Junos OS: MX Series, EX9200 Series: Trio-based MPCs memory leak in VPLS with integrated routing and bridging (IRB) interface

On Juniper Networks MX Series and EX9200 Series platforms with Trio-based MPCs (Modular Port Concentrators) where Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB) interfaces are configured and mapped to a VPLS instance or a Bridge-Domain, certain Layer 2 network events at Customer Edge (CE) devices may cause memory leaks in the MPC of Provider Edge (PE) devices which can cause an out of memory condition and MPC restart. When this issue occurs, there will be temporary traffic interruption until the MPC is restored. An administrator can use the following CLI command to monitor the status of memory usage level of the MPC: user@device> show system resource-monitor fpc FPC Resource Usage Summary Free Heap Mem Watermark : 20 % Free NH Mem Watermark : 20 % Free Filter Mem Watermark : 20 % * - Watermark reached Slot # % Heap Free RTT Average RTT 1 87 PFE # % ENCAP mem Free % NH mem Free % FW mem Free 0 NA 88 99 1 NA 89 99 When the issue is occurring, the value of “% NH mem Free” will go down until the MPC restarts. Junos OS Evolved: Memory leak in arpd or ndp processes can lead to Denial of Service (DoS)

An Uncontrolled Resource Consumption vulnerability in the ARP daemon (arpd) and Network Discovery Protocol (ndp) process of Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved allows a malicious attacker on the local network to consume memory resources, ultimately resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Link-layer functions such as IPv4 and/or IPv6 address resolution may be impacted, leading to traffic loss. The processes do not recover on their own and must be manually restarted. Changes in memory usage can be monitored using the following shell commands (header shown for clarity): user@router:/var/log# ps aux | grep arpd USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 31418 59.0 0.7 *5702564* 247952 ? xxx /usr/sbin/arpd --app-name arpd -I object_select --shared-objects-mode 3 user@router:/var/log# ps aux | grep arpd USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 31418 49.1 1.0 *5813156* 351184 ? xxx /usr/sbin/arpd --app-name arpd -I object_select --shared-objects-mode 3 Memory usage can be monitored for the ndp process in a similar fashion: user@router:/var/log# ps aux | grep ndp USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 14935 0.0 0.1 *5614052* 27256 ? Junos OS: Kernel memory leak in virtual-memory due to interface flaps

The kernel memory usage represented as "temp" via 'show system virtual-memory' may constantly increase when Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB) is configured with multiple underlay physical interfaces, and one interface flaps. This memory leak can affect running daemons (processes), leading to an extended Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Junos OS Evolved: PTX Series except PTX10003: An unauthenticated adjacent attacker sending specific valid traffic can cause a memory leak in cfmman leading to FPC crash and restart

An Uncontrolled Resource Consumption vulnerability in the Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) daemon and the Connectivity Fault Management Manager (cfmman) of Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved on PTX10001-36MR, PTX10002-36QDD, PTX10004, PTX10008, PTX10016 allows an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). An attacker on an adjacent device sending specific valid traffic can cause cfmd to spike the CPU to 100% and cfmman's memory to leak, eventually to cause the FPC crash and restart. Continued receipt and processes of these specific valid packets will sustain the Denial of Service (DoS) condition. An indicator of compromise is to watch for an increase in cfmman memory rising over time by issuing the following command and evaluating the RSS number. If the RSS is growing into GBs then consider restarting the device to temporarily clear memory.   user@device> show system processes node fpc<num> detail | match cfmman Example:    show system processes node fpc0 detail | match cfmman    F S UID       PID       PPID PGID   SID   C PRI NI  ADDR SZ    WCHAN   RSS     PSR STIME TTY         TIME     CMD   4 S root      15204     1    15204  15204 0 80  0   - 90802     -      113652   4  Sep25 ?           00:15:28 /usr/bin/cfmman -p /var/pfe -o -c /usr/conf/cfmman-cfg-active.xml This issue affects Junos OS Evolved on PTX10001-36MR, PTX10002-36QDD, PTX10004, PTX10008, PTX10016: * from 23.2R1-EVO before 23.2R2-S4-EVO, * from 23.4 before 23.4R2-S4-EVO, * from 24.2 before 24.2R2-EVO, * from 24.4 before 24.4R1-S2-EVO, 24.4R2-EVO. Junos OS: Nexthop index allocation failed: private index space exhausted after incoming ARP requests to management interface

A vulnerability in the IP next-hop index database in Junos OS 17.3R3 may allow a flood of ARP requests, sent to the management interface, to exhaust the private Internal routing interfaces (IRIs) next-hop limit. Once the IRI next-hop database is full, no further next hops can be learned and existing entries cannot be cleared, leading to a sustained denial of service (DoS) condition. An indicator of compromise for this issue is the report of the following error message: %KERN-4: Nexthop index allocation failed: private index space exhausted This issue only affects the management interface, and does not impact regular transit traffic through the FPCs. This issue also only affects Junos OS 17.3R3. No prior versions of Junos OS are affected by this issue. Affected releases are Juniper Networks Junos OS: 17.3R3.

Junos OS: ACX5448: FPC memory leak due to IPv6 neighbor flaps

An Uncontrolled Resource Consumption vulnerability in the handling of IPv6 neighbor state change events in Juniper Networks Junos OS allows an adjacent attacker to cause a memory leak in the Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC) of an ACX5448 router. The continuous flapping of an IPv6 neighbor with specific timing will cause the FPC to run out of resources, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Once the condition occurs, further packet processing will be impacted, creating a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition, requiring a manual PFE restart to restore service. Junos OS: EX4300: PFE Denial of Service (DoS) upon receipt of a flood of specific ARP traffic

A Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability in the processing of a flood of specific ARP traffic in Juniper Networks Junos OS on the EX4300 switch, sent from the local broadcast domain, may allow an unauthenticated network-adjacent attacker to trigger a PFEMAN watchdog timeout, causing the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) to crash and restart. After the restart, transit traffic will be temporarily interrupted until the PFE is reprogrammed. In a virtual chassis (VC), the impacted Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC) may split from the VC temporarily, and join back into the VC once the PFE restarts. Continued receipt and processing of these packets will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: Receipt of a specific LDP message will cause a Denial of Service

In an MPLS P2MP environment a Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (RPD) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated adjacent attacker to cause high load on RPD which in turn may lead to routing protocol flaps. If a system with sensor-based-stats enabled receives a specific LDP FEC this can lead to the above condition. Continued receipted of such an LDP FEC will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This issue affects: Juniper Networks Junos OS 19.2 version 19.2R2 and later versions prior to 19.2R3-S3; 19.3 versions prior to 19.3R2-S6, 19.3R3-S2; 19.4 versions prior to 19.4R1-S4, 19.4R2-S4, 19.4R3-S2; 20.1 versions prior to 20.1R2-S1, 20.1R3; 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R2-S1, 20.2R3; 20.3 versions prior to 20.3R1-S2, 20.3R2. Junos OS: User-defined ARP Policer isn't applied on Aggregated Ethernet (AE) interface until firewall process is restarted

When user-defined ARP Policer is configured and applied on one or more Aggregated Ethernet (AE) interface units, a Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition vulnerability between the Device Control Daemon (DCD) and firewall process (dfwd) daemons of Juniper Networks Junos OS allows an attacker to bypass the user-defined ARP Policer. Junos OS: Receipt of malformed DHCPv6 packets causes jdhcpd to crash and restart.

On Juniper Networks Junos OS platforms configured as DHCPv6 local server or DHCPv6 Relay Agent, the Juniper Networks Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Daemon (JDHCPD) process might crash if a malformed DHCPv6 packet is received, resulting in a restart of the daemon. The daemon automatically restarts without intervention, but continued receipt and processing of this packet will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This issue only affects DHCPv6. DHCPv4 is not affected by this issue. This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS: 17.3 versions prior to 17.3R3-S12; 17.4 versions prior to 17.4R3-S5; 18.1 versions prior to 18.1R3-S13; 18.2 versions prior to 18.2R3-S8; 18.3 versions prior to 18.3R3-S5; 18.4 versions prior to 18.4R1-S8, 18.4R3-S7; 19.1 versions prior to 19.1R3-S5; 19.2 versions prior to 19.2R3-S2; 19.3 versions prior to 19.3R3-S2; 19.4 versions prior to 19.4R3-S2; 20.1 versions prior to 20.1R3; 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R2-S3, 20.2R3; 20.3 versions prior to 20.3R2; 20.4 versions prior to 20.4R2.

Junos OS: Denial of Service in ppmd upon receipt of malformed packet

A vulnerability in the distributed or centralized periodic packet management daemon (PPMD) of Juniper Networks Junos OS may cause receipt of a malformed packet to crash and restart the PPMD process, leading to network destabilization, service interruption, and a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Continued receipt and processing of these malformed packets will repeatedly crash the PPMD process and sustain the Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Due to the nature of the specifically crafted packet, exploitation of this issue requires direct, adjacent connectivity to the vulnerable component. This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS: 17.3 versions prior to 17.3R3-S11; 17.4 versions prior to 17.4R2-S12, 17.4R3-S4; 18.1 versions prior to 18.1R3-S12; 18.2 versions prior to 18.2R2-S8, 18.2R3-S7; 18.3 versions prior to 18.3R3-S4; 18.4 versions prior to 18.4R1-S8, 18.4R2-S7, 18.4R3-S6; 19.1 versions prior to 19.1R1-S6, 19.1R2-S2, 19.1R3-S4; 19.2 versions prior to 19.2R1-S5, 19.2R3-S1; 19.3 versions prior to 19.3R2-S5, 19.3R3-S1; 19.4 versions prior to 19.4R2-S2, 19.4R3; 20.1 versions prior to 20.1R2; 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R1-S2, 20.2R2.

Junos OS: QFX10002-32Q, QFX10002-60C, QFX10002-72Q, QFX10008, QFX10016: In EVPN-VXLAN scenarios receipt of specific genuine packets by an adjacent attacker will cause a kernel memory leak in FPC.

A kernel memory leak in QFX10002-32Q, QFX10002-60C, QFX10002-72Q, QFX10008, QFX10016 devices Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs) on Juniper Networks Junos OS allows an attacker to send genuine packets destined to the device to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) to the device. On QFX10002-32Q, QFX10002-60C, QFX10002-72Q devices the device will crash and restart. On QFX10008, QFX10016 devices, depending on the number of FPCs involved in an attack, one more more FPCs may crash and traffic through the device may be degraded in other ways, until the attack traffic stops. A reboot is required to restore service and clear the kernel memory. Continued receipt and processing of these genuine packets will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. On QFX10008, QFX10016 devices, an indicator of compromise may be the existence of DCPFE core files. Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: Receipt of a specific BGP UPDATE causes an rpd crash on devices with BGP multipath configured

A Reachable Assertion vulnerability in the Routing Protocol Daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS). When the device receives a specific BGP UPDATE packet, the rpd crashes and restarts. Continuous receipt of this specific packet will cause a sustained DoS condition. For the issue to occur, BGP multipath with "pause-computation-during-churn" must be configured on the device, and the attacker must send the paths via a BGP UPDATE from a established BGP peer. This issue affects: Junos OS: * All versions before 21.4R3-S7, * from 22.3 before 22.3R3-S3, * from 22.4 before 22.4R3-S5, * from 23.2 before 23.2R2, * from 23.4 before 23.4R2. Junos OS: A race condition on receipt of crafted LLDP packets leads to a memory leak and an LLDP crash.

A Race Condition vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS LLDP implementation allows an attacker to cause LLDP to crash leading to a Denial of Service (DoS). This issue occurs when crafted LLDP packets are received by the device from an adjacent device. Multiple LACP flaps will occur after LLDP crashes. An indicator of compromise is to evaluate log file details for lldp with RLIMIT. Intervention should occur before 85% threshold of used KB versus maximum available KB memory is reached. show log messages | match RLIMIT | match lldp | last 20 Matching statement is " /kernel: %KERNEL-[number]: Process ([pid #],lldpd) has exceeded 85% of RLIMIT_DATA: " with [] as variable data to evaluate for. Junos OS: MX Series: PFE on the line card may crash due to memory leak.

On Juniper Networks MX series, receipt of a stream of specific Layer 2 frames may cause a memory leak resulting in the packet forwarding engine (PFE) on the line card to crash and restart, causing traffic interruption. By continuously sending this stream of specific layer 2 frame, an attacker connected to the same broadcast domain can repeatedly crash the PFE, causing a prolonged Denial of Service (DoS). This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series: 17.2 versions prior to 17.2R3-S4; 17.2X75 versions prior to 17.2X75-D105.19; 17.3 versions prior to 17.3R3-S7; 17.4 versions prior to 17.4R1-S3, 17.4R2; 18.1 versions prior to 18.1R2. Junos OS: QFX10000 Series: IPv6 multicast traffic received on non-IRB interfaces causes a multicast flood

An Improper Check for Unusual or Exceptional Conditions vulnerability in the packet forwarding engine (pfe) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on QFX10000 Series allows an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). On all QFX10000 platforms in an EVPN-VxLAN scenario, if an attacker sends IPv6 multicast traffic and these packets reach the non-IRB interface of a spine switch it floods the packet to other spines and all Ethernet Segment Identifier (ESI) leaf switches. This flooding causes the packet to be forwarded in a endless loop, which can lead to saturation of the involved links and in turn impact to legitimate traffic. This issue affects Junos OS on QFX10000 Series: * all versions before 23.2R2-S7, * 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-S8, * 24.2 versions before 24.2R2-S4, * 24.4 versions before 24.4R2-S4. This issue does not affect Junos version after 24.4 as the QFX10000 Series devices are not supported on newer versions anymore.

Junos OS: MX Series: Specific traffic causes an FPC to reset

An Improper Validation of Specified Quantity in Input vulnerability in the Packet Forwarding Engine (pfe) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series allows an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). When a specific packet is received from device in the same broadcast domain, an affected system calculates the packet size incorrectly. This causes further packet processing to fail, which triggers an FPC major error, resulting in a FPC reset impacting traffic until the FPC has automatically recovered. Affected scenarios are: MAP-T, or non-IP traffic encapsulated in IP (e.g. MPLS over GRE). When this issue happens the following logs can be observed: fpc<#> CMError: /fpc/0/pfe/0/cm/0/MQSS(0)/0/MQSS_CMERROR_LI_INT_REG_UNROLL_TAIL_LENGTH_OVF (0x2205eb), scope: pfe, category: functional, severity: major, module: MQSS(0), type: LI: Unroll TAIL length overflow, oc_category: default fpc<#> Performing action reset-fru for error /fpc/0/pfe/0/cm/0/MQSS(0)/0/MQSS_CMERROR_LI_INT_REG_UNROLL_TAIL_LENGTH_OVF (0x2205eb) in module: MQSS(0) with scope: pfe category: functional level: major, oc_category: default This issue affects Junos OS on MX Series: * all versions before 23.2R2-S6, * 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-S7, * 24.2 versions before 24.2R2-S4, * 24.4 versions before 24.4R2-S4, * 25.2 versions before 25.2R2.
