s390/cpum_sf: Handle CPU hotplug remove during sampling

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/cpum_sf: Handle CPU hotplug remove during sampling CPU hotplug remove handling triggers the following function call sequence: CPUHP_AP_PERF_S390_SF_ONLINE --> s390_pmu_sf_offline_cpu() ... CPUHP_AP_PERF_ONLINE --> perf_event_exit_cpu() The s390 CPUMF sampling CPU hotplug handler invokes: s390_pmu_sf_offline_cpu() +--> cpusf_pmu_setup() +--> setup_pmc_cpu() +--> deallocate_buffers() This function de-allocates all sampling data buffers (SDBs) allocated for that CPU at event initialization. It also clears the PMU_F_RESERVED bit. The CPU is gone and can not be sampled. With the event still being active on the removed CPU, the CPU event hotplug support in kernel performance subsystem triggers the following function calls on the removed CPU: perf_event_exit_cpu() +--> perf_event_exit_cpu_context() +--> __perf_event_exit_context() +--> __perf_remove_from_context() +--> event_sched_out() +--> cpumsf_pmu_del() +--> cpumsf_pmu_stop() +--> hw_perf_event_update() to stop and remove the event. During removal of the event, the sampling device driver tries to read out the remaining samples from the sample data buffers (SDBs). But they have already been freed (and may have been re-assigned). This may lead to a use after free situation in which case the samples are most likely invalid. In the best case the memory has not been reassigned and still contains valid data. Remedy this situation and check if the CPU is still in reserved state (bit PMU_F_RESERVED set). In this case the SDBs have not been released an contain valid data. This is always the case when the event is removed (and no CPU hotplug off occured). If the PMU_F_RESERVED bit is not set, the SDB buffers are gone.

iommu/vt-d: Remove cache tags before disabling ATS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iommu/vt-d: Remove cache tags before disabling ATS The current implementation removes cache tags after disabling ATS, leading to potential memory leaks and kernel crashes. Specifically, CACHE_TAG_DEVTLB type cache tags may still remain in the list even after the domain is freed, causing a use-after-free condition. This issue really shows up when multiple VFs from different PFs passed through to a single user-space process via vfio-pci. In such cases, the kernel may crash with kernel messages like: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000014 PGD 19036a067 P4D 1940a3067 PUD 136c9b067 PMD 0 Oops: Oops: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI CPU: 74 UID: 0 PID: 3183 Comm: testCli Not tainted 6.11.9 #2 RIP: 0010:cache_tag_flush_range+0x9b/0x250 Call Trace: <TASK> ? __die+0x1f/0x60 ? page_fault_oops+0x163/0x590 ? exc_page_fault+0x72/0x190 ? asm_exc_page_fault+0x22/0x30 ? cache_tag_flush_range+0x9b/0x250 ? cache_tag_flush_range+0x5d/0x250 intel_iommu_tlb_sync+0x29/0x40 intel_iommu_unmap_pages+0xfe/0x160 __iommu_unmap+0xd8/0x1a0 vfio_unmap_unpin+0x182/0x340 [vfio_iommu_type1] vfio_remove_dma+0x2a/0xb0 [vfio_iommu_type1] vfio_iommu_type1_ioctl+0xafa/0x18e0 [vfio_iommu_type1] Move cache_tag_unassign_domain() before iommu_disable_pci_caps() to fix it.

i3c: dw: Fix use-after-free in dw_i3c_master driver due to race condition

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i3c: dw: Fix use-after-free in dw_i3c_master driver due to race condition In dw_i3c_common_probe, &master->hj_work is bound with dw_i3c_hj_work. And dw_i3c_master_irq_handler can call dw_i3c_master_irq_handle_ibis function to start the work. If we remove the module which will call dw_i3c_common_remove to make cleanup, it will free master->base through i3c_master_unregister while the work mentioned above will be used. The sequence of operations that may lead to a UAF bug is as follows: CPU0 CPU1 | dw_i3c_hj_work dw_i3c_common_remove | i3c_master_unregister(&master->base) | device_unregister(&master->dev) | device_release | //free master->base | | i3c_master_do_daa(&master->base) | //use master->base Fix it by ensuring that the work is canceled before proceeding with the cleanup in dw_i3c_common_remove.

hrtimers: Handle CPU state correctly on hotplug

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hrtimers: Handle CPU state correctly on hotplug Consider a scenario where a CPU transitions from CPUHP_ONLINE to halfway through a CPU hotunplug down to CPUHP_HRTIMERS_PREPARE, and then back to CPUHP_ONLINE: Since hrtimers_prepare_cpu() does not run, cpu_base.hres_active remains set to 1 throughout. However, during a CPU unplug operation, the tick and the clockevents are shut down at CPUHP_AP_TICK_DYING. On return to the online state, for instance CFS incorrectly assumes that the hrtick is already active, and the chance of the clockevent device to transition to oneshot mode is also lost forever for the CPU, unless it goes back to a lower state than CPUHP_HRTIMERS_PREPARE once. This round-trip reveals another issue; cpu_base.online is not set to 1 after the transition, which appears as a WARN_ON_ONCE in enqueue_hrtimer(). Aside of that, the bulk of the per CPU state is not reset either, which means there are dangling pointers in the worst case. Address this by adding a corresponding startup() callback, which resets the stale per CPU state and sets the online flag. [ tglx: Make the new callback unconditionally available, remove the online modification in the prepare() callback and clear the remaining state in the starting callback instead of the prepare callback ]

ocfs2: fix slab-use-after-free due to dangling pointer dqi_priv

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: fix slab-use-after-free due to dangling pointer dqi_priv When mounting ocfs2 and then remounting it as read-only, a slab-use-after-free occurs after the user uses a syscall to quota_getnextquota. Specifically, sb_dqinfo(sb, type)->dqi_priv is the dangling pointer. During the remounting process, the pointer dqi_priv is freed but is never set as null leaving it to be accessed. Additionally, the read-only option for remounting sets the DQUOT_SUSPENDED flag instead of setting the DQUOT_USAGE_ENABLED flags. Moreover, later in the process of getting the next quota, the function ocfs2_get_next_id is called and only checks the quota usage flags and not the quota suspended flags. To fix this, I set dqi_priv to null when it is freed after remounting with read-only and put a check for DQUOT_SUSPENDED in ocfs2_get_next_id. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style cleanups]

PCI/ASPM: Fix link state exit during switch upstream function removal

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI/ASPM: Fix link state exit during switch upstream function removal Before 456d8aa37d0f ("PCI/ASPM: Disable ASPM on MFD function removal to avoid use-after-free"), we would free the ASPM link only after the last function on the bus pertaining to the given link was removed. That was too late. If function 0 is removed before sibling function, link->downstream would point to free'd memory after. After above change, we freed the ASPM parent link state upon any function removal on the bus pertaining to a given link. That is too early. If the link is to a PCIe switch with MFD on the upstream port, then removing functions other than 0 first would free a link which still remains parent_link to the remaining downstream ports. The resulting GPFs are especially frequent during hot-unplug, because pciehp removes devices on the link bus in reverse order. On that switch, function 0 is the virtual P2P bridge to the internal bus. Free exactly when function 0 is removed -- before the parent link is obsolete, but after all subordinate links are gone. media: uvcvideo: Remove dangling pointers

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: uvcvideo: Remove dangling pointers When an async control is written, we copy a pointer to the file handle that started the operation. That pointer will be used when the device is done. Which could be anytime in the future. If the user closes that file descriptor, its structure will be freed, and there will be one dangling pointer per pending async control, that the driver will try to use. Clean all the dangling pointers during release(). To avoid adding a performance penalty in the most common case (no async operation), a counter has been introduced with some logic to make sure that it is properly handled.

wifi: rtlwifi: remove unused check_buddy_priv

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: rtlwifi: remove unused check_buddy_priv Commit 2461c7d60f9f ("rtlwifi: Update header file") introduced a global list of private data structures. Later on, commit 26634c4b1868 ("rtlwifi Modify existing bits to match vendor version 2013.02.07") started adding the private data to that list at probe time and added a hook, check_buddy_priv to find the private data from a similar device. However, that function was never used. Besides, though there is a lock for that list, it is never used. And when the probe fails, the private data is never removed from the list. This would cause a second probe to access freed memory. Remove the unused hook, structures and members, which will prevent the potential race condition on the list and its corruption during a second probe when probe fails.

wifi: ath12k: fix read pointer after free in ath12k_mac_assign_vif_to_vdev()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath12k: fix read pointer after free in ath12k_mac_assign_vif_to_vdev() In ath12k_mac_assign_vif_to_vdev(), if arvif is created on a different radio, it gets deleted from that radio through a call to ath12k_mac_unassign_link_vif(). This action frees the arvif pointer. Subsequently, there is a check involving arvif, which will result in a read-after-free scenario. Fix this by moving this check after arvif is again assigned via call to ath12k_mac_assign_link_vif(). Tested-on: QCN9274 hw2.0 PCI WLAN.WBE.1.3.1-00173-QCAHKSWPL_SILICONZ-1

sched/psi: Fix use-after-free in ep_remove_wait_queue()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sched/psi: Fix use-after-free in ep_remove_wait_queue() If a non-root cgroup gets removed when there is a thread that registered trigger and is polling on a pressure file within the cgroup, the polling waitqueue gets freed in the following path: do_rmdir cgroup_rmdir kernfs_drain_open_files cgroup_file_release cgroup_pressure_release psi_trigger_destroy However, the polling thread still has a reference to the pressure file and will access the freed waitqueue when the file is closed or upon exit: fput ep_eventpoll_release ep_free ep_remove_wait_queue remove_wait_queue This results in use-after-free as pasted below. The fundamental problem here is that cgroup_file_release() (and consequently waitqueue's lifetime) is not tied to the file's real lifetime. Using wake_up_pollfree() here might be less than ideal, but it is in line with the comment at commit 42288cb44c4b ("wait: add wake_up_pollfree()") since the waitqueue's lifetime is not tied to file's one and can be considered as another special case. While this would be fixable by somehow making cgroup_file_release() be tied to the fput(), it would require sizable refactoring at cgroups or higher layer which might be more justifiable if we identify more cases like this. drm/dp_mst: Ensure mst_primary pointer is valid in drm_dp_mst_handle_up_req()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/dp_mst: Ensure mst_primary pointer is valid in drm_dp_mst_handle_up_req() While receiving an MST up request message from one thread in drm_dp_mst_handle_up_req(), the MST topology could be removed from another thread via drm_dp_mst_topology_mgr_set_mst(false), freeing mst_primary and setting drm_dp_mst_topology_mgr::mst_primary to NULL. This could lead to a NULL deref/use-after-free of mst_primary in drm_dp_mst_handle_up_req(). Avoid the above by holding a reference for mst_primary in drm_dp_mst_handle_up_req() while it's used. v2: Fix kfreeing the request if getting an mst_primary reference fails.

btrfs: flush delalloc workers queue before stopping cleaner kthread during unmount

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: flush delalloc workers queue before stopping cleaner kthread during unmount During the unmount path, at close_ctree(), we first stop the cleaner kthread, using kthread_stop() which frees the associated task_struct, and then stop and destroy all the work queues. However after we stopped the cleaner we may still have a worker from the delalloc_workers queue running inode.c:submit_compressed_extents(), which calls btrfs_add_delayed_iput(), which in turn tries to wake up the cleaner kthread - which was already destroyed before, resulting in a use-after-free on the task_struct. bpf: Fix UAF via mismatching bpf_prog/attachment RCU flavors

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix UAF via mismatching bpf_prog/attachment RCU flavors Uprobes always use bpf_prog_run_array_uprobe() under tasks-trace-RCU protection. But it is possible to attach a non-sleepable BPF program to a uprobe, and non-sleepable BPF programs are freed via normal RCU (see __bpf_prog_put_noref()). This leads to UAF of the bpf_prog because a normal RCU grace period does not imply a tasks-trace-RCU grace period. Fix it by explicitly waiting for a tasks-trace-RCU grace period after removing the attachment of a bpf_prog to a perf_event.

memory: tegra20-emc: fix an OF node reference bug in tegra_emc_find_node_by_ram_code()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: memory: tegra20-emc: fix an OF node reference bug in tegra_emc_find_node_by_ram_code() As of_find_node_by_name() release the reference of the argument device node, tegra_emc_find_node_by_ram_code() releases some device nodes while still in use, resulting in possible UAFs. According to the bindings and the in-tree DTS files, the "emc-tables" node is always device's child node with the property "nvidia,use-ram-code", and the "lpddr2" node is a child of the "emc-tables" node. Thus utilize the for_each_child_of_node() macro and of_get_child_by_name() instead of of_find_node_by_name() to simplify the code. This bug was found by an experimental verification tool that I am developing. [krzysztof: applied v1, adjust the commit msg to incorporate v2 parts]

net: defer final 'struct net' free in netns dismantle

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: defer final 'struct net' free in netns dismantle Ilya reported a slab-use-after-free in dst_destroy [1] Issue is in xfrm6_net_init() and xfrm4_net_init() : They copy xfrm[46]_dst_ops_template into net->xfrm.xfrm[46]_dst_ops. But net structure might be freed before all the dst callbacks are called. So when dst_destroy() calls later : if (dst->ops->destroy) dst->ops->destroy(dst); dst->ops points to the old net->xfrm.xfrm[46]_dst_ops, which has been freed. See a relevant issue fixed in : ac888d58869b ("net: do not delay dst_entries_add() in dst_release()") A fix is to queue the 'struct net' to be freed after one another cleanup_net() round (and existing rcu_barrier()) [1] BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in dst_destroy (net/core/dst.c:112) Read of size 8 at addr ffff8882137ccab0 by task swapper/37/0 Dec 03 05:46:18 kernel: CPU: 37 UID: 0 PID: 0 Comm: swapper/37 Kdump: loaded Not tainted 6.12.0 #67 Hardware name: Red Hat KVM/RHEL, BIOS 1.16.1-1.el9 04/01/2014 Call Trace: <IRQ> dump_stack_lvl (lib/dump_stack.c:124) print_address_description.constprop.0 (mm/kasan/report.c:378) ? dst_destroy (net/core/dst.c:112) print_report (mm/kasan/report.c:489) ? dst_destroy (net/core/dst.c:112) ? kasan_addr_to_slab (mm/kasan/common.c:37) kasan_report (mm/kasan/report.c:603) ? dst_destroy (net/core/dst.c:112) ? rcu_do_batch (kernel/rcu/tree.c:2567) dst_destroy (net/core/dst.c:112) rcu_do_batch (kernel/rcu/tree.c:2567) ? __pfx_rcu_do_batch (kernel/rcu/tree.c:2491) ? lockdep_hardirqs_on_prepare (kernel/locking/lockdep.c:4339 kernel/locking/lockdep.c:4406) rcu_core (kernel/rcu/tree.c:2825) handle_softirqs (kernel/softirq.c:554) __irq_exit_rcu (kernel/softirq.c:589 kernel/softirq.c:428 kernel/softirq.c:637) irq_exit_rcu (kernel/softirq.c:651) sysvec_apic_timer_interrupt (arch/x86/kernel/apic/apic.c:1049 arch/x86/kernel/apic/apic.c:1049) </IRQ> <TASK> asm_sysvec_apic_timer_interrupt (./arch/x86/include/asm/idtentry.h:702) RIP: 0010:default_idle (./arch/x86/include/asm/irqflags.h:37 ./arch/x86/include/asm/irqflags.h:92 arch/x86/kernel/process.c:743) Code: 00 4d 29 c8 4c 01 c7 4c 29 c2 e9 6e ff ff ff 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 66 90 0f 00 2d c7 c9 27 00 fb f4 <fa> c3 cc cc cc cc 66 66 2e 0f 1f 84 00 00 00 00 00 0f 1f 40 00 90 RSP: 0018:ffff888100d2fe00 EFLAGS: 00000246 RAX: 00000000001870ed RBX: 1ffff110201a5fc2 RCX: ffffffffb61a3e46 RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: 0000000000000000 RDI: ffffffffb3d4d123 RBP: 0000000000000000 R08: 0000000000000001 R09: ffffed11c7e1835d R10: ffff888e3f0c1aeb R11: 0000000000000000 R12: 0000000000000000 R13: ffff888100d20000 R14: dffffc0000000000 R15: 0000000000000000 ? ct_kernel_exit.constprop.0 (kernel/context_tracking.c:148) ? cpuidle_idle_call (kernel/sched/idle.c:186) default_idle_call (./include/linux/cpuidle.h:143 kernel/sched/idle.c:118) cpuidle_idle_call (kernel/sched/idle.c:186) ? __pfx_cpuidle_idle_call (kernel/sched/idle.c:168) ? lock_release (kernel/locking/lockdep.c:467 kernel/locking/lockdep.c:5848) ? lockdep_hardirqs_on_prepare (kernel/locking/lockdep.c:4347 kernel/locking/lockdep.c:4406) ? tsc_verify_tsc_adjust (arch/x86/kernel/tsc_sync.c:59) do_idle (kernel/sched/idle.c:326) cpu_startup_entry (kernel/sched/idle.c:423 (discriminator 1)) start_secondary (arch/x86/kernel/smpboot.c:202 arch/x86/kernel/smpboot.c:282) ? __pfx_start_secondary (arch/x86/kernel/smpboot.c:232) ? soft_restart_cpu (arch/x86/kernel/head_64.S:452) common_startup_64 (arch/x86/kernel/head_64.S:414) </TASK> Dec 03 05:46:18 kernel: Allocated by task 12184: kasan_save_stack (mm/kasan/common.c:48) kasan_save_track (./arch/x86/include/asm/current.h:49 mm/kasan/common.c:60 mm/kasan/common.c:69) __kasan_slab_alloc (mm/kasan/common.c:319 mm/kasan/common.c:345) kmem_cache_alloc_noprof (mm/slub.c:4085 mm/slub.c:4134 mm/slub.c:4141) copy_net_ns (net/core/net_namespace.c:421 net/core/net_namespace.c:480) create_new_namespaces ---truncated---

KVM: Explicitly verify target vCPU is online in kvm_get_vcpu()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: Explicitly verify target vCPU is online in kvm_get_vcpu() Explicitly verify the target vCPU is fully online _prior_ to clamping the index in kvm_get_vcpu(). If the index is "bad", the nospec clamping will generate '0', i.e. KVM will return vCPU0 instead of NULL. In practice, the bug is unlikely to cause problems, as it will only come into play if userspace or the guest is buggy or misbehaving, e.g. KVM may send interrupts to vCPU0 instead of dropping them on the floor. However, returning vCPU0 when it shouldn't exist per online_vcpus is problematic now that KVM uses an xarray for the vCPUs array, as KVM needs to insert into the xarray before publishing the vCPU to userspace (see commit c5b077549136 ("KVM: Convert the kvm->vcpus array to a xarray")), i.e. before vCPU creation is guaranteed to succeed. As a result, incorrectly providing access to vCPU0 will trigger a use-after-free if vCPU0 is dereferenced and kvm_vm_ioctl_create_vcpu() bails out of vCPU creation due to an error and frees vCPU0. Commit afb2acb2e3a3 ("KVM: Fix vcpu_array[0] races") papered over that issue, but in doing so introduced an unsolvable teardown conundrum. Preventing accesses to vCPU0 before it's fully online will allow reverting commit afb2acb2e3a3, without re-introducing the vcpu_array[0] UAF race.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Oops - BUG: Fatal exception This happens because pps_device_destruct() frees the pps_device with the embedded cdev immediately after calling cdev_del(), but, as the comment above cdev_del() notes, fops for previously opened cdevs are still callable even after cdev_del() returns. I think this bug has always been there: I can't explain why it suddenly started happening every time I reboot this particular board. In commit d953e0e837e6 ("pps: Fix a use-after free bug when unregistering a source."), George Spelvin suggested removing the embedded cdev. That seems like the simplest way to fix this, so I've implemented his suggestion, using __register_chrdev() with pps_idr becoming the source of truth for which minor corresponds to which device. But now that pps_idr defines userspace visibility instead of cdev_add(), we need to be sure the pps->dev refcount can't reach zero while userspace can still find it again. So, the idr_remove() call moves to pps_unregister_cdev(), and pps_idr now holds a reference to pps->dev. pps_core: source serial1 got cdev (251:1) <...> pps pps1: removed pps_core: unregistering pps1 pps_core: deallocating pps1

nilfs2: fix potential out-of-bounds memory access in nilfs_find_entry()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: fix potential out-of-bounds memory access in nilfs_find_entry() Syzbot reported that when searching for records in a directory where the inode's i_size is corrupted and has a large value, memory access outside the folio/page range may occur, or a use-after-free bug may be detected if KASAN is enabled. This is because nilfs_last_byte(), which is called by nilfs_find_entry() and others to calculate the number of valid bytes of directory data in a page from i_size and the page index, loses the upper 32 bits of the 64-bit size information due to an inappropriate type of local variable to which the i_size value is assigned. This caused a large byte offset value due to underflow in the end address calculation in the calling nilfs_find_entry(), resulting in memory access that exceeds the folio/page size. Fix this issue by changing the type of the local variable causing the bit loss from "unsigned int" to "u64". The return value of nilfs_last_byte() is also of type "unsigned int", but it is truncated so as not to exceed PAGE_SIZE and no bit loss occurs, so no change is required.

btrfs: ref-verify: fix use-after-free after invalid ref action

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: ref-verify: fix use-after-free after invalid ref action At btrfs_ref_tree_mod() after we successfully inserted the new ref entry (local variable 'ref') into the respective block entry's rbtree (local variable 'be'), if we find an unexpected action of BTRFS_DROP_DELAYED_REF, we error out and free the ref entry without removing it from the block entry's rbtree. Then in the error path of btrfs_ref_tree_mod() we call btrfs_free_ref_cache(), which iterates over all block entries and then calls free_block_entry() for each one, and there we will trigger a use-after-free when we are called against the block entry to which we added the freed ref entry to its rbtree, since the rbtree still points to the block entry, as we didn't remove it from the rbtree before freeing it in the error path at btrfs_ref_tree_mod(). Fix this by removing the new ref entry from the rbtree before freeing it. PCI: endpoint: Fix PCI domain ID release in pci_epc_destroy()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI: endpoint: Fix PCI domain ID release in pci_epc_destroy() pci_epc_destroy() invokes pci_bus_release_domain_nr() to release the PCI domain ID, but there are two issues: - 'epc->dev' is passed to pci_bus_release_domain_nr() which was already freed by device_unregister(), leading to a use-after-free issue. - Domain ID corresponds to the EPC device parent, so passing 'epc->dev' is also wrong. Fix these issues by passing 'epc->dev.parent' to pci_bus_release_domain_nr() and also do it before device_unregister(). [mani: reworded subject and description]

nfsd: make sure exp active before svc_export_show

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: make sure exp active before svc_export_show The function `e_show` was called with protection from RCU. This only ensures that `exp` will not be freed. Therefore, the reference count for `exp` can drop to zero, which will trigger a refcount use-after-free warning when `exp_get` is called. To resolve this issue, use `cache_get_rcu` to ensure that `exp` remains active. ------------[ cut here ]------------ refcount_t: addition on 0; use-after-free. btrfs: fix use-after-free warning in btrfs_get_or_create_delayed_node()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: fix use-after-free warning in btrfs_get_or_create_delayed_node() Previously, btrfs_get_or_create_delayed_node() set the delayed_node's refcount before acquiring the root->delayed_nodes lock. Commit e8513c012de7 ("btrfs: implement ref_tracker for delayed_nodes") moved refcount_set inside the critical section, which means there is no longer a memory barrier between setting the refcount and setting btrfs_inode->delayed_node. Without that barrier, the stores to node->refs and btrfs_inode->delayed_node may become visible out of order. Another thread can then read btrfs_inode->delayed_node and attempt to increment a refcount that hasn't been set yet, leading to a refcounting bug and a use-after-free warning. The fix is to move refcount_set back to where it was to take advantage of the implicit memory barrier provided by lock acquisition. Because the allocations now happen outside of the lock's critical section, they can use GFP_NOFS instead of GFP_ATOMIC.

tcp: Fix use-after-free of nreq in reqsk_timer_handler().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tcp: Fix use-after-free of nreq in reqsk_timer_handler(). The cited commit replaced inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop_and_put() with __inet_csk_reqsk_queue_drop() and reqsk_put() in reqsk_timer_handler(). Then, oreq should be passed to reqsk_put() instead of req; otherwise use-after-free of nreq could happen when reqsk is migrated but the retry attempt failed (e.g. due to timeout). Let's pass oreq to reqsk_put().

NFSv4.0: Fix a use-after-free problem in the asynchronous open()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFSv4.0: Fix a use-after-free problem in the asynchronous open() Yang Erkun reports that when two threads are opening files at the same time, and are forced to abort before a reply is seen, then the call to nfs_release_seqid() in nfs4_opendata_free() can result in a use-after-free of the pointer to the defunct rpc task of the other thread. The fix is to ensure that if the RPC call is aborted before the call to nfs_wait_on_sequence() is complete, then we must call nfs_release_seqid() in nfs4_open_release() before the rpc_task is freed.

net/sched: stop qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog on TC_H_ROOT

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/sched: stop qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog on TC_H_ROOT In qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog, Qdiscs with major handle ffff: are assumed to be either root or ingress. This assumption is bogus since it's valid to create egress qdiscs with major handle ffff: Budimir Markovic found that for qdiscs like DRR that maintain an active class list, it will cause a UAF with a dangling class pointer. In 066a3b5b2346, the concern was to avoid iterating over the ingress qdisc since its parent is itself. The proper fix is to stop when parent TC_H_ROOT is reached because the only way to retrieve ingress is when a hierarchy which does not contain a ffff: major handle call into qdisc_lookup with TC_H_MAJ(TC_H_ROOT). In the scenario where major ffff: is an egress qdisc in any of the tree levels, the updates will also propagate to TC_H_ROOT, which then the iteration must stop. net/sched/sch_api.c | 2 +- 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+), 1 deletion(-)

As a result, when the tcp sock in netns_1 processes the received message, it sends the message (FIN message) in the sending queue, and the tcp timer is re-established. When the network namespace is deleted, the net structure accessed by tcp's timer handler function causes problems. To fix this problem, let's hold netns refcnt for the tcp kernel socket as done in other modules. This is an ugly hack which can easily be backported to earlier kernels. A proper fix which cleans up the interfaces will follow, but may not be so easy to backport.

ALSA: 6fire: Release resources at card release

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: 6fire: Release resources at card release The current 6fire code tries to release the resources right after the call of usb6fire_chip_abort(). But at this moment, the card object might be still in use (as we're calling snd_card_free_when_closed()). For avoid potential UAFs, move the release of resources to the card's private_free instead of the manual call of usb6fire_chip_destroy() at the USB disconnect callback.

PCI: Fix use-after-free of slot->bus on hot remove

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI: Fix use-after-free of slot->bus on hot remove Dennis reports a boot crash on recent Lenovo laptops with a USB4 dock. Since commit 0fc70886569c ("thunderbolt: Reset USB4 v2 host router") and commit 59a54c5f3dbd ("thunderbolt: Reset topology created by the boot firmware"), USB4 v2 and v1 Host Routers are reset on probe of the thunderbolt driver. The reset clears the Presence Detect State and Data Link Layer Link Active bits at the USB4 Host Router's Root Port and thus causes hot removal of the dock. The crash occurs when pciehp is unbound from one of the dock's Downstream Ports: pciehp creates a pci_slot on bind and destroys it on unbind. The pci_slot contains a pointer to the pci_bus below the Downstream Port, but a reference on that pci_bus is never acquired. The pci_bus is destroyed before the pci_slot, so a use-after-free ensues when pci_slot_release() accesses slot->bus. In principle this should not happen because pci_stop_bus_device() unbinds pciehp (and therefore destroys the pci_slot) before the pci_bus is destroyed by pci_remove_bus_device(). However the stacktrace provided by Dennis shows that pciehp is unbound from pci_remove_bus_device() instead of pci_stop_bus_device(). To understand the significance of this, one needs to know that the PCI core uses a two step process to remove a portion of the hierarchy: It first unbinds all drivers in the sub-hierarchy in pci_stop_bus_device() and then actually removes the devices in pci_remove_bus_device(). There is no precaution to prevent driver binding in-between pci_stop_bus_device() and pci_remove_bus_device(). In Dennis' case, it seems removal of the hierarchy by pciehp races with driver binding by pci_bus_add_devices(). pciehp is bound to the Downstream Port after pci_stop_bus_device() has run, so it is unbound by pci_remove_bus_device() instead of pci_stop_bus_device(). Because the pci_bus has already been destroyed at that point, accesses to it result in a use-after-free. One might conclude that driver binding needs to be prevented after pci_stop_bus_device() has run. However it seems risky that pci_slot points to pci_bus without holding a reference. Solely relying on correct ordering of driver unbind versus pci_bus destruction is certainly not defensive programming. If pci_slot has a need to access data in pci_bus, it ought to acquire a reference. Amend pci_create_slot() accordingly. Dennis reports that the crash is not reproducible with this change. smb: prevent use-after-free due to open_cached_dir error paths

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: prevent use-after-free due to open_cached_dir error paths If open_cached_dir() encounters an error parsing the lease from the server, the error handling may race with receiving a lease break, resulting in open_cached_dir() freeing the cfid while the queued work is pending. Update open_cached_dir() to drop refs rather than directly freeing the cfid. Have cached_dir_lease_break(), cfids_laundromat_worker(), and invalidate_all_cached_dirs() clear has_lease immediately while still holding cfids->cfid_list_lock, and then use this to also simplify the reference counting in cfids_laundromat_worker() and invalidate_all_cached_dirs(). smb: client: Fix use-after-free of network namespace.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: Fix use-after-free of network namespace. Recently, we got a customer report that CIFS triggers oops while reconnecting to a server. [0] The workload runs on Kubernetes, and some pods mount CIFS servers in non-root network namespaces. The problem rarely happened, but it was always while the pod was dying. The root cause is wrong reference counting for network namespace. CIFS uses kernel sockets, which do not hold refcnt of the netns that the socket belongs to. That means CIFS must ensure the socket is always freed before its netns; otherwise, use-after-free happens. The repro steps are roughly: 1. mount CIFS in a non-root netns 2. drop packets from the netns 3. destroy the netns 4. unmount CIFS We can reproduce the issue quickly with the script [1] below and see the splat [2] if CONFIG_NET_NS_REFCNT_TRACKER is enabled. When the socket is TCP, it is hard to guarantee the netns lifetime without holding refcnt due to async timers. Let's hold netns refcnt for each socket as done for SMC in commit 9744d2bf1976 ("smc: Fix use-after-free in tcp_write_timer_handler()."). Note that we need to move put_net() from cifs_put_tcp_session() to clean_demultiplex_info(); otherwise, __sock_create() still could touch a freed netns while cifsd tries to reconnect from cifs_demultiplex_thread(). Also, maybe_get_net() cannot be put just before __sock_create() because the code is not under RCU and there is a small chance that the same address happened to be reallocated to another netns. ubifs: authentication: Fix use-after-free in ubifs_tnc_end_commit

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ubifs: authentication: Fix use-after-free in ubifs_tnc_end_commit After an insertion in TNC, the tree might split and cause a node to change its `znode->parent`. A further deletion of other nodes in the tree (which also could free the nodes), the aforementioned node's `znode->cparent` could still point to a freed node. This `znode->cparent` may not be updated when getting nodes to commit in `ubifs_tnc_start_commit()`. This could then trigger a use-after-free when accessing the `znode->cparent` in `write_index()` in `ubifs_tnc_end_commit()`. This can be triggered by running rm -f /etc/test-file.bin dd if=/dev/urandom of=/etc/test-file.bin bs=1M count=60 conv=fsync in a loop, and with `CONFIG_UBIFS_FS_AUTHENTICATION`. KASAN then reports: BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in ubifs_tnc_end_commit+0xa5c/0x1950 Write of size 32 at addr ffffff800a3af86c by task ubifs_bgt0_20/153 Call trace: dump_backtrace+0x0/0x340 show_stack+0x18/0x24 dump_stack_lvl+0x9c/0xbc print_address_description.constprop.0+0x74/0x2b0 kasan_report+0x1d8/0x1f0 kasan_check_range+0xf8/0x1a0 memcpy+0x84/0xf4 ubifs_tnc_end_commit+0xa5c/0x1950 do_commit+0x4e0/0x1340 ubifs_bg_thread+0x234/0x2e0 kthread+0x36c/0x410 ret_from_fork+0x10/0x20 Allocated by task 401: kasan_save_stack+0x38/0x70 __kasan_kmalloc+0x8c/0xd0 __kmalloc+0x34c/0x5bc tnc_insert+0x140/0x16a4 ubifs_tnc_add+0x370/0x52c ubifs_jnl_write_data+0x5d8/0x870 do_writepage+0x36c/0x510 ubifs_writepage+0x190/0x4dc __writepage+0x58/0x154 write_cache_pages+0x394/0x830 do_writepages+0x1f0/0x5b0 filemap_fdatawrite_wbc+0x170/0x25c file_write_and_wait_range+0x140/0x190 ubifs_fsync+0xe8/0x290 vfs_fsync_range+0xc0/0x1e4 do_fsync+0x40/0x90 __arm64_sys_fsync+0x34/0x50 invoke_syscall.constprop.0+0xa8/0x260 do_el0_svc+0xc8/0x1f0 el0_svc+0x34/0x70 el0t_64_sync_handler+0x108/0x114 el0t_64_sync+0x1a4/0x1a8 Freed by task 403: kasan_save_stack+0x38/0x70 kasan_set_track+0x28/0x40 kasan_set_free_info+0x28/0x4c __kasan_slab_free+0xd4/0x13c kfree+0xc4/0x3a0 tnc_delete+0x3f4/0xe40 ubifs_tnc_remove_range+0x368/0x73c ubifs_tnc_remove_ino+0x29c/0x2e0 ubifs_jnl_delete_inode+0x150/0x260 ubifs_evict_inode+0x1d4/0x2e4 evict+0x1c8/0x450 iput+0x2a0/0x3c4 do_unlinkat+0x2cc/0x490 __arm64_sys_unlinkat+0x90/0x100 invoke_syscall.constprop.0+0xa8/0x260 do_el0_svc+0xc8/0x1f0 el0_svc+0x34/0x70 el0t_64_sync_handler+0x108/0x114 el0t_64_sync+0x1a4/0x1a8 The offending `memcpy()` in `ubifs_copy_hash()` has a use-after-free when a node becomes root in TNC but still has a `cparent` to an already freed node. More specifically, consider the following TNC: zroot / / zp1 / / zn Inserting a new node `zn_new` with a key smaller then `zn` will trigger a split in `tnc_insert()` if `zp1` is full: zroot / \ / \ zp1 zp2 / \ / \ zn_new zn `zn->parent` has now been moved to `zp2`, *but* `zn->cparent` still points to `zp1`. Now, consider a removal of all the nodes _except_ `zn`. Just when `tnc_delete()` is about to delete `zroot` and `zp2`: zroot \ \ zp2 \ \ zn `zroot` and `zp2` get freed and the tree collapses: zn `zn` now becomes the new `zroot`. `get_znodes_to_commit()` will now only find `zn`, the new `zroot`, and `write_index()` will check its `znode->cparent` that wrongly points to the already freed `zp1`. `ubifs_copy_hash()` thus gets wrongly called with `znode->cparent->zbranch[znode->iip].hash` that triggers the use-after-free! Fix this by explicitly setting `znode->cparent` to `NULL` in `get_znodes_to_commit()` for the root node. The search for the dirty nodes ---truncated---
