Ollama heap out-of-bounds read in GGUF tensor parsing leaks server process memory to unauthenticated remote attackers

Ollama before 0.17.1 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the GGUF model loader. The /api/create endpoint accepts an attacker-supplied GGUF file in which the declared tensor offset and size exceed the file's actual length; during quantization in fs/ggml/gguf.go and server/quantization.go (WriteTo()), the server reads past the allocated heap buffer. The leaked memory contents may include environment variables, API keys, system prompts, and concurrent users' conversation data, and can be exfiltrated by uploading the resulting model artifact through the /api/push endpoint to an attacker-controlled registry. The /api/create and /api/push endpoints have no authentication in the upstream distribution. Default deployments bind to 127.0.0.1, but the documented OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0 configuration is widely used in practice (large public-internet exposure observed).

Solutions

Upgrade to ollama 0.17.1 or later. The fix in PR #14406 validates that declared tensor offset+size do not exceed the GGUF file size before reading, and adds a length check in the quantizer prior to the unsafe read.

DoS using malicious gguf model file in ollama/ollama

A vulnerability in Ollama versions <=0.3.14 allows a malicious user to create a customized gguf model file that can be uploaded to the public Ollama server. When the server processes this malicious model, it crashes, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. The root cause of the issue is an out-of-bounds read in the gguf.go file.

An issue was discovered in Ollama before 0.1.46. An attacker can use two HTTP requests to upload a malformed GGUF file containing just 4 bytes starting with the GGUF custom magic header. By leveraging a custom Modelfile that includes a FROM statement pointing to the attacker-controlled blob file, the attacker can crash the application through the CreateModel route, leading to a segmentation fault (signal SIGSEGV: segmentation violation).

PJSIP: Heap OOB read in VPX unpacketizer

PJSIP is a free and open source multimedia communication library written in C. Prior to version 2.17, a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability exists in PJSIP's VP9 RTP unpacketizer that occurs when parsing crafted VP9 Scalability Structure (SS) data. Insufficient bounds checking on the payload descriptor length may cause reads beyond the allocated RTP payload buffer. This issue has been patched in version 2.17. A workaround for this issue involves disabling VP9 codec if not needed.

In HDRI builds, `Quantum` is a floating-point type, so pixel index values can be negative. Affected versions are subject to an Out-Of-Bounds Read in the `general_YUV444ToRGB_8u_P3AC4R_BGRX` function. This issue is likely down to insufficient data for the `pSrc` variable and results in crashes. This issue has been addressed in version 3.0.0-beta3. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this issue.
