An issue found in linux-kernel that leads to a race condition in rose_connect(). The rose driver uses rose_neigh->use to represent how many objects are using the rose_neigh. When a user wants to delete a rose_route via rose_ioctl(), the rose driver calls rose_del_node() and removes neighbours only if their “count” and “use” are zero.

This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges on affected installations of Linux Kernel 5.11.15. An attacker must first obtain the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the handling of eBPF programs. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied eBPF programs prior to executing them. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code in the context of the kernel. Was ZDI-CAN-13661.

i3c: master: cdns: Fix use after free vulnerability in cdns_i3c_master Driver Due to Race Condition

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i3c: master: cdns: Fix use after free vulnerability in cdns_i3c_master Driver Due to Race Condition In the cdns_i3c_master_probe function, &master->hj_work is bound with cdns_i3c_master_hj. And cdns_i3c_master_interrupt can call cnds_i3c_master_demux_ibis function to start the work. If we remove the module which will call cdns_i3c_master_remove to make cleanup, it will free master->base through i3c_master_unregister while the work mentioned above will be used. The sequence of operations that may lead to a UAF bug is as follows: CPU0 CPU1 | cdns_i3c_master_hj cdns_i3c_master_remove | i3c_master_unregister(&master->base) | device_unregister(&master->dev) | device_release | //free master->base | | i3c_master_do_daa(&master->base) | //use master->base Fix it by ensuring that the work is canceled before proceeding with the cleanup in cdns_i3c_master_remove.

nfsd: fix race between laundromat and free_stateid

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: fix race between laundromat and free_stateid There is a race between laundromat handling of revoked delegations and a client sending free_stateid operation. Laundromat thread finds that delegation has expired and needs to be revoked so it marks the delegation stid revoked and it puts it on a reaper list but then it unlock the state lock and the actual delegation revocation happens without the lock. Once the stid is marked revoked a racing free_stateid processing thread does the following (1) it calls list_del_init() which removes it from the reaper list and (2) frees the delegation stid structure. The laundromat thread ends up not calling the revoke_delegation() function for this particular delegation but that means it will no release the lock lease that exists on the file. Now, a new open for this file comes in and ends up finding that lease list isn't empty and calls nfsd_breaker_owns_lease() which ends up trying to derefence a freed delegation stateid. Leading to the followint use-after-free KASAN warning: kernel: ================================================================== kernel: BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in nfsd_breaker_owns_lease+0x140/0x160 [nfsd] kernel: Read of size 8 at addr ffff0000e73cd0c8 by task nfsd/6205 kernel: kernel: CPU: 2 UID: 0 PID: 6205 Comm: nfsd Kdump: loaded Not tainted 6.11.0-rc7+ #9 kernel: Hardware name: Apple Inc. First to make sure, that once the stid is marked revoked, it is not removed by the nfsd4_free_stateid(), the laundromat take a reference on the stateid. Then, coordinating whether the stid has been put on the cl_revoked list or we are processing FREE_STATEID and need to make sure to remove it from the list, each check that state and act accordingly. If laundromat has added to the cl_revoke list before the arrival of FREE_STATEID, then nfsd4_free_stateid() knows to remove it from the list. If nfsd4_free_stateid() finds that operations arrived before laundromat has placed it on cl_revoke list, it marks the state freed and then laundromat will no longer add it to the list. Also, for nfsd4_delegreturn() when looking for the specified stid, we need to access stid that are marked removed or freeable, it means the laundromat has started processing it but hasn't finished and this delegreturn needs to return nfserr_deleg_revoked and not nfserr_bad_stateid. The latter will not trigger a FREE_STATEID and the lack of it will leave this stid on the cl_revoked list indefinitely.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: do not delay dst_entries_add() in dst_release() dst_entries_add() uses per-cpu data that might be freed at netns dismantle from ip6_route_net_exit() calling dst_entries_destroy() Before ip6_route_net_exit() can be called, we release all the dsts associated with this netns, via calls to dst_release(), which waits an rcu grace period before calling dst_destroy() dst_entries_add() use in dst_destroy() is racy, because dst_entries_destroy() could have been called already. Decrementing the number of dsts must happen sooner. Notes: 1) in CONFIG_XFRM case, dst_destroy() can call dst_release_immediate(child), this might also cause UAF if the child does not have DST_NOCOUNT set. IPSEC maintainers might take a look and see how to address this. 2) There is also discussion about removing this count of dst, which might happen in future kernels.

arm64/sve: Discard stale CPU state when handling SVE traps

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: arm64/sve: Discard stale CPU state when handling SVE traps The logic for handling SVE traps manipulates saved FPSIMD/SVE state incorrectly, and a race with preemption can result in a task having TIF_SVE set and TIF_FOREIGN_FPSTATE clear even though the live CPU state is stale (e.g. with SVE traps enabled). This has been observed to result in warnings from do_sve_acc() where SVE traps are not expected while TIF_SVE is set: | if (test_and_set_thread_flag(TIF_SVE)) | WARN_ON(1); /* SVE access shouldn't have trapped */ Warnings of this form have been reported intermittently, e.g. https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/CA+G9fYtEGe_DhY2Ms7+L7NKsLYUomGsgqpdBj+QwDLeSg=JhGg@mail.gmail.com/ https://lore.kernel.org/linux-arm-kernel/000000000000511e9a060ce5a45c@google.com/ The race can occur when the SVE trap handler is preempted before and after manipulating the saved FPSIMD/SVE state, starting and ending on the same CPU, e.g. | void do_sve_acc(unsigned long esr, struct pt_regs *regs) | { | // Trap on CPU 0 with TIF_SVE clear, SVE traps enabled | // task->fpsimd_cpu is 0. | // per_cpu_ptr(&fpsimd_last_state, 0) is task. | | ... | | // Preempted; migrated from CPU 0 to CPU 1. | // TIF_FOREIGN_FPSTATE is set. | | get_cpu_fpsimd_context(); | | if (test_and_set_thread_flag(TIF_SVE)) | WARN_ON(1); /* SVE access shouldn't have trapped */ | | sve_init_regs() { | if (!test_thread_flag(TIF_FOREIGN_FPSTATE)) { | ... | } else { | fpsimd_to_sve(current); | current->thread.fp_type = FP_STATE_SVE; | } | } | | put_cpu_fpsimd_context(); | | // Preempted; migrated from CPU 1 to CPU 0. | // task->fpsimd_cpu is still 0 | // If per_cpu_ptr(&fpsimd_last_state, 0) is still task then: | // - Stale HW state is reused (with SVE traps enabled) | // - TIF_FOREIGN_FPSTATE is cleared | // - A return to userspace skips HW state restore | } Fix the case where the state is not live and TIF_FOREIGN_FPSTATE is set by calling fpsimd_flush_task_state() to detach from the saved CPU state. This ensures that a subsequent context switch will not reuse the stale CPU state, and will instead set TIF_FOREIGN_FPSTATE, forcing the new state to be reloaded from memory prior to a return to userspace.

tcp/dccp: Don't use timer_pending() in reqsk_queue_unlink().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tcp/dccp: Don't use timer_pending() in reqsk_queue_unlink(). Martin KaFai Lau reported use-after-free [0] in reqsk_timer_handler(). """ We are seeing a use-after-free from a bpf prog attached to trace_tcp_retransmit_synack. The program passes the req->sk to the bpf_sk_storage_get_tracing kernel helper which does check for null before using it. """ The commit 83fccfc3940c ("inet: fix potential deadlock in reqsk_queue_unlink()") added timer_pending() in reqsk_queue_unlink() not to call del_timer_sync() from reqsk_timer_handler(), but it introduced a small race window. Before the timer is called, expire_timers() calls detach_timer(timer, true) to clear timer->entry.pprev and marks it as not pending. If reqsk_queue_unlink() checks timer_pending() just after expire_timers() calls detach_timer(), TCP will miss del_timer_sync(); the reqsk timer will continue running and send multiple SYN+ACKs until it expires. The reported UAF could happen if req->sk is close()d earlier than the timer expiration, which is 63s by default. The scenario would be 1. inet_csk_complete_hashdance() calls inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop(), but del_timer_sync() is missed 2. reqsk timer is executed and scheduled again 3. req->sk is accept()ed and reqsk_put() decrements rsk_refcnt, but reqsk timer still has another one, and inet_csk_accept() does not clear req->sk for non-TFO sockets 4. sk is close()d 5. reqsk timer is executed again, and BPF touches req->sk Let's not use timer_pending() by passing the caller context to __inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop(). Note that reqsk timer is pinned, so the issue does not happen in most use cases. Keeping a reference to add_timer inside the lock, and calling sk_stop_timer_sync() with this reference, instead of "entry->add_timer". Move list_del(&entry->list) to mptcp_pm_del_add_timer and inside the pm lock, do not directly access any members of the entry outside the pm lock, which can avoid similar "entry->x" uaf.

ipv4: Fix uninit-value access in __ip_make_skb()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv4: Fix uninit-value access in __ip_make_skb() KMSAN reported uninit-value access in __ip_make_skb() [1]. __ip_make_skb() tests HDRINCL to know if the skb has icmphdr. However, HDRINCL can cause a race condition. If calling setsockopt(2) with IP_HDRINCL changes HDRINCL while __ip_make_skb() is running, the function will access icmphdr in the skb even if it is not included. This causes the issue reported by KMSAN. Check FLOWI_FLAG_KNOWN_NH on fl4->flowi4_flags instead of testing HDRINCL on the socket. Also, fl4->fl4_icmp_type and fl4->fl4_icmp_code are not initialized. These are union in struct flowi4 and are implicitly initialized by flowi4_init_output(), but we should not rely on specific union layout. Initialize these explicitly in raw_sendmsg(). In the Linux kernel before 4.9.3, fs/xfs/xfs_aops.c allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) because there is a race condition between direct and memory-mapped I/O (associated with a hole) that is handled with BUG_ON instead of an I/O failure.

platform/chrome: cros_ec_uart: properly fix race condition

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/chrome: cros_ec_uart: properly fix race condition The cros_ec_uart_probe() function calls devm_serdev_device_open() before it calls serdev_device_set_client_ops(). This can trigger a NULL pointer dereference: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000 ... Call Trace: <TASK> ... ? ttyport_receive_buf A simplified version of crashing code is as follows: static inline size_t serdev_controller_receive_buf(struct serdev_controller *ctrl, const u8 *data, size_t count) { struct serdev_device *serdev = ctrl->serdev; if (!serdev || !serdev->ops->receive_buf) // CRASH! return 0; return serdev->ops->receive_buf(serdev, data, count); } It assumes that if SERPORT_ACTIVE is set and serdev exists, serdev->ops will also exist. This conflicts with the existing cros_ec_uart_probe() logic, as it first calls devm_serdev_device_open() (which sets SERPORT_ACTIVE), and only later sets serdev->ops via serdev_device_set_client_ops(). Commit 01f95d42b8f4 ("platform/chrome: cros_ec_uart: fix race condition") attempted to fix a similar race condition, but while doing so, made the window of error for this race condition to happen much wider. Attempt to fix the race condition again, making sure we fully setup before calling devm_serdev_device_open().

usb: gadget: f_fs: Fix race between aio_cancel() and AIO request complete

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: f_fs: Fix race between aio_cancel() and AIO request complete FFS based applications can utilize the aio_cancel() callback to dequeue pending USB requests submitted to the UDC. There is a scenario where the FFS application issues an AIO cancel call, while the UDC is handling a soft disconnect. For a DWC3 based implementation, the callstack looks like the following: DWC3 Gadget FFS Application dwc3_gadget_soft_disconnect() ... --> dwc3_stop_active_transfers() --> dwc3_gadget_giveback(-ESHUTDOWN) --> ffs_epfile_async_io_complete() ffs_aio_cancel() --> usb_ep_free_request() --> usb_ep_dequeue() There is currently no locking implemented between the AIO completion handler and AIO cancel, so the issue occurs if the completion routine is running in parallel to an AIO cancel call coming from the FFS application. As the completion call frees the USB request (io_data->req) the FFS application is also referencing it for the usb_ep_dequeue() call. This can lead to accessing a stale/hanging pointer. commit b566d38857fc ("usb: gadget: f_fs: use io_data->status consistently") relocated the usb_ep_free_request() into ffs_epfile_async_io_complete(). However, in order to properly implement locking to mitigate this issue, the spinlock can't be added to ffs_epfile_async_io_complete(), as usb_ep_dequeue() (if successfully dequeuing a USB request) will call the function driver's completion handler in the same context. Hence, leading into a deadlock. Fix this issue by moving the usb_ep_free_request() back to ffs_user_copy_worker(), and ensuring that it explicitly sets io_data->req to NULL after freeing it within the ffs->eps_lock. This resolves the race condition above, as the ffs_aio_cancel() routine will not continue attempting to dequeue a request that has already been freed, or the ffs_user_copy_work() not freeing the USB request until the AIO cancel is done referencing it. This fix depends on commit b566d38857fc ("usb: gadget: f_fs: use io_data->status consistently")

A race condition flaw was found in Ansible Engine 2.7.17 and prior, 2.8.9 and prior, 2.9.6 and prior when running a playbook with an unprivileged become user. When Ansible needs to run a module with become user, the temporary directory is created in /var/tmp. This directory is created with "umask 77 && mkdir -p <dir>"; this operation does not fail if the directory already exists and is owned by another user. An attacker could take advantage to gain control of the become user as the target directory can be retrieved by iterating '/proc/<pid>/cmdline'.
