crypto: af_alg - Set merge to zero early in af_alg_sendmsg

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: af_alg - Set merge to zero early in af_alg_sendmsg If an error causes af_alg_sendmsg to abort, ctx->merge may contain a garbage value from the previous loop. This may then trigger a crash on the next entry into af_alg_sendmsg when it attempts to do a merge that can't be done. Fix this by setting ctx->merge to zero near the start of the loop.

Fix this by setting ctx->merge to zero near the start of the loop.

rtc: check if __rtc_read_time was successful in rtc_timer_do_work()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rtc: check if __rtc_read_time was successful in rtc_timer_do_work() If the __rtc_read_time call fails,, the struct rtc_time tm; may contain uninitialized data, or an illegal date/time read from the RTC hardware. When calling rtc_tm_to_ktime later, the result may be a very large value (possibly KTIME_MAX). If there are periodic timers in rtc->timerqueue, they will continually expire, may causing kernel softlockup.

btrfs: reinitialize delayed ref list after deleting it from the list

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: reinitialize delayed ref list after deleting it from the list At insert_delayed_ref() if we need to update the action of an existing ref to BTRFS_DROP_DELAYED_REF, we delete the ref from its ref head's ref_add_list using list_del(), which leaves the ref's add_list member not reinitialized, as list_del() sets the next and prev members of the list to LIST_POISON1 and LIST_POISON2, respectively. If later we end up calling drop_delayed_ref() against the ref, which can happen during merging or when destroying delayed refs due to a transaction abort, we can trigger a crash since at drop_delayed_ref() we call list_empty() against the ref's add_list, which returns false since the list was not reinitialized after the list_del() and as a consequence we call list_del() again at drop_delayed_ref(). This results in an invalid list access since the next and prev members are set to poison pointers, resulting in a splat if CONFIG_LIST_HARDENED and CONFIG_DEBUG_LIST are set or invalid poison pointer dereferences otherwise. So fix this by deleting from the list with list_del_init() instead.

wifi: ath11k: fix deinitialization of firmware resources

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath11k: fix deinitialization of firmware resources Currently, in ath11k_ahb_fw_resources_init(), iommu domain mapping is done only for the chipsets having fixed firmware memory. Also, for such chipsets, mapping is done only if it does not have TrustZone support. During deinitialization, only if TrustZone support is not there, iommu is unmapped back. However, for non fixed firmware memory chipsets, TrustZone support is not there and this makes the condition check to true and it tries to unmap the memory which was not mapped during initialization. This leads to the following trace - [ 83.198790] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000008 [ 83.259537] Modules linked in: ath11k_ahb ath11k qmi_helpers .. snip .. nsh: Restore skb->{protocol,data,mac_header} for outer header in nsh_gso_segment().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nsh: Restore skb->{protocol,data,mac_header} for outer header in nsh_gso_segment(). syzbot triggered various splats (see [0] and links) by a crafted GSO packet of VIRTIO_NET_HDR_GSO_UDP layering the following protocols: ETH_P_8021AD + ETH_P_NSH + ETH_P_IPV6 + IPPROTO_UDP NSH can encapsulate IPv4, IPv6, Ethernet, NSH, and MPLS. As the inner protocol can be Ethernet, NSH GSO handler, nsh_gso_segment(), calls skb_mac_gso_segment() to invoke inner protocol GSO handlers. nsh_gso_segment() does the following for the original skb before calling skb_mac_gso_segment() 1. reset skb->network_header 2. save the original skb->{mac_heaeder,mac_len} in a local variable 3. pull the NSH header 4. resets skb->mac_header 5. set up skb->mac_len and skb->protocol for the inner protocol. and does the following for the segmented skb 6. set ntohs(ETH_P_NSH) to skb->protocol 7. push the NSH header 8. restore skb->mac_header 9. set skb->mac_header + mac_len to skb->network_header 10. restore skb->mac_len There are two problems in 6-7 and 8-9. (a) After 6 & 7, skb->data points to the NSH header, so the outer header (ETH_P_8021AD in this case) is stripped when skb is sent out of netdev. Also, if NSH is encapsulated by NSH + Ethernet (so NSH-Ethernet-NSH), skb_pull() in the first nsh_gso_segment() will make skb->data point to the middle of the outer NSH or Ethernet header because the Ethernet header is not pulled by the second nsh_gso_segment(). (b) While restoring skb->{mac_header,network_header} in 8 & 9, nsh_gso_segment() does not assume that the data in the linear buffer is shifted. However, udp6_ufo_fragment() could shift the data and change skb->mac_header accordingly as demonstrated by syzbot. If this happens, even the restored skb->mac_header points to the middle of the outer header. It seems nsh_gso_segment() has never worked with outer headers so far. At the end of nsh_gso_segment(), the outer header must be restored for the segmented skb, instead of the NSH header. To do that, let's calculate the outer header position relatively from the inner header and set skb->{data,mac_header,protocol} properly. i40e: fix vf may be used uninitialized in this function warning

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: fix vf may be used uninitialized in this function warning To fix the regression introduced by commit 52424f974bc5, which causes servers hang in very hard to reproduce conditions with resets races. Using two sources for the information is the root cause. In this function before the fix bumping v didn't mean bumping vf pointer. But the code used this variables interchangeably, so stale vf could point to different/not intended vf. Remove redundant "v" variable and iterate via single VF pointer across whole function instead to guarantee VF pointer validity.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rseq: Fix using an uninitialized stack variable in rseq_exit_user_update() There is an bug in which an uninitialized stack variable is used in rseq_exit_user_update() as reported by syzbot: BUG: KMSAN: kernel-infoleak in rseq_set_ids_get_csaddr include/linux/rseq_entry.h:502 [inline] The local variable: struct rseq_ids ids = { .cpu_id = task_cpu(t), .mm_cid = task_mm_cid(t), .node_id = cpu_to_node(ids.cpu_id), }; According to the C standard, the evaluation order of expressions in an initializer list is indeterminately sequenced. The compiler (Clang, in this KMSAN build) evaluates `cpu_to_node(ids.cpu_id)` *before* `ids.cpu_id` is initialized with `task_cpu(t)`. This is fixed by moving the assignment of ids.node_id outside the structure initialization.

fuse: limit FUSE_NOTIFY_RETRIEVE to uptodate folios

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fuse: limit FUSE_NOTIFY_RETRIEVE to uptodate folios FUSE_NOTIFY_RETRIEVE must be limited to uptodate folios; !uptodate folios can contain uninitialized data. Since FUSE_NOTIFY_RETRIEVE is intended to only return data that is already in the page cache and not wait for data from the FUSE daemon, treat !uptodate folios as if they weren't present. This only has security impact on systems that don't enable automatic zero-initialization of all page allocations via CONFIG_INIT_ON_ALLOC_DEFAULT_ON or init_on_alloc=1.

crypto: af_alg - zero initialize memory allocated via sock_kmalloc

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: af_alg - zero initialize memory allocated via sock_kmalloc Several crypto user API contexts and requests allocated with sock_kmalloc() were left uninitialized, relying on callers to set fields explicitly. This resulted in the use of uninitialized data in certain error paths or when new fields are added in the future. The ACVP patches also contain two user-space interface files: algif_kpp.c and algif_akcipher.c. These too rely on proper initialization of their context structures. A particular issue has been observed with the newly added 'inflight' variable introduced in af_alg_ctx by commit: 67b164a871af ("crypto: af_alg - Disallow multiple in-flight AIO requests") Because the context is not memset to zero after allocation, the inflight variable has contained garbage values. As a result, af_alg_alloc_areq() has incorrectly returned -EBUSY randomly when the garbage value was interpreted as true: https://github.com/gregkh/linux/blame/master/crypto/af_alg.c#L1209 The check directly tests ctx->inflight without explicitly comparing against true/false. Since inflight is only ever set to true or false later, an uninitialized value has triggered -EBUSY failures. Zero-initializing memory allocated with sock_kmalloc() ensures inflight and other fields start in a known state, removing random issues caused by uninitialized data.

um: init cpu_tasks[] earlier

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: um: init cpu_tasks[] earlier This is currently done in uml_finishsetup(), but e.g. with KCOV enabled we'll crash because some init code can call into e.g. memparse(), which has coverage annotations, and then the checks in check_kcov_mode() crash because current is NULL. Simply initialize the cpu_tasks[] array statically, which fixes the crash. For the later SMP work, it seems to have not really caused any problems yet, but initialize all of the entries anyway.

fs/ntfs3: Initialize new folios before use

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Initialize new folios before use KMSAN reports an uninitialized value in longest_match_std(), invoked from ntfs_compress_write(). When new folios are allocated without being marked uptodate and ni_read_frame() is skipped because the caller expects the frame to be completely overwritten, some reserved folios may remain only partially filled, leaving the rest memory uninitialized.

fs/ntfs3: prevent uninitialized lcn caused by zero len

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: prevent uninitialized lcn caused by zero len syzbot reported a uninit-value in ntfs_iomap_begin [1]. Since runs was not touched yet, run_lookup_entry() immediately fails and returns false, which makes the value of "*len" 0. Simultaneously, the new value and err value are also 0, causing the logic in attr_data_get_block_locked() to jump directly to ok, ultimately resulting in *lcn being triggered before it is set [1]. In ntfs_iomap_begin(), the check for a 0 value in clen is moved forward to before updating lcn to avoid this [1]. net: hamradio: 6pack: fix uninit-value in sixpack_receive_buf

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: hamradio: 6pack: fix uninit-value in sixpack_receive_buf sixpack_receive_buf() does not properly skip bytes with TTY error flags. The while loop iterates through the flags buffer but never advances the data pointer (cp), and passes the original count (including error bytes) to sixpack_decode(). This causes sixpack_decode() to process bytes that should have been skipped due to TTY errors. The TTY layer does not guarantee that cp[i] holds a meaningful value when fp[i] is set, so passing those positions to sixpack_decode() results in KMSAN reporting an uninit-value read. Fix this by processing bytes one at a time, advancing cp on each iteration, and only passing valid (non-error) bytes to sixpack_decode(). This matches the pattern used by slip_receive_buf() and mkiss_receive_buf() for the same purpose.

cpumap: Zero-initialise xdp_rxq_info struct before running XDP program

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cpumap: Zero-initialise xdp_rxq_info struct before running XDP program When running an XDP program that is attached to a cpumap entry, we don't initialise the xdp_rxq_info data structure being used in the xdp_buff that backs the XDP program invocation. Tobias noticed that this leads to random values being returned as the xdp_md->rx_queue_index value for XDP programs running in a cpumap. This means we're basically returning the contents of the uninitialised memory, which is bad. Fix this by zero-initialising the rxq data structure before running the XDP program.

media: mxl111sf: change mutex_init() location

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: mxl111sf: change mutex_init() location Syzbot reported, that mxl111sf_ctrl_msg() uses uninitialized mutex. The problem was in wrong mutex_init() location. Previous mutex_init(&state->msg_lock) call was in ->init() function, but dvb_usbv2_init() has this order of calls: dvb_usbv2_init() dvb_usbv2_adapter_init() dvb_usbv2_adapter_frontend_init() props->frontend_attach() props->init() Since mxl111sf_* devices call mxl111sf_ctrl_msg() in ->frontend_attach() internally we need to initialize state->msg_lock before frontend_attach(). To achieve it, ->probe() call added to all mxl111sf_* devices, which will simply initiaize mutex.

netlink: Fix kernel-infoleak-after-free in __skb_datagram_iter

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netlink: Fix kernel-infoleak-after-free in __skb_datagram_iter syzbot reported the following uninit-value access issue [1]: netlink_to_full_skb() creates a new `skb` and puts the `skb->data` passed as a 1st arg of netlink_to_full_skb() onto new `skb`. The data size is specified as `len` and passed to skb_put_data(). This `len` is based on `skb->end` that is not data offset but buffer offset. The `skb->end` contains data and tailroom. Since the tailroom is not initialized when the new `skb` created, KMSAN detects uninitialized memory area when copying the data. This patch resolved this issue by correct the len from `skb->end` to `skb->len`, which is the actual data offset. fork: defer linking file vma until vma is fully initialized

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fork: defer linking file vma until vma is fully initialized Thorvald reported a WARNING [1]. And the root cause is below race: CPU 1 CPU 2 fork hugetlbfs_fallocate dup_mmap hugetlbfs_punch_hole i_mmap_lock_write(mapping); vma_interval_tree_insert_after -- Child vma is visible through i_mmap tree. i_mmap_unlock_write(mapping); hugetlb_dup_vma_private -- Clear vma_lock outside i_mmap_rwsem! i_mmap_lock_write(mapping); hugetlb_vmdelete_list vma_interval_tree_foreach hugetlb_vma_trylock_write -- Vma_lock is cleared. tmp->vm_ops->open -- Alloc new vma_lock outside i_mmap_rwsem! hugetlb_vma_unlock_write -- Vma_lock is assigned!!! i_mmap_unlock_write(mapping); hugetlb_dup_vma_private() and hugetlb_vm_op_open() are called outside i_mmap_rwsem lock while vma lock can be used in the same time. Fix this by deferring linking file vma until vma is fully initialized. Those vmas should be initialized first before they can be used.

fat: fix uninitialized field in nostale filehandles

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fat: fix uninitialized field in nostale filehandles When fat_encode_fh_nostale() encodes file handle without a parent it stores only first 10 bytes of the file handle. However the length of the file handle must be a multiple of 4 so the file handle is actually 12 bytes long and the last two bytes remain uninitialized. This is not great at we potentially leak uninitialized information with the handle to userspace. Properly initialize the full handle length.

BTRFS: error (device vdc: state EA) in cleanup_transaction:2055: errno=-2 No such entry This happens because create_pending_snapshot() initializes the new root item as a copy of the source root item. This includes the refs field, which is 0 for a deleted subvolume. The call to btrfs_insert_root() therefore inserts a root with refs == 0. btrfs_get_new_fs_root() then finds the root and returns -ENOENT if refs == 0, which causes create_pending_snapshot() to abort. Fix it by checking the source root's refs before attempting the snapshot, but after locking subvol_sem to avoid racing with deletion.

bnge: return after auxiliary_device_uninit() in error path

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bnge: return after auxiliary_device_uninit() in error path When auxiliary_device_add() fails, the error block calls auxiliary_device_uninit() but does not return. The uninit drops the last reference and synchronously runs bnge_aux_dev_release(), which sets bd->auxr_dev = NULL and frees the underlying object. The subsequent bd->auxr_dev->net = bd->netdev then dereferences NULL, which is not a good thing to have happen when trying to clean up from an error. Add the missing return, as the auxiliary bus documentation states is a requirement (seems that LLM tools read documentation better than humans do...)

usb: usblp: fix uninitialized heap leak via LPGETSTATUS ioctl

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: usblp: fix uninitialized heap leak via LPGETSTATUS ioctl Just like in a previous problem in this driver, usblp_ctrl_msg() will collapse the usb_control_msg() return value to 0/-errno, discarding the actual number of bytes transferred. Ideally that short command should be detected and error out, but many printers are known to send "incorrect" responses back so we can't just do that. statusbuf is kmalloc(8) at probe time and never filled before the first LPGETSTATUS ioctl. usblp_read_status() requests 1 byte. If a malicious printer responds with zero bytes, *statusbuf is one byte of stale kmalloc heap, sign-extended into the local int status, which the LPGETSTATUS path then copy_to_user()s directly to the ioctl caller. Fix this all by just zapping out the memory buffer when allocated at probe time. If a later call does a short read, the data will be identical to what the device sent it the last time, so there is no "leak" of information happening.

iio: common: st_sensors: Fix use of uninitialize device structs

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: common: st_sensors: Fix use of uninitialize device structs Throughout the various probe functions &indio_dev->dev is used before it is initialized. This caused a kernel panic in st_sensors_power_enable() when the call to devm_regulator_bulk_get_enable() fails and then calls dev_err_probe() with the uninitialized device. This seems to only cause a panic with dev_err_probe(), dev_err(), dev_warn() and dev_info() don't seem to cause a panic, but are fixed as well. The issue is reported and traced here: [1]
