netfilter: ipset: fix region locking in hash types

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: ipset: fix region locking in hash types Region locking introduced in v5.6-rc4 contained three macros to handle the region locks: ahash_bucket_start(), ahash_bucket_end() which gave back the start and end hash bucket values belonging to a given region lock and ahash_region() which should give back the region lock belonging to a given hash bucket. The latter was incorrect which can lead to a race condition between the garbage collector and adding new elements when a hash type of set is defined with timeouts.

wifi: iwlwifi: Use request_module_nowait

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlwifi: Use request_module_nowait This appears to work around a deadlock regression that came in with the LED merge in 6.9. The deadlock happens on my system with 24 iwlwifi radios, so maybe it something like all worker threads are busy and some work that needs to complete cannot complete. [also remove unnecessary "load_module" var and now-wrong comment]

usb: typec: ucsi: displayport: Fix deadlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: typec: ucsi: displayport: Fix deadlock This patch introduces the ucsi_con_mutex_lock / ucsi_con_mutex_unlock functions to the UCSI driver. ucsi_con_mutex_lock ensures the connector mutex is only locked if a connection is established and the partner pointer is valid. This resolves a deadlock scenario where ucsi_displayport_remove_partner holds con->mutex waiting for dp_altmode_work to complete while dp_altmode_work attempts to acquire it.

dmaengine: idxd: Convert spinlock to mutex to lock evl workqueue

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dmaengine: idxd: Convert spinlock to mutex to lock evl workqueue drain_workqueue() cannot be called safely in a spinlocked context due to possible task rescheduling. In the multi-task scenario, calling queue_work() while drain_workqueue() will lead to a Call Trace as pushing a work on a draining workqueue is not permitted in spinlocked context. Call Trace: <TASK> ? __warn+0x7d/0x140 ? __queue_work+0x2b2/0x440 ? report_bug+0x1f8/0x200 ? handle_bug+0x3c/0x70 ? exc_invalid_op+0x18/0x70 ? asm_exc_invalid_op+0x1a/0x20 ? __queue_work+0x2b2/0x440 queue_work_on+0x28/0x30 idxd_misc_thread+0x303/0x5a0 [idxd] ? __schedule+0x369/0xb40 ? __pfx_irq_thread_fn+0x10/0x10 ? irq_thread+0xbc/0x1b0 irq_thread_fn+0x21/0x70 irq_thread+0x102/0x1b0 ? preempt_count_add+0x74/0xa0 ? __pfx_irq_thread_dtor+0x10/0x10 ? __pfx_irq_thread+0x10/0x10 kthread+0x103/0x140 ? __pfx_kthread+0x10/0x10 ret_from_fork+0x31/0x50 ? __pfx_kthread+0x10/0x10 ret_from_fork_asm+0x1b/0x30 </TASK> The current implementation uses a spinlock to protect event log workqueue and will lead to the Call Trace due to potential task rescheduling. To address the locking issue, convert the spinlock to mutex, allowing the drain_workqueue() to be called in a safe mutex-locked context. This change ensures proper synchronization when accessing the event log workqueue, preventing potential Call Trace and improving the overall robustness of the code.

accel/ivpu: Fix locking order in ivpu_job_submit

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: accel/ivpu: Fix locking order in ivpu_job_submit Fix deadlock in job submission and abort handling. When a thread aborts currently executing jobs due to a fault, it first locks the global lock protecting submitted_jobs (#1). After the last job is destroyed, it proceeds to release the related context and locks file_priv (#2). Meanwhile, in the job submission thread, the file_priv lock (#2) is taken first, and then the submitted_jobs lock (#1) is obtained when a job is added to the submitted jobs list. CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- (for example due to a fault) (jobs submissions keep coming) lock(&vdev->submitted_jobs_lock) #1 ivpu_jobs_abort_all() job_destroy() lock(&file_priv->lock) #2 lock(&vdev->submitted_jobs_lock) #1 file_priv_release() lock(&vdev->context_list_lock) lock(&file_priv->lock) #2 This order of locking causes a deadlock. To resolve this issue, change the order of locking in ivpu_job_submit().

firmware: arm_ffa: Replace mutex with rwlock to avoid sleep in atomic context

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: firmware: arm_ffa: Replace mutex with rwlock to avoid sleep in atomic context The current use of a mutex to protect the notifier hashtable accesses can lead to issues in the atomic context. It results in the below kernel warnings: | BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at kernel/locking/mutex.c:258 | in_atomic(): 1, irqs_disabled(): 1, non_block: 0, pid: 9, name: kworker/0:0 | preempt_count: 1, expected: 0 | RCU nest depth: 0, expected: 0 | CPU: 0 UID: 0 PID: 9 Comm: kworker/0:0 Not tainted 6.14.0 #4 | Workqueue: ffa_pcpu_irq_notification notif_pcpu_irq_work_fn | Call trace: | show_stack+0x18/0x24 (C) | dump_stack_lvl+0x78/0x90 | dump_stack+0x18/0x24 | __might_resched+0x114/0x170 | __might_sleep+0x48/0x98 | mutex_lock+0x24/0x80 | handle_notif_callbacks+0x54/0xe0 | notif_get_and_handle+0x40/0x88 | generic_exec_single+0x80/0xc0 | smp_call_function_single+0xfc/0x1a0 | notif_pcpu_irq_work_fn+0x2c/0x38 | process_one_work+0x14c/0x2b4 | worker_thread+0x2e4/0x3e0 | kthread+0x13c/0x210 | ret_from_fork+0x10/0x20 To address this, replace the mutex with an rwlock to protect the notifier hashtable accesses. This ensures that read-side locking does not sleep and multiple readers can acquire the lock concurrently, avoiding unnecessary contention and potential deadlocks. Writer access remains exclusive, preserving correctness. This change resolves warnings from lockdep about potential sleep in atomic context.

Both of these operations require acquiring the netdev instance lock. Move the call to `packet_dev_mc` outside of the RCU critical section. The `mclist` modifications (add, del, flush, unregister) are protected by the RTNL, not the RCU. The RCU only protects the `sklist` and its associated `sks`. The delayed operation on the `mclist` entry remains within the RTNL.

ftrace: Add cond_resched() to ftrace_graph_set_hash()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ftrace: Add cond_resched() to ftrace_graph_set_hash() When the kernel contains a large number of functions that can be traced, the loop in ftrace_graph_set_hash() may take a lot of time to execute. This may trigger the softlockup watchdog. Add cond_resched() within the loop to allow the kernel to remain responsive even when processing a large number of functions. This matches the cond_resched() that is used in other locations of the code that iterates over all functions that can be traced.

HID: i2c-hid: remove I2C_HID_READ_PENDING flag to prevent lock-up

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: i2c-hid: remove I2C_HID_READ_PENDING flag to prevent lock-up The flag I2C_HID_READ_PENDING is used to serialize I2C operations. However, this is not necessary, because I2C core already has its own locking for that. More importantly, this flag can cause a lock-up: if the flag is set in i2c_hid_xfer() and an interrupt happens, the interrupt handler (i2c_hid_irq) will check this flag and return immediately without doing anything, then the interrupt handler will be invoked again in an infinite loop. Since interrupt handler is an RT task, it takes over the CPU and the flag-clearing task never gets scheduled, thus we have a lock-up. Delete this unnecessary flag.

net/mlx5e: Prevent deadlock while disabling aRFS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5e: Prevent deadlock while disabling aRFS When disabling aRFS under the `priv->state_lock`, any scheduled aRFS works are canceled using the `cancel_work_sync` function, which waits for the work to end if it has already started. However, while waiting for the work handler, the handler will try to acquire the `state_lock` which is already acquired. The worker acquires the lock to delete the rules if the state is down, which is not the worker's responsibility since disabling aRFS deletes the rules. Add an aRFS state variable, which indicates whether the aRFS is enabled and prevent adding rules when the aRFS is disabled. As reported by users and syzbot, a deadlock is possible in the following scenario: CPU 0: - RTNL is held - e1000_close - e1000_down - cancel_work_sync (cancel / wait for e1000_reset_task()) CPU 1: - process_one_work - e1000_reset_task - take RTNL To remedy this, avoid calling cancel_work_sync from e1000_down (e1000_reset_task does nothing if the device is down anyway). Instead, call cancel_work_sync for e1000_reset_task when the device is being removed.

net: dsa: remove redundant netdev_lock_ops() from conduit ethtool ops

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: dsa: remove redundant netdev_lock_ops() from conduit ethtool ops DSA replaces the conduit (master) device's ethtool_ops with its own wrappers that aggregate stats from both the conduit and DSA switch ports. Taking the lock again inside the DSA wrappers causes a deadlock. Stumbled upon this when booting qemu with fbnic and CONFIG_NET_DSA_LOOP=y (which looks like some kind of testing device that auto-populates the ports of eth0). `ethtool -i` is enough to deadlock. This means we have basically zero coverage for DSA stuff with real ops locked devs. Remove the redundant netdev_lock_ops()/netdev_unlock_ops() calls from the DSA conduit ethtool wrappers.

md: fix array_state=clear sysfs deadlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: md: fix array_state=clear sysfs deadlock When "clear" is written to array_state, md_attr_store() breaks sysfs active protection so the array can delete itself from its own sysfs store method. However, md_attr_store() currently drops the mddev reference before calling sysfs_unbreak_active_protection(). Once do_md_stop(..., 0) has made the mddev eligible for delayed deletion, the temporary kobject reference taken by sysfs_break_active_protection() can become the last kobject reference protecting the md kobject. That allows sysfs_unbreak_active_protection() to drop the last kobject reference from the current sysfs writer context. kobject teardown then recurses into kernfs removal while the current sysfs node is still being unwound, and lockdep reports recursive locking on kn->active with kernfs_drain() in the call chain. Reproducer on an existing level: 1. Create an md0 linear array and activate it: mknod /dev/md0 b 9 0 echo none > /sys/block/md0/md/metadata_version echo linear > /sys/block/md0/md/level echo 1 > /sys/block/md0/md/raid_disks echo "$(cat /sys/class/block/sdb/dev)" > /sys/block/md0/md/new_dev echo "$(($(cat /sys/class/block/sdb/size) / 2))" > \ /sys/block/md0/md/dev-sdb/size echo 0 > /sys/block/md0/md/dev-sdb/slot echo active > /sys/block/md0/md/array_state 2. Wait briefly for the array to settle, then clear it: sleep 2 echo clear > /sys/block/md0/md/array_state The warning looks like: WARNING: possible recursive locking detected bash/588 is trying to acquire lock: (kn->active#65) at __kernfs_remove+0x157/0x1d0 but task is already holding lock: (kn->active#65) at sysfs_unbreak_active_protection+0x1f/0x40 ... drm/amdgpu: fix AMDGPU_INFO_READ_MMR_REG

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu: fix AMDGPU_INFO_READ_MMR_REG There were multiple issues in that code. First of all the order between the reset semaphore and the mm_lock was wrong (e.g. copy_to_user) was called while holding the lock. Then we allocated memory while holding the reset semaphore which is also a pretty big bug and can deadlock. Then we used down_read_trylock() instead of waiting for the reset to finish. net: phy: don't try to setup PHY-driven SFP cages when using genphy

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: phy: don't try to setup PHY-driven SFP cages when using genphy We don't have support for PHY-driver SFP cages with the genphy code. On top of that, it was found by sashiko that running sfp_bus_add_upstream() for genphy deadlocks, as for genphy the PHY probing runs under RTNL, which isn't the case for non-genphy drivers. This problem was reproduced, and does lead to a deadlock on RTNL. Before the blamed commit, the phy_sfp_probe() call was made by individual PHY drivers, so there was no way to get to the SFP probing path when using genphy. Let's therefore only run phy_sfp_probe when not using genphy.

mm/swapfile: add cond_resched() in get_swap_pages()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/swapfile: add cond_resched() in get_swap_pages() The softlockup still occurs in get_swap_pages() under memory pressure. 64 CPU cores, 64GB memory, and 28 zram devices, the disksize of each zram device is 50MB with same priority as si. Use the stress-ng tool to increase memory pressure, causing the system to oom frequently. The plist_for_each_entry_safe() loops in get_swap_pages() could reach tens of thousands of times to find available space (extreme case: cond_resched() is not called in scan_swap_map_slots()). Let's add cond_resched() into get_swap_pages() when failed to find available space to avoid softlockup.

PCI: pciehp: Avoid unnecessary device replacement check

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI: pciehp: Avoid unnecessary device replacement check Hot-removal of nested PCI hotplug ports suffers from a long-standing race condition which can lead to a deadlock: A parent hotplug port acquires pci_lock_rescan_remove(), then waits for pciehp to unbind from a child hotplug port. Meanwhile that child hotplug port tries to acquire pci_lock_rescan_remove() as well in order to remove its own children. The deadlock only occurs if the parent acquires pci_lock_rescan_remove() first, not if the child happens to acquire it first. Several workarounds to avoid the issue have been proposed and discarded over the years, e.g.: https://lore.kernel.org/r/4c882e25194ba8282b78fe963fec8faae7cf23eb.1529173804.git.lukas@wunner.de/ A proper fix is being worked on, but needs more time as it is nontrivial and necessarily intrusive. Recent commit 9d573d19547b ("PCI: pciehp: Detect device replacement during system sleep") provokes more frequent occurrence of the deadlock when removing more than one Thunderbolt device during system sleep. The commit sought to detect device replacement, but also triggered on device removal. Differentiating reliably between replacement and removal is impossible because pci_get_dsn() returns 0 both if the device was removed, as well as if it was replaced with one lacking a Device Serial Number. Avoid the more frequent occurrence of the deadlock by checking whether the hotplug port itself was hot-removed. If so, there's no sense in checking whether its child device was replaced. This works because the ->resume_noirq() callback is invoked in top-down order for the entire hierarchy: A parent hotplug port detecting device replacement (or removal) marks all children as removed using pci_dev_set_disconnected() and a child hotplug port can then reliably detect being removed.

net: systemport: Add global locking for descriptor lifecycle

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: systemport: Add global locking for descriptor lifecycle The descriptor list is a shared resource across all of the transmit queues, and the locking mechanism used today only protects concurrency across a given transmit queue between the transmit and reclaiming. This creates an opportunity for the SYSTEMPORT hardware to work on corrupted descriptors if we have multiple producers at once which is the case when using multiple transmit queues. This was particularly noticeable when using multiple flows/transmit queues and it showed up in interesting ways in that UDP packets would get a correct UDP header checksum being calculated over an incorrect packet length. Similarly TCP packets would get an equally correct checksum computed by the hardware over an incorrect packet length. The SYSTEMPORT hardware maintains an internal descriptor list that it re-arranges when the driver produces a new descriptor anytime it writes to the WRITE_PORT_{HI,LO} registers, there is however some delay in the hardware to re-organize its descriptors and it is possible that concurrent TX queues eventually break this internal allocation scheme to the point where the length/status part of the descriptor gets used for an incorrect data buffer. The fix is to impose a global serialization for all TX queues in the short section where we are writing to the WRITE_PORT_{HI,LO} registers which solves the corruption even with multiple concurrent TX queues being used.

If such call hits mptcp_sockopt_sync_all() then subsequently __mptcp_sockopt_sync() could try to lock the subflow socket for itself, causing a deadlock. sysrq: Show Blocked State task:ss-server state:D stack: 0 pid: 938 ppid: 1 flags:0x00000000 Call Trace: <TASK> __schedule+0x2d6/0x10c0 ? __mod_memcg_state+0x4d/0x70 ? csum_partial+0xd/0x20 ? _raw_spin_lock_irqsave+0x26/0x50 schedule+0x4e/0xc0 __lock_sock+0x69/0x90 ? do_wait_intr_irq+0xa0/0xa0 __lock_sock_fast+0x35/0x50 mptcp_sockopt_sync_all+0x38/0xc0 __mptcp_push_pending+0x105/0x200 mptcp_sendmsg+0x466/0x490 sock_sendmsg+0x57/0x60 __sys_sendto+0xf0/0x160 ? do_wait_intr_irq+0xa0/0xa0 ? fpregs_restore_userregs+0x12/0xd0 __x64_sys_sendto+0x20/0x30 do_syscall_64+0x38/0x90 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xae RIP: 0033:0x7f9ba546c2d0 RSP: 002b:00007ffdc3b762d8 EFLAGS: 00000246 ORIG_RAX: 000000000000002c RAX: ffffffffffffffda RBX: 00007f9ba56c8060 RCX: 00007f9ba546c2d0 RDX: 000000000000077a RSI: 0000000000e5e180 RDI: 0000000000000234 RBP: 0000000000cc57f0 R08: 0000000000000000 R09: 0000000000000000 R10: 0000000000000000 R11: 0000000000000246 R12: 00007f9ba56c8060 R13: 0000000000b6ba60 R14: 0000000000cc7840 R15: 41d8685b1d7901b8 </TASK> Fix the issue by using __mptcp_flush_join_list() instead of plain mptcp_flush_join_list() inside __mptcp_push_pending(), as suggested by Florian. Revert "smb: client: fix TCP timers deadlock after rmmod"

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Revert "smb: client: fix TCP timers deadlock after rmmod" This reverts commit e9f2517a3e18a54a3943c098d2226b245d488801. Commit e9f2517a3e18 ("smb: client: fix TCP timers deadlock after rmmod") is intended to fix a null-ptr-deref in LOCKDEP, which is mentioned as CVE-2024-54680, but is actually did not fix anything; The issue can be reproduced on top of it. [0] Also, it reverted the change by commit ef7134c7fc48 ("smb: client: Fix use-after-free of network namespace.") and introduced a real issue by reviving the kernel TCP socket. When a reconnect happens for a CIFS connection, the socket state transitions to FIN_WAIT_1. Then, inet_csk_clear_xmit_timers_sync() in tcp_close() stops all timers for the socket. If an incoming FIN packet is lost, the socket will stay at FIN_WAIT_1 forever, and such sockets could be leaked up to net.ipv4.tcp_max_orphans. Usually, FIN can be retransmitted by the peer, but if the peer aborts the connection, the issue comes into reality. I warned about this privately by pointing out the exact report [1], but the bogus fix was finally merged. So, we should not stop the timers to finally kill the connection on our side in that case, meaning we must not use a kernel socket for TCP whose sk->sk_net_refcnt is 0. The kernel socket does not have a reference to its netns to make it possible to tear down netns without cleaning up every resource in it. For example, tunnel devices use a UDP socket internally, but we can destroy netns without removing such devices and let it complete during exit. Otherwise, netns would be leaked when the last application died. However, this is problematic for TCP sockets because TCP has timers to close the connection gracefully even after the socket is close()d. The lifetime of the socket and its netns is different from the lifetime of the underlying connection. If the socket user does not maintain the netns lifetime, the timer could be fired after the socket is close()d and its netns is freed up, resulting in use-after-free. Actually, we have seen so many similar issues and converted such sockets to have a reference to netns. That's why I converted the CIFS client socket to have a reference to netns (sk->sk_net_refcnt == 1), which is somehow mentioned as out-of-scope of CIFS and technically wrong in e9f2517a3e18, but **is in-scope and right fix**. Regarding the LOCKDEP issue, we can prevent the module unload by bumping the module refcount when switching the LOCKDDEP key in sock_lock_init_class_and_name(). [2] For a while, let's revert the bogus fix. Note that now we can use sk_net_refcnt_upgrade() for the socket conversion, but I'll do so later separately to make backport easy.

HID: usbhid: fix deadlock in hid_post_reset()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: usbhid: fix deadlock in hid_post_reset() You can build a USB device that includes a HID component and a storage or UAS component. The components can be reset only together. That means that hid_pre_reset() and hid_post_reset() are in the block IO error handling. Hence no memory allocation used in them may do block IO because the IO can deadlock on the mutex held while resetting a device and calling the interface drivers. Use GFP_NOIO for all allocations in them.

Bluetooth: Fix possible deadlock in rfcomm_sk_state_change

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: Fix possible deadlock in rfcomm_sk_state_change syzbot reports a possible deadlock in rfcomm_sk_state_change [1]. While rfcomm_sock_connect acquires the sk lock and waits for the rfcomm lock, rfcomm_sock_release could have the rfcomm lock and hit a deadlock for acquiring the sk lock. Here's a simplified flow: rfcomm_sock_connect: lock_sock(sk) rfcomm_dlc_open: rfcomm_lock() rfcomm_sock_release: rfcomm_sock_shutdown: rfcomm_lock() __rfcomm_dlc_close: rfcomm_k_state_change: lock_sock(sk) This patch drops the sk lock before calling rfcomm_dlc_open to avoid the possible deadlock and holds sk's reference count to prevent use-after-free after rfcomm_dlc_open completes.

ptdma: pt_core_execute_cmd() should use spinlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ptdma: pt_core_execute_cmd() should use spinlock The interrupt handler (pt_core_irq_handler()) of the ptdma driver can be called from interrupt context. The code flow in this function can lead down to pt_core_execute_cmd() which will attempt to grab a mutex, which is not appropriate in interrupt context and ultimately leads to a kernel panic. The fix here changes this mutex to a spinlock, which has been verified to resolve the issue.

dm: dm-crypt: Do not partially accept write BIOs with zoned targets

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm: dm-crypt: Do not partially accept write BIOs with zoned targets Read and write operations issued to a dm-crypt target may be split according to the dm-crypt internal limits defined by the max_read_size and max_write_size module parameters (default is 128 KB). The intent is to improve processing time of large BIOs by splitting them into smaller operations that can be parallelized on different CPUs. For zoned dm-crypt targets, this BIO splitting is still done but without the parallel execution to ensure that the issuing order of write operations to the underlying devices remains sequential. However, the splitting itself causes other problems: 1) Since dm-crypt relies on the block layer zone write plugging to handle zone append emulation using regular write operations, the reminder of a split write BIO will always be plugged into the target zone write plugged. Once the on-going write BIO finishes, this reminder BIO is unplugged and issued from the zone write plug work. If this reminder BIO itself needs to be split, the reminder will be re-issued and plugged again, but that causes a call to a blk_queue_enter(), which may block if a queue freeze operation was initiated. This results in a deadlock as DM submission still holds BIOs that the queue freeze side is waiting for. 2) dm-crypt relies on the emulation done by the block layer using regular write operations for processing zone append operations. This still requires to properly return the written sector as the BIO sector of the original BIO. However, this can be done correctly only and only if there is a single clone BIO used for processing the original zone append operation issued by the user. If the size of a zone append operation is larger than dm-crypt max_write_size, then the orginal BIO will be split and processed as a chain of regular write operations. Such chaining result in an incorrect written sector being returned to the zone append issuer using the original BIO sector. This in turn results in file system data corruptions using xfs or btrfs. Fix this by modifying get_max_request_size() to always return the size of the BIO to avoid it being split with dm_accpet_partial_bio() in crypt_map(). get_max_request_size() is renamed to get_max_request_sectors() to clarify the unit of the value returned and its interface is changed to take a struct dm_target pointer and a pointer to the struct bio being processed. In addition to this change, to ensure that crypt_alloc_buffer() works correctly, set the dm-crypt device max_hw_sectors limit to be at most BIO_MAX_VECS << PAGE_SECTORS_SHIFT (1 MB with a 4KB page architecture). This forces DM core to split write BIOs before passing them to crypt_map(), and thus guaranteeing that dm-crypt can always accept an entire write BIO without needing to split it. This change does not have any effect on the read path of dm-crypt. Read operations can still be split and the BIO fragments processed in parallel. There is also no impact on the performance of the write path given that all zone write BIOs were already processed inline instead of in parallel. This change also does not affect in any way regular dm-crypt block devices.

drm: Don't unref the same fb many times by mistake due to deadlock handling

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm: Don't unref the same fb many times by mistake due to deadlock handling If we get a deadlock after the fb lookup in drm_mode_page_flip_ioctl() we proceed to unref the fb and then retry the whole thing from the top. But we forget to reset the fb pointer back to NULL, and so if we then get another error during the retry, before the fb lookup, we proceed the unref the same fb again without having gotten another reference. The end result is that the fb will (eventually) end up being freed while it's still in use. Reset fb to NULL once we've unreffed it to avoid doing it again until we've done another fb lookup. This turned out to be pretty easy to hit on a DG2 when doing async flips (and CONFIG_DEBUG_WW_MUTEX_SLOWPATH=y). The first symptom I saw that drm_closefb() simply got stuck in a busy loop while walking the framebuffer list. Fortunately I was able to convince it to oops instead, and from there it was easier to track down the culprit.

bus: mhi: host: Drop chan lock before queuing buffers

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bus: mhi: host: Drop chan lock before queuing buffers Ensure read and write locks for the channel are not taken in succession by dropping the read lock from parse_xfer_event() such that a callback given to client can potentially queue buffers and acquire the write lock in that process. Any queueing of buffers should be done without channel read lock acquired as it can result in multiple locks and a soft lockup. [mani: added fixes tag and cc'ed stable]

drm/amdkfd: Don't call mmput from MMU notifier callback

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdkfd: Don't call mmput from MMU notifier callback If the process is exiting, the mmput inside mmu notifier callback from compactd or fork or numa balancing could release the last reference of mm struct to call exit_mmap and free_pgtable, this triggers deadlock with below backtrace. The deadlock will leak kfd process as mmu notifier release is not called and cause VRAM leaking. The fix is to take mm reference mmget_non_zero when adding prange to the deferred list to pair with mmput in deferred list work. If prange split and add into pchild list, the pchild work_item.mm is not used, so remove the mm parameter from svm_range_unmap_split and svm_range_add_child. can: j1939: prevent deadlock by changing j1939_socks_lock to rwlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: j1939: prevent deadlock by changing j1939_socks_lock to rwlock The following 3 locks would race against each other, causing the deadlock situation in the Syzbot bug report: - j1939_socks_lock - active_session_list_lock - sk_session_queue_lock A reasonable fix is to change j1939_socks_lock to an rwlock, since in the rare situations where a write lock is required for the linked list that j1939_socks_lock is protecting, the code does not attempt to acquire any more locks. This would break the circular lock dependency, where, for example, the current thread already locks j1939_socks_lock and attempts to acquire sk_session_queue_lock, and at the same time, another thread attempts to acquire j1939_socks_lock while holding sk_session_queue_lock. NOTE: This patch along does not fix the unregister_netdevice bug reported by Syzbot; instead, it solves a deadlock situation to prepare for one or more further patches to actually fix the Syzbot bug, which appears to be a reference counting problem within the j1939 codebase. wifi: rt2x00: restart beacon queue when hardware reset

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: rt2x00: restart beacon queue when hardware reset When a hardware reset is triggered, all registers are reset, so all queues are forced to stop in hardware interface. However, mac80211 will not automatically stop the queue. If we don't manually stop the beacon queue, the queue will be deadlocked and unable to start again. This patch fixes the issue where Apple devices cannot connect to the AP after calling ieee80211_restart_hw().

powerpc/set_memory: Avoid spinlock recursion in change_page_attr()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: powerpc/set_memory: Avoid spinlock recursion in change_page_attr() Commit 1f9ad21c3b38 ("powerpc/mm: Implement set_memory() routines") included a spin_lock() to change_page_attr() in order to safely perform the three step operations. To do the operation atomically, we can't use pte modification helpers anymore. Because all platforms have different combination of bits, it is not easy to use those bits directly. But all have the _PAGE_KERNEL_{RO/ROX/RW/RWX} set of flags. All we need it to compare two sets to know which bits are set or cleared. For instance, by comparing _PAGE_KERNEL_ROX and _PAGE_KERNEL_RO you know which bit gets cleared and which bit get set when changing exec permission.

xfrm: iptfs: fix ABBA deadlock in iptfs_destroy_state()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfrm: iptfs: fix ABBA deadlock in iptfs_destroy_state() iptfs_destroy_state() calls hrtimer_cancel() while holding a spinlock that the timer callback also acquires, leading to an ABBA deadlock on SMP systems. For the output timer (iptfs_timer): - iptfs_destroy_state() holds x->lock, calls hrtimer_cancel() - iptfs_delay_timer() callback takes x->lock For the drop timer (drop_timer): - iptfs_destroy_state() holds drop_lock, calls hrtimer_cancel() - iptfs_drop_timer() callback takes drop_lock Both timers use HRTIMER_MODE_REL_SOFT, so their callbacks run in softirq context. When hrtimer_cancel() is called for a soft timer that is currently executing on another CPU, hrtimer_cancel_wait_running() spins on softirq_expiry_lock -- the same lock held by the softirq running the callback. If the callback is blocked waiting for the spinlock held by the caller of hrtimer_cancel(), a circular dependency forms: CPU 0: holds lock_A -> waits for softirq_expiry_lock CPU 1: holds softirq_expiry_lock -> waits for lock_A Fix by calling hrtimer_cancel() before acquiring the respective locks. hrtimer_cancel() is safe to call without holding any lock and will wait for any in-progress callback to complete. For the output timer, the lock is still acquired afterwards to drain the packet queue. For the drop timer, the lock/unlock pair is removed entirely since it only existed to serialize with the timer callback, which hrtimer_cancel() already guarantees. Found by source code audit.
