wifi: mt76: mt7921e: fix use-after-free in free_irq()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mt76: mt7921e: fix use-after-free in free_irq() From commit a304e1b82808 ("[PATCH] Debug shared irqs"), there is a test to make sure the shared irq handler should be able to handle the unexpected event after deregistration. For this case, let's apply MT76_REMOVED flag to indicate the device was removed and do not run into the resource access anymore. mptcp: fix UaF in listener shutdown

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mptcp: fix UaF in listener shutdown As reported by Christoph after having refactored the passive socket initialization, the mptcp listener shutdown path is prone to an UaF issue. Just drop the now unnecessary code. Please note this commit depends on the two parent ones: mptcp: refactor passive socket initialization mptcp: use the workqueue to destroy unaccepted sockets

btrfs: fix use-after-free after failure to create a snapshot

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: fix use-after-free after failure to create a snapshot At ioctl.c:create_snapshot(), we allocate a pending snapshot structure and then attach it to the transaction's list of pending snapshots. After that we call btrfs_commit_transaction(), and if that returns an error we jump to 'fail' label, where we kfree() the pending snapshot structure. This can result in a later use-after-free of the pending snapshot: 1) We allocated the pending snapshot and added it to the transaction's list of pending snapshots; 2) We call btrfs_commit_transaction(), and it fails either at the first call to btrfs_run_delayed_refs() or btrfs_start_dirty_block_groups(). In both cases, we don't abort the transaction and we release our transaction handle. We jump to the 'fail' label and free the pending snapshot structure. We return with the pending snapshot still in the transaction's list; 3) Another task commits the transaction. This time there's no error at all, and then during the transaction commit it accesses a pointer to the pending snapshot structure that the snapshot creation task has already freed, resulting in a user-after-free. This issue could actually be detected by smatch, which produced the following warning: fs/btrfs/ioctl.c:843 create_snapshot() warn: '&pending_snapshot->list' not removed from list So fix this by not having the snapshot creation ioctl directly add the pending snapshot to the transaction's list. Instead add the pending snapshot to the transaction handle, and then at btrfs_commit_transaction() we add the snapshot to the list only when we can guarantee that any error returned after that point will result in a transaction abort, in which case the ioctl code can safely free the pending snapshot and no one can access it anymore.

llc: call sock_orphan() at release time

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: llc: call sock_orphan() at release time syzbot reported an interesting trace [1] caused by a stale sk->sk_wq pointer in a closed llc socket. In commit ff7b11aa481f ("net: socket: set sock->sk to NULL after calling proto_ops::release()") Eric Biggers hinted that some protocols are missing a sock_orphan(), we need to perform a full audit. In net-next, I plan to clear sock->sk from sock_orphan() and amend Eric patch to add a warning. drm/i915/gem: Really move i915_gem_context.link under ref protection

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/i915/gem: Really move i915_gem_context.link under ref protection i915_perf assumes that it can use the i915_gem_context reference to protect its i915->gem.contexts.list iteration. However, this requires that we do not remove the context from the list until after we drop the final reference and release the struct. If, as currently, we remove the context from the list during context_close(), the link.next pointer may be poisoned while we are holding the context reference and cause a GPF: [ 4070.573157] i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm:i915_perf_open_ioctl [i915]] filtering on ctx_id=0x1fffff ctx_id_mask=0x1fffff [ 4070.574881] general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address 0xdead000000000100: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP [ 4070.574897] CPU: 1 PID: 284392 Comm: amd_performance Tainted: G E 5.17.9 #180 [ 4070.574903] Hardware name: Intel Corporation NUC7i5BNK/NUC7i5BNB, BIOS BNKBL357.86A.0052.2017.0918.1346 09/18/2017 [ 4070.574907] RIP: 0010:oa_configure_all_contexts.isra.0+0x222/0x350 [i915] [ 4070.574982] Code: 08 e8 32 6e 10 e1 4d 8b 6d 50 b8 ff ff ff ff 49 83 ed 50 f0 41 0f c1 04 24 83 f8 01 0f 84 e3 00 00 00 85 c0 0f 8e fa 00 00 00 <49> 8b 45 50 48 8d 70 b0 49 8d 45 50 48 39 44 24 10 0f 85 34 fe ff [ 4070.574990] RSP: 0018:ffffc90002077b78 EFLAGS: 00010202 [ 4070.574995] RAX: 0000000000000002 RBX: 0000000000000002 RCX: 0000000000000000 [ 4070.575000] RDX: 0000000000000001 RSI: ffffc90002077b20 RDI: ffff88810ddc7c68 [ 4070.575004] RBP: 0000000000000001 R08: ffff888103242648 R09: fffffffffffffffc [ 4070.575008] R10: ffffffff82c50bc0 R11: 0000000000025c80 R12: ffff888101bf1860 [ 4070.575012] R13: dead0000000000b0 R14: ffffc90002077c04 R15: ffff88810be5cabc [ 4070.575016] FS: 00007f1ed50c0780(0000) GS:ffff88885ec80000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 [ 4070.575021] CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 [ 4070.575025] CR2: 00007f1ed5590280 CR3: 000000010ef6f005 CR4: 00000000003706e0 [ 4070.575029] Call Trace: [ 4070.575033] <TASK> [ 4070.575037] lrc_configure_all_contexts+0x13e/0x150 [i915] [ 4070.575103] gen8_enable_metric_set+0x4d/0x90 [i915] [ 4070.575164] i915_perf_open_ioctl+0xbc0/0x1500 [i915] [ 4070.575224] ? asm_common_interrupt+0x1e/0x40 [ 4070.575232] ? i915_oa_init_reg_state+0x110/0x110 [i915] [ 4070.575290] drm_ioctl_kernel+0x85/0x110 [ 4070.575296] ? update_load_avg+0x5f/0x5e0 [ 4070.575302] drm_ioctl+0x1d3/0x370 [ 4070.575307] ? i915_oa_init_reg_state+0x110/0x110 [i915] [ 4070.575382] ? gen8_gt_irq_handler+0x46/0x130 [i915] [ 4070.575445] __x64_sys_ioctl+0x3c4/0x8d0 [ 4070.575451] ? __do_softirq+0xaa/0x1d2 [ 4070.575456] do_syscall_64+0x35/0x80 [ 4070.575461] entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xae [ 4070.575467] RIP: 0033:0x7f1ed5c10397 [ 4070.575471] Code: 3c 1c e8 1c ff ff ff 85 c0 79 87 49 c7 c4 ff ff ff ff 5b 5d 4c 89 e0 41 5c c3 66 0f 1f 84 00 00 00 00 00 b8 10 00 00 00 0f 05 <48> 3d 01 f0 ff ff 73 01 c3 48 8b 0d a9 da 0d 00 f7 d8 64 89 01 48 [ 4070.575478] RSP: 002b:00007ffd65c8d7a8 EFLAGS: 00000246 ORIG_RAX: 0000000000000010 [ 4070.575484] RAX: ffffffffffffffda RBX: 0000000000000006 RCX: 00007f1ed5c10397 [ 4070.575488] RDX: 00007ffd65c8d7c0 RSI: 0000000040106476 RDI: 0000000000000006 [ 4070.575492] RBP: 00005620972f9c60 R08: 000000000000000a R09: 0000000000000005 [ 4070.575496] R10: 000000000000000d R11: 0000000000000246 R12: 000000000000000a [ 4070.575500] R13: 000000000000000d R14: 0000000000000000 R15: 00007ffd65c8d7c0 [ 4070.575505] </TASK> [ 4070.575507] Modules linked in: nls_ascii(E) nls_cp437(E) vfat(E) fat(E) i915(E) x86_pkg_temp_thermal(E) intel_powerclamp(E) crct10dif_pclmul(E) crc32_pclmul(E) crc32c_intel(E) aesni_intel(E) crypto_simd(E) intel_gtt(E) cryptd(E) ttm(E) rapl(E) intel_cstate(E) drm_kms_helper(E) cfbfillrect(E) syscopyarea(E) cfbimgblt(E) intel_uncore(E) sysfillrect(E) mei_me(E) sysimgblt(E) i2c_i801(E) fb_sys_fops(E) mei(E) intel_pch_thermal(E) i2c_smbus ---truncated---

loop: Fix use-after-free issues

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: loop: Fix use-after-free issues do_req_filebacked() calls blk_mq_complete_request() synchronously or asynchronously when using asynchronous I/O unless memory allocation fails. Hence, modify loop_handle_cmd() such that it does not dereference 'cmd' nor 'rq' after do_req_filebacked() finished unless we are sure that the request has not yet been completed. KVM: arm64: vgic-its: Avoid potential UAF in LPI translation cache

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: arm64: vgic-its: Avoid potential UAF in LPI translation cache There is a potential UAF scenario in the case of an LPI translation cache hit racing with an operation that invalidates the cache, such as a DISCARD ITS command. The root of the problem is that vgic_its_check_cache() does not elevate the refcount on the vgic_irq before dropping the lock that serializes refcount changes. Have vgic_its_check_cache() raise the refcount on the returned vgic_irq and add the corresponding decrement after queueing the interrupt.

bpf: Make bpf_refcount_acquire fallible for non-owning refs

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Make bpf_refcount_acquire fallible for non-owning refs This patch fixes an incorrect assumption made in the original bpf_refcount series [0], specifically that the BPF program calling bpf_refcount_acquire on some node can always guarantee that the node is alive. In that series, the patch adding failure behavior to rbtree_add and list_push_{front, back} breaks this assumption for non-owning references. Consider the following program: n = bpf_kptr_xchg(&mapval, NULL); /* skip error checking */ bpf_spin_lock(&l); if(bpf_rbtree_add(&t, &n->rb, less)) { bpf_refcount_acquire(n); /* Failed to add, do something else with the node */ } bpf_spin_unlock(&l); It's incorrect to assume that bpf_refcount_acquire will always succeed in this scenario. bpf_refcount_acquire is being called in a critical section here, but the lock being held is associated with rbtree t, which isn't necessarily the lock associated with the tree that the node is already in. So after bpf_rbtree_add fails to add the node and calls bpf_obj_drop in it, the program has no ownership of the node's lifetime. Therefore the node's refcount can be decr'd to 0 at any time after the failing rbtree_add. If this happens before the refcount_acquire above, the node might be free'd, and regardless refcount_acquire will be incrementing a 0 refcount. Later patches in the series exercise this scenario, resulting in the expected complaint from the kernel (without this patch's changes): refcount_t: addition on 0; use-after-free. For owning references, though, we know the above scenario is not possible and thus that bpf_refcount_acquire will always succeed. Some verifier bookkeeping is added to track "is input owning ref?" for bpf_refcount_acquire calls and return false from is_kfunc_ret_null for bpf_refcount_acquire on owning refs despite it being marked KF_RET_NULL. Existing selftests using bpf_refcount_acquire are modified where necessary to NULL-check its return value. [0]: https://lore.kernel.org/bpf/20230415201811.343116-1-davemarchevsky@fb.com/

Use-after-free in Linux kernel's fs/smb/client component

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's fs/smb/client component can be exploited to achieve local privilege escalation. In case of an error in smb3_fs_context_parse_param, ctx->password was freed but the field was not set to NULL which could lead to double free. We recommend upgrading past commit e6e43b8aa7cd3c3af686caf0c2e11819a886d705.

crypto: xts - Handle EBUSY correctly

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: xts - Handle EBUSY correctly As it is xts only handles the special return value of EINPROGRESS, which means that in all other cases it will free data related to the request. However, as the caller of xts may specify MAY_BACKLOG, we also need to expect EBUSY and treat it in the same way. Otherwise backlogged requests will trigger a use-after-free.

drm/mediatek: Clean dangling pointer on bind error path

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/mediatek: Clean dangling pointer on bind error path mtk_drm_bind() can fail, in which case drm_dev_put() is called, destroying the drm_device object. However a pointer to it was still being held in the private object, and that pointer would be passed along to DRM in mtk_drm_sys_prepare() if a suspend were triggered at that point, resulting in a panic. Clean the pointer when destroying the object in the error path to prevent this from happening.

ring-buffer: Sync IRQ works before buffer destruction

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ring-buffer: Sync IRQ works before buffer destruction If something was written to the buffer just before destruction, it may be possible (maybe not in a real system, but it did happen in ARCH=um with time-travel) to destroy the ringbuffer before the IRQ work ran, leading this KASAN report (or a crash without KASAN): BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in irq_work_run_list+0x11a/0x13a Read of size 8 at addr 000000006d640a48 by task swapper/0 CPU: 0 PID: 0 Comm: swapper Tainted: G W O 6.3.0-rc1 #7 Stack: 60c4f20f 0c203d48 41b58ab3 60f224fc 600477fa 60f35687 60c4f20f 601273dd 00000008 6101eb00 6101eab0 615be548 Call Trace: [<60047a58>] show_stack+0x25e/0x282 [<60c609e0>] dump_stack_lvl+0x96/0xfd [<60c50d4c>] print_report+0x1a7/0x5a8 [<603078d3>] kasan_report+0xc1/0xe9 [<60308950>] __asan_report_load8_noabort+0x1b/0x1d [<60232844>] irq_work_run_list+0x11a/0x13a [<602328b4>] irq_work_tick+0x24/0x34 [<6017f9dc>] update_process_times+0x162/0x196 [<6019f335>] tick_sched_handle+0x1a4/0x1c3 [<6019fd9e>] tick_sched_timer+0x79/0x10c [<601812b9>] __hrtimer_run_queues.constprop.0+0x425/0x695 [<60182913>] hrtimer_interrupt+0x16c/0x2c4 [<600486a3>] um_timer+0x164/0x183 [...] Allocated by task 411: save_stack_trace+0x99/0xb5 stack_trace_save+0x81/0x9b kasan_save_stack+0x2d/0x54 kasan_set_track+0x34/0x3e kasan_save_alloc_info+0x25/0x28 ____kasan_kmalloc+0x8b/0x97 __kasan_kmalloc+0x10/0x12 __kmalloc+0xb2/0xe8 load_elf_phdrs+0xee/0x182 [...] The buggy address belongs to the object at 000000006d640800 which belongs to the cache kmalloc-1k of size 1024 The buggy address is located 584 bytes inside of freed 1024-byte region [000000006d640800, 000000006d640c00) Add the appropriate irq_work_sync() so the work finishes before the buffers are destroyed. HID: intel-ish-hid: ipc: Fix potential use-after-free in work function

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: intel-ish-hid: ipc: Fix potential use-after-free in work function When a reset notify IPC message is received, the ISR schedules a work function and passes the ISHTP device to it via a global pointer ishtp_dev. If ish_probe() fails, the devm-managed device resources including ishtp_dev are freed, but the work is not cancelled, causing a use-after-free when the work function tries to access ishtp_dev. Use devm_work_autocancel() instead, so that the work is automatically cancelled if probe fails.

cifs: fix use-after-free bug in refresh_cache_worker()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: fix use-after-free bug in refresh_cache_worker() The UAF bug occurred because we were putting DFS root sessions in cifs_umount() while DFS cache refresher was being executed. Make DFS root sessions have same lifetime as DFS tcons so we can avoid the use-after-free bug is DFS cache refresher and other places that require IPCs to get new DFS referrals on. Bluetooth: use RCU for hci_conn_params and iterate safely in hci_sync

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: use RCU for hci_conn_params and iterate safely in hci_sync hci_update_accept_list_sync iterates over hdev->pend_le_conns and hdev->pend_le_reports, and waits for controller events in the loop body, without holding hdev lock. Meanwhile, these lists and the items may be modified e.g. by le_scan_cleanup. This can invalidate the list cursor or any other item in the list, resulting to invalid behavior (eg use-after-free). Use RCU for the hci_conn_params action lists. Since the loop bodies in hci_sync block and we cannot use RCU or hdev->lock for the whole loop, copy list items first and then iterate on the copy. Bluetooth: hci_conn: fail SCO/ISO via hci_conn_failed if ACL gone early

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: hci_conn: fail SCO/ISO via hci_conn_failed if ACL gone early Not calling hci_(dis)connect_cfm before deleting conn referred to by a socket generally results to use-after-free. When cleaning up SCO connections when the parent ACL is deleted too early, use hci_conn_failed to do the connection cleanup properly. We also need to clean up ISO connections in a similar situation when connecting has started but LE Create CIS is not yet sent, so do it too here.

The issue turns out to be in pci_remove_root_bus() which first calls pci_remove_bus() which frees the struct pci_bus when its struct device is released. Then pci_bus_release_domain_nr() is called and accesses the freed struct pci_bus. Reordering these fixes the issue.

iwlwifi: fix use-after-free

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iwlwifi: fix use-after-free If no firmware was present at all (or, presumably, all of the firmware files failed to parse), we end up unbinding by calling device_release_driver(), which calls remove(), which then in iwlwifi calls iwl_drv_stop(), freeing the 'drv' struct. However the new code I added will still erroneously access it after it was freed. Set 'failure=false' in this case to avoid the access, all data was already freed anyway.

HID: mcp-2221: prevent UAF in delayed work

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: mcp-2221: prevent UAF in delayed work If the device is plugged/unplugged without giving time for mcp_init_work() to complete, we might kick in the devm free code path and thus have unavailable struct mcp_2221 while in delayed work. Canceling the delayed_work item is enough to solve the issue, because cancel_delayed_work_sync will prevent the work item to requeue itself.

Use-after-free in io_uring ad work_flags in Linux Kernel

io_uring use work_flags to determine which identity need to grab from the calling process to make sure it is consistent with the calling process when executing IORING_OP. Some operations are missing some types, which can lead to incorrect reference counts which can then lead to a double free. We recommend upgrading the kernel past commit df3f3bb5059d20ef094d6b2f0256c4bf4127a859

virtio-mmio: don't break lifecycle of vm_dev

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: virtio-mmio: don't break lifecycle of vm_dev vm_dev has a separate lifecycle because it has a 'struct device' embedded. Thus, having a release callback for it is correct. Allocating the vm_dev struct with devres totally breaks this protection, though. Instead of waiting for the vm_dev release callback, the memory is freed when the platform_device is removed. Resulting in a use-after-free when finally the callback is to be called. To easily see the problem, compile the kernel with CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT_RELEASE and unbind with sysfs. The fix is easy, don't use devres in this case. Found during my research about object lifetime problems.

cifs: prevent use-after-free by freeing the cfile later

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: prevent use-after-free by freeing the cfile later In smb2_compound_op we have a possible use-after-free which can cause hard to debug problems later on. This was revealed during stress testing with KASAN enabled kernel. Fixing it by moving the cfile free call to a few lines below, after the usage.

lwt: Fix return values of BPF xmit ops

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lwt: Fix return values of BPF xmit ops BPF encap ops can return different types of positive values, such like NET_RX_DROP, NET_XMIT_CN, NETDEV_TX_BUSY, and so on, from function skb_do_redirect and bpf_lwt_xmit_reroute. At the xmit hook, such return values would be treated implicitly as LWTUNNEL_XMIT_CONTINUE in ip(6)_finish_output2. When this happens, skbs that have been freed would continue to the neighbor subsystem, causing use-after-free bug and kernel crashes. To fix the incorrect behavior, skb_do_redirect return values can be simply discarded, the same as tc-egress behavior. On the other hand, bpf_lwt_xmit_reroute returns useful errors to local senders, e.g. PMTU information. Thus convert its return values to avoid the conflict with LWTUNNEL_XMIT_CONTINUE.

crypto: seqiv - Handle EBUSY correctly

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: seqiv - Handle EBUSY correctly As it is seqiv only handles the special return value of EINPROGERSS, which means that in all other cases it will free data related to the request. However, as the caller of seqiv may specify MAY_BACKLOG, we also need to expect EBUSY and treat it in the same way. Otherwise backlogged requests will trigger a use-after-free.
