequent log creation and was trying to lock the folio. Thus causing a deadlock. In the first place, it is unexpected that folios/pages in the middle of writeback will be updated and become dirty. Nilfs2 adds a checksum to verify the validity of the log being written and uses it for recovery at mount, so data changes during writeback are suppressed. Since this is broken, an unclean shutdown could potentially cause recovery to fail. Investigation revealed that the root cause is that the wait for writeback completion in nilfs_page_mkwrite() is conditional, and if the backing device does not require stable writes, data may be modified without waiting. Fix these issues by making nilfs_page_mkwrite() wait for writeback to finish regardless of the stable write requirement of the backing device.

erofs: handle overlapped pclusters out of crafted images properly

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: erofs: handle overlapped pclusters out of crafted images properly syzbot reported a task hang issue due to a deadlock case where it is waiting for the folio lock of a cached folio that will be used for cache I/Os. After looking into the crafted fuzzed image, I found it's formed with several overlapped big pclusters as below: Ext: logical offset | length : physical offset | length 0: 0.. 16384 | 16384 : 151552.. 167936 | 16384 1: 16384.. 32768 | 16384 : 155648.. 172032 | 16384 2: 32768.. 49152 | 16384 : 537223168.. 537239552 | 16384 ... Here, extent 0/1 are physically overlapped although it's entirely _impossible_ for normal filesystem images generated by mkfs. First, managed folios containing compressed data will be marked as up-to-date and then unlocked immediately (unlike in-place folios) when compressed I/Os are complete. If physical blocks are not submitted in the incremental order, there should be separate BIOs to avoid dependency issues. However, the current code mis-arranges z_erofs_fill_bio_vec() and BIO submission which causes unexpected BIO waits. Second, managed folios will be connected to their own pclusters for efficient inter-queries. However, this is somewhat hard to implement easily if overlapped big pclusters exist. Again, these only appear in fuzzed images so let's simply fall back to temporary short-lived pages for correctness. Additionally, it justifies that referenced managed folios cannot be truncated for now and reverts part of commit 2080ca1ed3e4 ("erofs: tidy up `struct z_erofs_bvec`") for simplicity although it shouldn't be any difference.

x86/shstk: Prevent deadlock during shstk sigreturn

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: x86/shstk: Prevent deadlock during shstk sigreturn During sigreturn the shadow stack signal frame is popped. The kernel does this by reading the shadow stack using normal read accesses. When it can't assume the memory is shadow stack, it takes extra steps to makes sure it is reading actual shadow stack memory and not other normal readable memory. It does this by holding the mmap read lock while doing the access and checking the flags of the VMA. Unfortunately that is not safe. If the read of the shadow stack sigframe hits a page fault, the fault handler will try to recursively grab another mmap read lock. This normally works ok, but if a writer on another CPU is also waiting, the second read lock could fail and cause a deadlock. Fix this by not holding mmap lock during the read access to userspace. Instead use mmap_lock_speculate_...() to watch for changes between dropping mmap lock and the userspace access. Retry if anything grabbed an mmap write lock in between and could have changed the VMA. These mmap_lock_speculate_...() helpers use mm::mm_lock_seq, which is only available when PER_VMA_LOCK is configured. So make X86_USER_SHADOW_STACK depend on it. On x86, PER_VMA_LOCK is a default configuration for SMP kernels. So drop support for the other configs under the assumption that the !SMP shadow stack user base does not exist. Currently there is a check that skips the lookup work when the SSP can be assumed to be on a shadow stack. While reorganizing the function, remove the optimization to make the tricky code flows more common, such that issues like this cannot escape detection for so long.

openvswitch: vport: fix self-deadlock on release of tunnel ports

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: openvswitch: vport: fix self-deadlock on release of tunnel ports vports are used concurrently and protected by RCU, so netdev_put() must happen after the RCU grace period. So, either in an RCU call or after the synchronize_net(). The rtnl_delete_link() must happen under RTNL and so can't be executed in RCU context. Calling synchronize_net() while holding RTNL is not a good idea for performance and system stability under load in general, so calling netdev_put() in RCU call is the right solution here. However, when the device is deleted, rtnl_unlock() will call netdev_run_todo() and block until all the references are gone. In the current code this means that we never reach the call_rcu() and the vport is never freed and the reference is never released, causing a self-deadlock on device removal. Fix that by moving the rcu_call() before the rtnl_unlock(), so the scheduled RCU callback will be executed when synchronize_net() is called from the rtnl_unlock()->netdev_run_todo() while the RTNL itself is already released.

md/raid5: fix soft lockup in retry_aligned_read()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: md/raid5: fix soft lockup in retry_aligned_read() When retry_aligned_read() encounters an overlapped stripe, it releases the stripe via raid5_release_stripe() which puts it on the lockless released_stripes llist. In the next raid5d loop iteration, release_stripe_list() drains the stripe onto handle_list (since STRIPE_HANDLE is set by the original IO), but retry_aligned_read() runs before handle_active_stripes() and removes the stripe from handle_list via find_get_stripe() -> list_del_init(). This prevents handle_stripe() from ever processing the stripe to resolve the overlap, causing an infinite loop and soft lockup. Fix this by using __release_stripe() with temp_inactive_list instead of raid5_release_stripe() in the failure path, so the stripe does not go through the released_stripes llist. This allows raid5d to break out of its loop, and the overlap will be resolved when the stripe is eventually processed by handle_stripe().

NFS/localio: prevent direct reclaim recursion into NFS via nfs_writepages

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFS/localio: prevent direct reclaim recursion into NFS via nfs_writepages LOCALIO is an NFS loopback mount optimization that avoids using the network for READ, WRITE and COMMIT if the NFS client and server are determined to be on the same system. But because LOCALIO is still fundamentally "just NFS loopback mount" it is susceptible to recursion deadlock via direct reclaim, e.g.: NFS LOCALIO down to XFS and then back into NFS via nfs_writepages. Fix LOCALIO's potential for direct reclaim deadlock by ensuring that all its page cache allocations are done from GFP_NOFS context. Thanks to Ben Coddington for pointing out commit ad22c7a043c2 ("xfs: prevent stack overflows from page cache allocation").

net: switchdev: Convert blocking notification chain to a raw one

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: switchdev: Convert blocking notification chain to a raw one A blocking notification chain uses a read-write semaphore to protect the integrity of the chain. The semaphore is acquired for writing when adding / removing notifiers to / from the chain and acquired for reading when traversing the chain and informing notifiers about an event. In case of the blocking switchdev notification chain, recursive notifications are possible which leads to the semaphore being acquired twice for reading and to lockdep warnings being generated [1]. Specifically, this can happen when the bridge driver processes a SWITCHDEV_BRPORT_UNOFFLOADED event which causes it to emit notifications about deferred events when calling switchdev_deferred_process(). Fix this by converting the notification chain to a raw notification chain in a similar fashion to the netdev notification chain. Protect the chain using the RTNL mutex by acquiring it when modifying the chain. Events are always informed under the RTNL mutex, but add an assertion in call_switchdev_blocking_notifiers() to make sure this is not violated in the future. Maintain the "blocking" prefix as events are always emitted from process context and listeners are allowed to block. ASoC: fsl_xcvr: Revert fix missing lock in fsl_xcvr_mode_put()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: fsl_xcvr: Revert fix missing lock in fsl_xcvr_mode_put() This reverts commit f51424872760 ("ASoC: fsl_xcvr: fix missing lock in fsl_xcvr_mode_put()"). The original patch attempted to acquire the card->controls_rwsem lock in fsl_xcvr_mode_put(). However, this function is called from the upper ALSA core function snd_ctl_elem_write(), which already holds the write lock on controls_rwsem for the whole put operation. So there is no need to simply hold the lock for fsl_xcvr_activate_ctl() again. Acquiring the read lock while holding the write lock in the same thread results in a deadlock and a hung task, as reported by Alexander Stein.

rhashtable: Fix potential deadlock by moving schedule_work outside lock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rhashtable: Fix potential deadlock by moving schedule_work outside lock Move the hash table growth check and work scheduling outside the rht lock to prevent a possible circular locking dependency. The original implementation could trigger a lockdep warning due to a potential deadlock scenario involving nested locks between rhashtable bucket, rq lock, and dsq lock. By relocating the growth check and work scheduling after releasing the rth lock, we break this potential deadlock chain. This change expands the flexibility of rhashtable by removing restrictive locking that previously limited its use in scheduler and workqueue contexts. Import to say that this calls rht_grow_above_75(), which reads from struct rhashtable without holding the lock, if this is a problem, we can move the check to the lock, and schedule the workqueue after the lock. Modified so that atomic_inc is also moved outside of the bucket lock along with the growth above 75% check.

ALSA: us122l: Use snd_card_free_when_closed() at disconnection

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: us122l: Use snd_card_free_when_closed() at disconnection The USB disconnect callback is supposed to be short and not too-long waiting. OTOH, the current code uses snd_card_free() at disconnection, but this waits for the close of all used fds, hence it can take long. It eventually blocks the upper layer USB ioctls, which may trigger a soft lockup. An easy workaround is to replace snd_card_free() with snd_card_free_when_closed(). This variant returns immediately while the release of resources is done asynchronously by the card device release at the last close. The loop of us122l->mmap_count check is dropped as well. The check is useless for the asynchronous operation with *_when_closed().

regulator: core: fix locking in regulator_resolve_supply() error path

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: regulator: core: fix locking in regulator_resolve_supply() error path If late enabling of a supply regulator fails in regulator_resolve_supply(), the code currently triggers a lockdep warning: WARNING: drivers/regulator/core.c:2649 at _regulator_put+0x80/0xa0, CPU#6: kworker/u32:4/596 ... Call trace: _regulator_put+0x80/0xa0 (P) regulator_resolve_supply+0x7cc/0xbe0 regulator_register_resolve_supply+0x28/0xb8 as the regulator_list_mutex must be held when calling _regulator_put(). To solve this, simply switch to using regulator_put(). While at it, we should also make sure that no concurrent access happens to our rdev while we clear out the supply pointer. Add appropriate locking to ensure that. While the code in question will be removed altogether in a follow-up commit, I believe it is still beneficial to have this corrected before removal for future reference.

fuse: use exclusive lock when FUSE_I_CACHE_IO_MODE is set

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fuse: use exclusive lock when FUSE_I_CACHE_IO_MODE is set This may be a typo. The comment has said shared locks are not allowed when this bit is set. If using shared lock, the wait in `fuse_file_cached_io_open` may be forever.

jbd2: fix deadlock in jbd2_journal_cancel_revoke()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jbd2: fix deadlock in jbd2_journal_cancel_revoke() Commit f76d4c28a46a ("fs/jbd2: use sleeping version of __find_get_block()") changed jbd2_journal_cancel_revoke() to use __find_get_block_nonatomic() which holds the folio lock instead of i_private_lock. This breaks the lock ordering (folio -> buffer) and causes an ABBA deadlock when the filesystem blocksize < pagesize: T1 T2 ext4_mkdir() ext4_init_new_dir() ext4_append() ext4_getblk() lock_buffer() <- A sync_blockdev() blkdev_writepages() writeback_iter() writeback_get_folio() folio_lock() <- B ext4_journal_get_create_access() jbd2_journal_cancel_revoke() __find_get_block_nonatomic() folio_lock() <- B block_write_full_folio() lock_buffer() <- A This can occasionally cause generic/013 to hang. Fix by only calling __find_get_block_nonatomic() when the passed buffer_head doesn't belong to the bdev, which is the only case that we need to look up its bdev alias. Otherwise, the lookup is redundant since the found buffer_head is equal to the one we passed in.

md/raid10: fix deadlock with check operation and nowait requests

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: md/raid10: fix deadlock with check operation and nowait requests When an array check is running it will raise the barrier at which point normal requests will become blocked and increment the nr_pending value to signal there is work pending inside of wait_barrier(). NOWAIT requests do not block and so will return immediately with an error, and additionally do not increment nr_pending in wait_barrier(). Upstream change commit 43806c3d5b9b ("raid10: cleanup memleak at raid10_make_request") added a call to raid_end_bio_io() to fix a memory leak when NOWAIT requests hit this condition. raid_end_bio_io() eventually calls allow_barrier() and it will unconditionally do an atomic_dec_and_test(&conf->nr_pending) even though the corresponding increment on nr_pending didn't happen in the NOWAIT case. This can be easily seen by starting a check operation while an application is doing nowait IO on the same array. This results in a deadlocked state due to nr_pending value underflowing and so the md resync thread gets stuck waiting for nr_pending to == 0. Output of r10conf state of the array when we hit this condition: crash> struct r10conf barrier = 1, nr_pending = { counter = -41 }, nr_waiting = 15, nr_queued = 0, Example of md_sync thread stuck waiting on raise_barrier() and other requests stuck in wait_barrier(): md1_resync [<0>] raise_barrier+0xce/0x1c0 [<0>] raid10_sync_request+0x1ca/0x1ed0 [<0>] md_do_sync+0x779/0x1110 [<0>] md_thread+0x90/0x160 [<0>] kthread+0xbe/0xf0 [<0>] ret_from_fork+0x34/0x50 [<0>] ret_from_fork_asm+0x1a/0x30 kworker/u1040:2+flush-253:4 [<0>] wait_barrier+0x1de/0x220 [<0>] regular_request_wait+0x30/0x180 [<0>] raid10_make_request+0x261/0x1000 [<0>] md_handle_request+0x13b/0x230 [<0>] __submit_bio+0x107/0x1f0 [<0>] submit_bio_noacct_nocheck+0x16f/0x390 [<0>] ext4_io_submit+0x24/0x40 [<0>] ext4_do_writepages+0x254/0xc80 [<0>] ext4_writepages+0x84/0x120 [<0>] do_writepages+0x7a/0x260 [<0>] __writeback_single_inode+0x3d/0x300 [<0>] writeback_sb_inodes+0x1dd/0x470 [<0>] __writeback_inodes_wb+0x4c/0xe0 [<0>] wb_writeback+0x18b/0x2d0 [<0>] wb_workfn+0x2a1/0x400 [<0>] process_one_work+0x149/0x330 [<0>] worker_thread+0x2d2/0x410 [<0>] kthread+0xbe/0xf0 [<0>] ret_from_fork+0x34/0x50 [<0>] ret_from_fork_asm+0x1a/0x30

firmware: arm_ffa: Replace mutex with rwlock to avoid sleep in atomic context

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: firmware: arm_ffa: Replace mutex with rwlock to avoid sleep in atomic context The current use of a mutex to protect the notifier hashtable accesses can lead to issues in the atomic context. It results in the below kernel warnings: | BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at kernel/locking/mutex.c:258 | in_atomic(): 1, irqs_disabled(): 1, non_block: 0, pid: 9, name: kworker/0:0 | preempt_count: 1, expected: 0 | RCU nest depth: 0, expected: 0 | CPU: 0 UID: 0 PID: 9 Comm: kworker/0:0 Not tainted 6.14.0 #4 | Workqueue: ffa_pcpu_irq_notification notif_pcpu_irq_work_fn | Call trace: | show_stack+0x18/0x24 (C) | dump_stack_lvl+0x78/0x90 | dump_stack+0x18/0x24 | __might_resched+0x114/0x170 | __might_sleep+0x48/0x98 | mutex_lock+0x24/0x80 | handle_notif_callbacks+0x54/0xe0 | notif_get_and_handle+0x40/0x88 | generic_exec_single+0x80/0xc0 | smp_call_function_single+0xfc/0x1a0 | notif_pcpu_irq_work_fn+0x2c/0x38 | process_one_work+0x14c/0x2b4 | worker_thread+0x2e4/0x3e0 | kthread+0x13c/0x210 | ret_from_fork+0x10/0x20 To address this, replace the mutex with an rwlock to protect the notifier hashtable accesses. This ensures that read-side locking does not sleep and multiple readers can acquire the lock concurrently, avoiding unnecessary contention and potential deadlocks. Writer access remains exclusive, preserving correctness. This change resolves warnings from lockdep about potential sleep in atomic context.

net: mscc: ocelot: add missing lock protection in ocelot_port_xmit_inj()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: mscc: ocelot: add missing lock protection in ocelot_port_xmit_inj() ocelot_port_xmit_inj() calls ocelot_can_inject() and ocelot_port_inject_frame() without holding the injection group lock. Both functions contain lockdep_assert_held() for the injection lock, and the correct caller felix_port_deferred_xmit() properly acquires the lock using ocelot_lock_inj_grp() before calling these functions. Add ocelot_lock_inj_grp()/ocelot_unlock_inj_grp() around the register injection path to fix the missing lock protection. The FDMA path is not affected as it uses its own locking mechanism.

net: phy: transfer phy_config_inband() locking responsibility to phylink

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: phy: transfer phy_config_inband() locking responsibility to phylink Problem description =================== Lockdep reports a possible circular locking dependency (AB/BA) between &pl->state_mutex and &phy->lock, as follows. phylink_resolve() // acquires &pl->state_mutex -> phylink_major_config() -> phy_config_inband() // acquires &pl->phydev->lock whereas all the other call sites where &pl->state_mutex and &pl->phydev->lock have the locking scheme reversed. Everywhere else, &pl->phydev->lock is acquired at the top level, and &pl->state_mutex at the lower level. A clear example is phylink_bringup_phy(). The outlier is the newly introduced phy_config_inband() and the existing lock order is the correct one. To understand why it cannot be the other way around, it is sufficient to consider phylink_phy_change(), phylink's callback from the PHY device's phy->phy_link_change() virtual method, invoked by the PHY state machine. phy_link_up() and phy_link_down(), the (indirect) callers of phylink_phy_change(), are called with &phydev->lock acquired. Then phylink_phy_change() acquires its own &pl->state_mutex, to serialize changes made to its pl->phy_state and pl->link_config. So all other instances of &pl->state_mutex and &phydev->lock must be consistent with this order. Problem impact ============== I think the kernel runs a serious deadlock risk if an existing phylink_resolve() thread, which results in a phy_config_inband() call, is concurrent with a phy_link_up() or phy_link_down() call, which will deadlock on &pl->state_mutex in phylink_phy_change(). Practically speaking, the impact may be limited by the slow speed of the medium auto-negotiation protocol, which makes it unlikely for the current state to still be unresolved when a new one is detected, but I think the problem is there. Nonetheless, the problem was discovered using lockdep. Proposed solution ================= Practically speaking, the phy_config_inband() requirement of having phydev->lock acquired must transfer to the caller (phylink is the only caller). There, it must bubble up until immediately before &pl->state_mutex is acquired, for the cases where that takes place. Solution details, considerations, notes ======================================= This is the phy_config_inband() call graph: sfp_upstream_ops :: connect_phy() | v phylink_sfp_connect_phy() | v phylink_sfp_config_phy() | | sfp_upstream_ops :: module_insert() | | | v | phylink_sfp_module_insert() | | | | sfp_upstream_ops :: module_start() | | | | | v | | phylink_sfp_module_start() | | | | v v | phylink_sfp_config_optical() phylink_start() | | | phylink_resume() v v | | phylink_sfp_set_config() | | | v v v phylink_mac_initial_config() | phylink_resolve() | | phylink_ethtool_ksettings_set() v v v phylink_major_config() | v phy_config_inband() phylink_major_config() caller #1, phylink_mac_initial_config(), does not acquire &pl->state_mutex nor do its callers. It must acquire &pl->phydev->lock prior to calling phylink_major_config(). phylink_major_config() caller #2, phylink_resolve() acquires &pl->state_mutex, thus also needs to acquire &pl->phydev->lock. phylink_major_config() caller #3, phylink_ethtool_ksettings_set(), is completely uninteresting, because it only call ---truncated---

The user supplied buffer to hold the fiemap information page faults calling ocfs2_page_mkwrite() which will take a write lock (since v2.6.27-38-g00dc417fa3e7) of the same semaphore. This recursive semaphore will hold filesystem locks and causes a hang of the fileystem. The ip_alloc_sem protects the inode extent list and size. Release the read semphore before calling fiemap_fill_next_extent() in ocfs2_fiemap() and ocfs2_fiemap_inline(). This does an unnecessary semaphore lock/unlock on the last extent but simplifies the error path.

dm: dm-crypt: Do not partially accept write BIOs with zoned targets

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm: dm-crypt: Do not partially accept write BIOs with zoned targets Read and write operations issued to a dm-crypt target may be split according to the dm-crypt internal limits defined by the max_read_size and max_write_size module parameters (default is 128 KB). The intent is to improve processing time of large BIOs by splitting them into smaller operations that can be parallelized on different CPUs. For zoned dm-crypt targets, this BIO splitting is still done but without the parallel execution to ensure that the issuing order of write operations to the underlying devices remains sequential. However, the splitting itself causes other problems: 1) Since dm-crypt relies on the block layer zone write plugging to handle zone append emulation using regular write operations, the reminder of a split write BIO will always be plugged into the target zone write plugged. Once the on-going write BIO finishes, this reminder BIO is unplugged and issued from the zone write plug work. If this reminder BIO itself needs to be split, the reminder will be re-issued and plugged again, but that causes a call to a blk_queue_enter(), which may block if a queue freeze operation was initiated. This results in a deadlock as DM submission still holds BIOs that the queue freeze side is waiting for. 2) dm-crypt relies on the emulation done by the block layer using regular write operations for processing zone append operations. This still requires to properly return the written sector as the BIO sector of the original BIO. However, this can be done correctly only and only if there is a single clone BIO used for processing the original zone append operation issued by the user. If the size of a zone append operation is larger than dm-crypt max_write_size, then the orginal BIO will be split and processed as a chain of regular write operations. Such chaining result in an incorrect written sector being returned to the zone append issuer using the original BIO sector. This in turn results in file system data corruptions using xfs or btrfs. Fix this by modifying get_max_request_size() to always return the size of the BIO to avoid it being split with dm_accpet_partial_bio() in crypt_map(). get_max_request_size() is renamed to get_max_request_sectors() to clarify the unit of the value returned and its interface is changed to take a struct dm_target pointer and a pointer to the struct bio being processed. In addition to this change, to ensure that crypt_alloc_buffer() works correctly, set the dm-crypt device max_hw_sectors limit to be at most BIO_MAX_VECS << PAGE_SECTORS_SHIFT (1 MB with a 4KB page architecture). This forces DM core to split write BIOs before passing them to crypt_map(), and thus guaranteeing that dm-crypt can always accept an entire write BIO without needing to split it. This change does not have any effect on the read path of dm-crypt. Read operations can still be split and the BIO fragments processed in parallel. There is also no impact on the performance of the write path given that all zone write BIOs were already processed inline instead of in parallel. This change also does not affect in any way regular dm-crypt block devices.
