nfsd: fix nfsd_file reference leak in nfsd4_add_rdaccess_to_wrdeleg()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfsd: fix nfsd_file reference leak in nfsd4_add_rdaccess_to_wrdeleg() nfsd4_add_rdaccess_to_wrdeleg() unconditionally overwrites fp->fi_fds[O_RDONLY] with a newly acquired nfsd_file. However, if the client already has a SHARE_ACCESS_READ open from a previous OPEN operation, this action overwrites the existing pointer without releasing its reference, orphaning the previous reference. Additionally, the function originally stored the same nfsd_file pointer in both fp->fi_fds[O_RDONLY] and fp->fi_rdeleg_file with only a single reference. When put_deleg_file() runs, it clears fi_rdeleg_file and calls nfs4_file_put_access() to release the file. However, nfs4_file_put_access() only releases fi_fds[O_RDONLY] when the fi_access[O_RDONLY] counter drops to zero. If another READ open exists on the file, the counter remains elevated and the nfsd_file reference from the delegation is never released. This potentially causes open conflicts on that file. Then, on server shutdown, these leaks cause __nfsd_file_cache_purge() to encounter files with an elevated reference count that cannot be cleaned up, ultimately triggering a BUG() in kmem_cache_destroy() because there are still nfsd_file objects allocated in that cache.

x86/efistub: Call mixed mode boot services on the firmware's stack

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: x86/efistub: Call mixed mode boot services on the firmware's stack Normally, the EFI stub calls into the EFI boot services using the stack that was live when the stub was entered. According to the UEFI spec, this stack needs to be at least 128k in size - this might seem large but all asynchronous processing and event handling in EFI runs from the same stack and so quite a lot of space may be used in practice. In mixed mode, the situation is a bit different: the bootloader calls the 32-bit EFI stub entry point, which calls the decompressor's 32-bit entry point, where the boot stack is set up, using a fixed allocation of 16k. This stack is still in use when the EFI stub is started in 64-bit mode, and so all calls back into the EFI firmware will be using the decompressor's limited boot stack. Due to the placement of the boot stack right after the boot heap, any stack overruns have gone unnoticed. However, commit 5c4feadb0011983b ("x86/decompressor: Move global symbol references to C code") moved the definition of the boot heap into C code, and now the boot stack is placed right at the base of BSS, where any overruns will corrupt the end of the .data section. While it would be possible to work around this by increasing the size of the boot stack, doing so would affect all x86 systems, and mixed mode systems are a tiny (and shrinking) fraction of the x86 installed base. So instead, record the firmware stack pointer value when entering from the 32-bit firmware, and switch to this stack every time a EFI boot service call is made.

fbdev: hyperv_fb: Fix hang in kdump kernel when on Hyper-V Gen 2 VMs

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: hyperv_fb: Fix hang in kdump kernel when on Hyper-V Gen 2 VMs Gen 2 Hyper-V VMs boot via EFI and have a standard EFI framebuffer device. When the kdump kernel runs in such a VM, loading the efifb driver may hang because of accessing the framebuffer at the wrong memory address. The scenario occurs when the hyperv_fb driver in the original kernel moves the framebuffer to a different MMIO address because of conflicts with an already-running efifb or simplefb driver. The hyperv_fb driver then informs Hyper-V of the change, which is allowed by the Hyper-V FB VMBus device protocol. However, when the kexec command loads the kdump kernel into crash memory via the kexec_file_load() system call, the system call doesn't know the framebuffer has moved, and it sets up the kdump screen_info using the original framebuffer address. The transition to the kdump kernel does not go through the Hyper-V host, so Hyper-V does not reset the framebuffer address like it would do on a reboot. When efifb tries to run, it accesses a non-existent framebuffer address, which traps to the Hyper-V host. After many such accesses, the Hyper-V host thinks the guest is being malicious, and throttles the guest to the point that it runs very slowly or appears to have hung. When the kdump kernel is loaded into crash memory via the kexec_load() system call, the problem does not occur. In this case, the kexec command builds the screen_info table itself in user space from data returned by the FBIOGET_FSCREENINFO ioctl against /dev/fb0, which gives it the new framebuffer location. This problem was originally reported in 2020 [1], resulting in commit 3cb73bc3fa2a ("hyperv_fb: Update screen_info after removing old framebuffer"). This commit solved the problem by setting orig_video_isVGA to 0, so the kdump kernel was unaware of the EFI framebuffer. The efifb driver did not try to load, and no hang occurred. But in 2024, commit c25a19afb81c ("fbdev/hyperv_fb: Do not clear global screen_info") effectively reverted 3cb73bc3fa2a. Commit c25a19afb81c has no reference to 3cb73bc3fa2a, so perhaps it was done without knowing the implications that were reported with 3cb73bc3fa2a. In any case, as of commit c25a19afb81c, the original problem came back again. Interestingly, the hyperv_drm driver does not have this problem because it never moves the framebuffer. The difference is that the hyperv_drm driver removes any conflicting framebuffers *before* allocating an MMIO address, while the hyperv_fb drivers removes conflicting framebuffers *after* allocating an MMIO address. With the "after" ordering, hyperv_fb may encounter a conflict and move the framebuffer to a different MMIO address. But the conflict is essentially bogus because it is removed a few lines of code later. Rather than fix the problem with the approach from 2020 in commit 3cb73bc3fa2a, instead slightly reorder the steps in hyperv_fb so conflicting framebuffers are removed before allocating an MMIO address. Then the default framebuffer MMIO address should always be available, and there's never any confusion about which framebuffer address the kdump kernel should use -- it's always the original address provided by the Hyper-V host. This approach is already used by the hyperv_drm driver, and is consistent with the usage guidelines at the head of the module with the function aperture_remove_conflicting_devices(). This approach also solves a related minor problem when kexec_load() is used to load the kdump kernel. With current code, unbinding and rebinding the hyperv_fb driver could result in the framebuffer moving back to the default framebuffer address, because on the rebind there are no conflicts. If such a move is done after the kdump kernel is loaded with the new framebuffer address, at kdump time it could again have the wrong address. This problem and fix are described in terms of the kdump kernel, but it can also occur ---truncated---

nvme-multipath: fix lockdep WARN due to partition scan work

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvme-multipath: fix lockdep WARN due to partition scan work Blktests test cases nvme/014, 057 and 058 fail occasionally due to a lockdep WARN. As reported in the Closes tag URL, the WARN indicates that a deadlock can happen due to the dependency among disk->open_mutex, kblockd workqueue completion and partition_scan_work completion. To avoid the lockdep WARN and the potential deadlock, cut the dependency by running the partition_scan_work not by kblockd workqueue but by nvme_wq.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: page_pool: always add GFP_NOWARN for ATOMIC allocations Driver authors often forget to add GFP_NOWARN for page allocation from the datapath. clk: sunxi-ng: common: Don't call hw_to_ccu_common on hw without common

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: clk: sunxi-ng: common: Don't call hw_to_ccu_common on hw without common In order to set the rate range of a hw sunxi_ccu_probe calls hw_to_ccu_common() assuming all entries in desc->ccu_clks are contained in a ccu_common struct. This assumption is incorrect and, in consequence, causes invalid pointer de-references. Remove the faulty call. Instead, add one more loop that iterates over the ccu_clks and sets the rate range, if required.

dmaengine: idxd: Convert spinlock to mutex to lock evl workqueue

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dmaengine: idxd: Convert spinlock to mutex to lock evl workqueue drain_workqueue() cannot be called safely in a spinlocked context due to possible task rescheduling. In the multi-task scenario, calling queue_work() while drain_workqueue() will lead to a Call Trace as pushing a work on a draining workqueue is not permitted in spinlocked context. Call Trace: <TASK> ? __warn+0x7d/0x140 ? __queue_work+0x2b2/0x440 ? report_bug+0x1f8/0x200 ? handle_bug+0x3c/0x70 ? exc_invalid_op+0x18/0x70 ? asm_exc_invalid_op+0x1a/0x20 ? __queue_work+0x2b2/0x440 queue_work_on+0x28/0x30 idxd_misc_thread+0x303/0x5a0 [idxd] ? __schedule+0x369/0xb40 ? __pfx_irq_thread_fn+0x10/0x10 ? irq_thread+0xbc/0x1b0 irq_thread_fn+0x21/0x70 irq_thread+0x102/0x1b0 ? preempt_count_add+0x74/0xa0 ? __pfx_irq_thread_dtor+0x10/0x10 ? __pfx_irq_thread+0x10/0x10 kthread+0x103/0x140 ? __pfx_kthread+0x10/0x10 ret_from_fork+0x31/0x50 ? __pfx_kthread+0x10/0x10 ret_from_fork_asm+0x1b/0x30 </TASK> The current implementation uses a spinlock to protect event log workqueue and will lead to the Call Trace due to potential task rescheduling. To address the locking issue, convert the spinlock to mutex, allowing the drain_workqueue() to be called in a safe mutex-locked context. This change ensures proper synchronization when accessing the event log workqueue, preventing potential Call Trace and improving the overall robustness of the code.

Commit 5ec27ec735ba ("fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c: fix the default values of i_uid/i_gid on /proc/sys inodes.") added defaults for i_uid/i_gid when set_ownership() was not implemented. It also missed adjusting net_ctl_set_ownership() to use the same default values in case the computation of a better value failed.

spi: spi-zynq-qspi: Fix a NULL pointer dereference in zynq_qspi_exec_mem_op()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: spi: spi-zynq-qspi: Fix a NULL pointer dereference in zynq_qspi_exec_mem_op() In zynq_qspi_exec_mem_op(), kzalloc() is directly used in memset(), which could lead to a NULL pointer dereference on failure of kzalloc(). Fix this bug by adding a check of tmpbuf. This bug was found by a static analyzer. The analysis employs differential checking to identify inconsistent security operations (e.g., checks or kfrees) between two code paths and confirms that the inconsistent operations are not recovered in the current function or the callers, so they constitute bugs. Note that, as a bug found by static analysis, it can be a false positive or hard to trigger. Multiple researchers have cross-reviewed the bug. Builds with CONFIG_SPI_ZYNQ_QSPI=m show no new warnings, and our static analyzer no longer warns about this code.

Bluetooth: avoid deadlock between hci_dev->lock and socket lock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: avoid deadlock between hci_dev->lock and socket lock Commit eab2404ba798 ("Bluetooth: Add BT_PHY socket option") added a dependency between socket lock and hci_dev->lock that could lead to deadlock. It turns out that hci_conn_get_phy() is not in any way relying on hdev being immutable during the runtime of this function, neither does it even look at any of the members of hdev, and as such there is no need to hold that lock. veth: more robust handing of race to avoid txq getting stuck

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: veth: more robust handing of race to avoid txq getting stuck Commit dc82a33297fc ("veth: apply qdisc backpressure on full ptr_ring to reduce TX drops") introduced a race condition that can lead to a permanently stalled TXQ. This was observed in production on ARM64 systems (Ampere Altra Max). The race occurs in veth_xmit(). The producer observes a full ptr_ring and stops the queue (netif_tx_stop_queue()). The subsequent conditional logic, intended to re-wake the queue if the consumer had just emptied it (if (__ptr_ring_empty(...)) netif_tx_wake_queue()), can fail. This leads to a "lost wakeup" where the TXQ remains stopped (QUEUE_STATE_DRV_XOFF) and traffic halts. This failure is caused by an incorrect use of the __ptr_ring_empty() API from the producer side. As noted in kernel comments, this check is not guaranteed to be correct if a consumer is operating on another CPU. The empty test is based on ptr_ring->consumer_head, making it reliable only for the consumer. Using this check from the producer side is fundamentally racy. This patch fixes the race by adopting the more robust logic from an earlier version V4 of the patchset, which always flushed the peer: (1) In veth_xmit(), the racy conditional wake-up logic and its memory barrier are removed. Instead, after stopping the queue, we unconditionally call __veth_xdp_flush(rq). This guarantees that the NAPI consumer is scheduled, making it solely responsible for re-waking the TXQ. This handles the race where veth_poll() consumes all packets and completes NAPI *before* veth_xmit() on the producer side has called netif_tx_stop_queue. The __veth_xdp_flush(rq) will observe rx_notify_masked is false and schedule NAPI. (2) On the consumer side, the logic for waking the peer TXQ is moved out of veth_xdp_rcv() and placed at the end of the veth_poll() function. This placement is part of fixing the race, as the netif_tx_queue_stopped() check must occur after rx_notify_masked is potentially set to false during NAPI completion. This handles the race where veth_poll() consumes all packets, but haven't finished (rx_notify_masked is still true). The producer veth_xmit() stops the TXQ and __veth_xdp_flush(rq) will observe rx_notify_masked is true, meaning not starting NAPI. Then veth_poll() change rx_notify_masked to false and stops NAPI. Before exiting veth_poll() will observe TXQ is stopped and wake it up.

udf: Avoid using corrupted block bitmap buffer

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udf: Avoid using corrupted block bitmap buffer When the filesystem block bitmap is corrupted, we detect the corruption while loading the bitmap and fail the allocation with error. However the next allocation from the same bitmap will notice the bitmap buffer is already loaded and tries to allocate from the bitmap with mixed results (depending on the exact nature of the bitmap corruption). Fix the problem by using BH_verified bit to indicate whether the bitmap is valid or not.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: VMCI: Fix memcpy() run-time warning in dg_dispatch_as_host() Syzkaller hit 'WARNING in dg_dispatch_as_host' bug. memcpy: detected field-spanning write (size 56) of single field "&dg_info->msg" at drivers/misc/vmw_vmci/vmci_datagram.c:237 (size 24) WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 1555 at drivers/misc/vmw_vmci/vmci_datagram.c:237 dg_dispatch_as_host+0x88e/0xa60 drivers/misc/vmw_vmci/vmci_datagram.c:237 Some code commentry, based on my understanding: 544 #define VMCI_DG_SIZE(_dg) (VMCI_DG_HEADERSIZE + (size_t)(_dg)->payload_size) /// This is 24 + payload_size memcpy(&dg_info->msg, dg, dg_size); Destination = dg_info->msg ---> this is a 24 byte structure(struct vmci_datagram) Source = dg --> this is a 24 byte structure (struct vmci_datagram) Size = dg_size = 24 + payload_size {payload_size = 56-24 =32} -- Syzkaller managed to set payload_size to 32. 35 struct delayed_datagram_info { 36 struct datagram_entry *entry; 37 struct work_struct work; 38 bool in_dg_host_queue; 39 /* msg and msg_payload must be together. */ 40 struct vmci_datagram msg; 41 u8 msg_payload[]; 42 }; So those extra bytes of payload are copied into msg_payload[], a run time warning is seen while fuzzing with Syzkaller. One possible way to fix the warning is to split the memcpy() into two parts -- one -- direct assignment of msg and second taking care of payload. Gustavo quoted: "Under FORTIFY_SOURCE we should not copy data across multiple members in a structure."

i40e: Fix XDP program unloading while removing the driver

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: Fix XDP program unloading while removing the driver The commit 6533e558c650 ("i40e: Fix reset path while removing the driver") introduced a new PF state "__I40E_IN_REMOVE" to block modifying the XDP program while the driver is being removed. Unfortunately, such a change is useful only if the ".ndo_bpf()" callback was called out of the rmmod context because unloading the existing XDP program is also a part of driver removing procedure. In other words, from the rmmod context the driver is expected to unload the XDP program without reporting any errors. Otherwise, the kernel warning with callstack is printed out to dmesg. Example failing scenario: 1. Load the i40e driver. 2. Load the XDP program. 3. Unload the i40e driver (using "rmmod" command). The example kernel warning log: [ +0.004646] WARNING: CPU: 94 PID: 10395 at net/core/dev.c:9290 unregister_netdevice_many_notify+0x7a9/0x870 [...] [ +0.010959] RIP: 0010:unregister_netdevice_many_notify+0x7a9/0x870 [...] [ +0.002726] Call Trace: [ +0.002457] <TASK> [ +0.002119] ? __warn+0x80/0x120 [ +0.003245] ? unregister_netdevice_many_notify+0x7a9/0x870 [ +0.005586] ? report_bug+0x164/0x190 [ +0.003678] ? handle_bug+0x3c/0x80 [ +0.003503] ? exc_invalid_op+0x17/0x70 [ +0.003846] ? asm_exc_invalid_op+0x1a/0x20 [ +0.004200] ? unregister_netdevice_many_notify+0x7a9/0x870 [ +0.005579] ? unregister_netdevice_many_notify+0x3cc/0x870 [ +0.005586] unregister_netdevice_queue+0xf7/0x140 [ +0.004806] unregister_netdev+0x1c/0x30 [ +0.003933] i40e_vsi_release+0x87/0x2f0 [i40e] [ +0.004604] i40e_remove+0x1a1/0x420 [i40e] [ +0.004220] pci_device_remove+0x3f/0xb0 [ +0.003943] device_release_driver_internal+0x19f/0x200 [ +0.005243] driver_detach+0x48/0x90 [ +0.003586] bus_remove_driver+0x6d/0xf0 [ +0.003939] pci_unregister_driver+0x2e/0xb0 [ +0.004278] i40e_exit_module+0x10/0x5f0 [i40e] [ +0.004570] __do_sys_delete_module.isra.0+0x197/0x310 [ +0.005153] do_syscall_64+0x85/0x170 [ +0.003684] ? syscall_exit_to_user_mode+0x69/0x220 [ +0.004886] ? do_syscall_64+0x95/0x170 [ +0.003851] ? exc_page_fault+0x7e/0x180 [ +0.003932] entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x71/0x79 [ +0.005064] RIP: 0033:0x7f59dc9347cb [ +0.003648] Code: 73 01 c3 48 8b 0d 65 16 0c 00 f7 d8 64 89 01 48 83 c8 ff c3 66 2e 0f 1f 84 00 00 00 00 00 90 f3 0f 1e fa b8 b0 00 00 00 0f 05 <48> 3d 01 f0 ff ff 73 01 c3 48 8b 0d 35 16 0c 00 f7 d8 64 89 01 48 [ +0.018753] RSP: 002b:00007ffffac99048 EFLAGS: 00000206 ORIG_RAX: 00000000000000b0 [ +0.007577] RAX: ffffffffffffffda RBX: 0000559b9bb2f6e0 RCX: 00007f59dc9347cb [ +0.007140] RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: 0000000000000800 RDI: 0000559b9bb2f748 [ +0.007146] RBP: 00007ffffac99070 R08: 1999999999999999 R09: 0000000000000000 [ +0.007133] R10: 00007f59dc9a5ac0 R11: 0000000000000206 R12: 0000000000000000 [ +0.007141] R13: 00007ffffac992d8 R14: 0000559b9bb2f6e0 R15: 0000000000000000 [ +0.007151] </TASK> [ +0.002204] ---[ end trace 0000000000000000 ]--- Fix this by checking if the XDP program is being loaded or unloaded. gro: fix ownership transfer

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gro: fix ownership transfer If packets are GROed with fraglist they might be segmented later on and continue their journey in the stack. In skb_segment_list those skbs can be reused as-is. This is an issue as their destructor was removed in skb_gro_receive_list but not the reference to their socket, and then they can't be orphaned. Fix this by also removing the reference to the socket. For example this could be observed, kernel BUG at include/linux/skbuff.h:3131! net: sxgbe: fix potential NULL dereference in sxgbe_rx()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: sxgbe: fix potential NULL dereference in sxgbe_rx() Currently, when skb is null, the driver prints an error and then dereferences skb on the next line. To fix this, let's add a 'break' after the error message to switch to sxgbe_rx_refill(), which is similar to the approach taken by the other drivers in this particular case, e.g. calxeda with xgmac_rx(). In addition, if two vmas map to the same PTE page, there is no need to hold the pte lock again, otherwise a deadlock will occur. Just add the need_lock parameter to let adjust_pte() know this information.

There have been many inconsistencies in the file system data. In the case of file system data inconsistency, for example, if the block bitmap of a referenced block is not set, it can lead to the situation where a block being committed is allocated and used again. As a result, the following condition will not be satisfied then trigger BUG_ON. Of course, it is entirely possible to construct a problematic image that can trigger this BUG_ON through specific operations. In fact, I have constructed such an image and easily reproduced this issue. Therefore, J_ASSERT() holds true only under ideal conditions, but it may not necessarily be satisfied in exceptional scenarios. Using J_ASSERT() directly in abnormal situations would cause the system to crash, which is clearly not what we want. So here we directly trigger a JBD abort instead of immediately invoking BUG_ON.

RDMA/mlx5: Fix mlx5_poll_one() cur_qp update flow

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/mlx5: Fix mlx5_poll_one() cur_qp update flow When cur_qp isn't NULL, in order to avoid fetching the QP from the radix tree again we check if the next cqe QP is identical to the one we already have. The bug however is that we are checking if the QP is identical by checking the QP number inside the CQE against the QP number inside the mlx5_ib_qp, but that's wrong since the QP number from the CQE is from FW so it should be matched against mlx5_core_qp which is our FW QP number. Otherwise we could use the wrong QP when handling a CQE which could cause the kernel trace below. This issue is mainly noticeable over QPs 0 & 1, since for now they are the only QPs in our driver whereas the QP number inside mlx5_ib_qp doesn't match the QP number inside mlx5_core_qp. net: hamradio: fix memory leak in mkiss_close

wifi: brcmfmac: Fix use-after-free bug in brcmf_cfg80211_detach

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: brcmfmac: Fix use-after-free bug in brcmf_cfg80211_detach This is the candidate patch of CVE-2023-47233 : https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-47233 In brcm80211 driver,it starts with the following invoking chain to start init a timeout worker: ->brcmf_usb_probe ->brcmf_usb_probe_cb ->brcmf_attach ->brcmf_bus_started ->brcmf_cfg80211_attach ->wl_init_priv ->brcmf_init_escan ->INIT_WORK(&cfg->escan_timeout_work, brcmf_cfg80211_escan_timeout_worker); If we disconnect the USB by hotplug, it will call brcmf_usb_disconnect to make cleanup. The invoking chain is : brcmf_usb_disconnect ->brcmf_usb_disconnect_cb ->brcmf_detach ->brcmf_cfg80211_detach ->kfree(cfg); While the timeout woker may still be running. This will cause a use-after-free bug on cfg in brcmf_cfg80211_escan_timeout_worker. Fix it by deleting the timer and canceling the worker in brcmf_cfg80211_detach. [arend.vanspriel@broadcom.com: keep timer delete as is and cancel work just before free]

If the mptcp worker (dumbly) tries mptcp-level re-injection after such ack, that would unconditionally trigger a send buffer cleanup using 'bad' snd_una values. We could easily disable re-injection for fallback sockets, but such dumb behavior already helped catching a few subtle issues and a very low to zero impact in practice. Instead address the issue always initializing snd_nxt (and write_seq, for consistency) at connect time.

arm64: entry: always set GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET during entry

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: arm64: entry: always set GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET during entry Zenghui reports that booting a kernel with "irqchip.gicv3_pseudo_nmi=1" on the command line hits a warning during kernel entry, due to the way we manipulate the PMR. Early in the entry sequence, we call lockdep_hardirqs_off() to inform lockdep that interrupts have been masked (as the HW sets DAIF wqhen entering an exception). Architecturally PMR_EL1 is not affected by exception entry, and we don't set GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET in the PMR early in the exception entry sequence, so early in exception entry the PMR can indicate that interrupts are unmasked even though they are masked by DAIF. If DEBUG_LOCKDEP is selected, lockdep_hardirqs_off() will check that interrupts are masked, before we set GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET in any of the exception entry paths, and hence lockdep_hardirqs_off() will WARN() that something is amiss. We can avoid this by consistently setting GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET during exception entry so that kernel code sees a consistent environment. We must also update local_daif_inherit() to undo this, as currently only touches DAIF. For other paths, local_daif_restore() will update both DAIF and the PMR. With this done, we can remove the existing special cases which set this later in the entry code. We always use (GIC_PRIO_IRQON | GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET) for consistency with local_daif_save(), as this will warn if it ever encounters (GIC_PRIO_IRQOFF | GIC_PRIO_PSR_I_SET), and never sets this itself. This matches the gic_prio_kentry_setup that we have to retain for ret_to_user. The original splat from Zenghui's report was: | DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON(!irqs_disabled()) | WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 125 at kernel/locking/lockdep.c:4258 lockdep_hardirqs_off+0xd4/0xe8 | Modules linked in: | CPU: 3 PID: 125 Comm: modprobe Tainted: G W 5.12.0-rc8+ #463 | Hardware name: QEMU KVM Virtual Machine, BIOS 0.0.0 02/06/2015 | pstate: 604003c5 (nZCv DAIF +PAN -UAO -TCO BTYPE=--) | pc : lockdep_hardirqs_off+0xd4/0xe8 | lr : lockdep_hardirqs_off+0xd4/0xe8 | sp : ffff80002a39bad0 | pmr_save: 000000e0 | x29: ffff80002a39bad0 x28: ffff0000de214bc0 | x27: ffff0000de1c0400 x26: 000000000049b328 | x25: 0000000000406f30 x24: ffff0000de1c00a0 | x23: 0000000020400005 x22: ffff8000105f747c | x21: 0000000096000044 x20: 0000000000498ef9 | x19: ffff80002a39bc88 x18: ffffffffffffffff | x17: 0000000000000000 x16: ffff800011c61eb0 | x15: ffff800011700a88 x14: 0720072007200720 | x13: 0720072007200720 x12: 0720072007200720 | x11: 0720072007200720 x10: 0720072007200720 | x9 : ffff80002a39bad0 x8 : ffff80002a39bad0 | x7 : ffff8000119f0800 x6 : c0000000ffff7fff | x5 : ffff8000119f07a8 x4 : 0000000000000001 | x3 : 9bcdab23f2432800 x2 : ffff800011730538 | x1 : 9bcdab23f2432800 x0 : 0000000000000000 | Call trace: | lockdep_hardirqs_off+0xd4/0xe8 | enter_from_kernel_mode.isra.5+0x7c/0xa8 | el1_abort+0x24/0x100 | el1_sync_handler+0x80/0xd0 | el1_sync+0x6c/0x100 | __arch_clear_user+0xc/0x90 | load_elf_binary+0x9fc/0x1450 | bprm_execve+0x404/0x880 | kernel_execve+0x180/0x188 | call_usermodehelper_exec_async+0xdc/0x158 | ret_from_fork+0x10/0x18

A use-after-free flaw was found in the add_partition in block/partitions/core.c in the Linux kernel. A local attacker with user privileges could cause a denial of service on the system. The issue results from the lack of code cleanup when device_add call fails when adding a partition to the disk.

nvmet-rdma: Fix NULL deref when SEND is completed with error

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvmet-rdma: Fix NULL deref when SEND is completed with error When running some traffic and taking down the link on peer, a retry counter exceeded error is received. This leads to nvmet_rdma_error_comp which tried accessing the cq_context to obtain the queue. The cq_context is no longer valid after the fix to use shared CQ mechanism and should be obtained similar to how it is obtained in other functions from the wc->qp. We can't sleep in netpoll, it has interrupts disabled completely. Strangely, gem_poll_controller() doesn't even poll the completions, and instead acts as if an interrupt has fired so it just schedules NAPI and exits. None of this has been necessary for years, since netpoll invokes NAPI directly.

lib/test_hmm.c: handle src_pfns and dst_pfns allocation failure

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: lib/test_hmm.c: handle src_pfns and dst_pfns allocation failure The kcalloc() in dmirror_device_evict_chunk() will return null if the physical memory has run out. As a result, if src_pfns or dst_pfns is dereferenced, the null pointer dereference bug will happen. Moreover, the device is going away. If the kcalloc() fails, the pages mapping a chunk could not be evicted. So add a __GFP_NOFAIL flag in kcalloc(). Finally, as there is no need to have physically contiguous memory, Switch kcalloc() to kvcalloc() in order to avoid failing allocations.

ARM: 9063/1: mm: reduce maximum number of CPUs if DEBUG_KMAP_LOCAL is enabled

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ARM: 9063/1: mm: reduce maximum number of CPUs if DEBUG_KMAP_LOCAL is enabled The debugging code for kmap_local() doubles the number of per-CPU fixmap slots allocated for kmap_local(), in order to use half of them as guard regions. This causes the fixmap region to grow downwards beyond the start of its reserved window if the supported number of CPUs is large, and collide with the newly added virtual DT mapping right below it, which is obviously not good. One manifestation of this is EFI boot on a kernel built with NR_CPUS=32 and CONFIG_DEBUG_KMAP_LOCAL=y, which may pass the FDT in highmem, resulting in block entries below the fixmap region that the fixmap code misidentifies as fixmap table entries, and subsequently tries to dereference using a phys-to-virt translation that is only valid for lowmem. This results in a cryptic splat such as the one below. ftrace: allocating 45548 entries in 89 pages 8<--- cut here --- Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address fc6006f0 pgd = (ptrval) [fc6006f0] *pgd=80000040207003, *pmd=00000000 Internal error: Oops: a06 [#1] SMP ARM Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 0 Comm: swapper Not tainted 5.11.0+ #382 Hardware name: Generic DT based system PC is at cpu_ca15_set_pte_ext+0x24/0x30 LR is at __set_fixmap+0xe4/0x118 pc : [<c041ac9c>] lr : [<c04189d8>] psr: 400000d3 sp : c1601ed8 ip : 00400000 fp : 00800000 r10: 0000071f r9 : 00421000 r8 : 00c00000 r7 : 00c00000 r6 : 0000071f r5 : ffade000 r4 : 4040171f r3 : 00c00000 r2 : 4040171f r1 : c041ac78 r0 : fc6006f0 Flags: nZcv IRQs off FIQs off Mode SVC_32 ISA ARM Segment none Control: 30c5387d Table: 40203000 DAC: 00000001 Process swapper (pid: 0, stack limit = 0x(ptrval)) So let's limit CONFIG_NR_CPUS to 16 when CONFIG_DEBUG_KMAP_LOCAL=y. mm: memcontrol: slab: fix obtain a reference to a freeing memcg

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm: memcontrol: slab: fix obtain a reference to a freeing memcg Patch series "Use obj_cgroup APIs to charge kmem pages", v5. Since Roman's series "The new cgroup slab memory controller" applied. All slab objects are charged with the new APIs of obj_cgroup. The new APIs introduce a struct obj_cgroup to charge slab objects. It prevents long-living objects from pinning the original memory cgroup in the memory. But there are still some corner objects (e.g. allocations larger than order-1 page on SLUB) which are not charged with the new APIs. Those objects (include the pages which are allocated from buddy allocator directly) are charged as kmem pages which still hold a reference to the memory cgroup. E.g. We know that the kernel stack is charged as kmem pages because the size of the kernel stack can be greater than 2 pages (e.g. 16KB on x86_64 or arm64). If we create a thread (suppose the thread stack is charged to memory cgroup A) and then move it from memory cgroup A to memory cgroup B. Because the kernel stack of the thread hold a reference to the memory cgroup A. The thread can pin the memory cgroup A in the memory even if we remove the cgroup A. If we want to see this scenario by using the following script. We can see that the system has added 500 dying cgroups (This is not a real world issue, just a script to show that the large kmallocs are charged as kmem pages which can pin the memory cgroup in the memory). #!/bin/bash cat /proc/cgroups | grep memory cd /sys/fs/cgroup/memory echo 1 > memory.move_charge_at_immigrate for i in range{1..500} do mkdir kmem_test echo $$ > kmem_test/cgroup.procs sleep 3600 & echo $$ > cgroup.procs echo `cat kmem_test/cgroup.procs` > cgroup.procs rmdir kmem_test done cat /proc/cgroups | grep memory This patchset aims to make those kmem pages to drop the reference to memory cgroup by using the APIs of obj_cgroup. Finally, we can see that the number of the dying cgroups will not increase if we run the above test script. This patch (of 7): The rcu_read_lock/unlock only can guarantee that the memcg will not be freed, but it cannot guarantee the success of css_get (which is in the refill_stock when cached memcg changed) to memcg. rcu_read_lock() memcg = obj_cgroup_memcg(old) __memcg_kmem_uncharge(memcg) refill_stock(memcg) if (stock->cached != memcg) // css_get can change the ref counter from 0 back to 1. css_get(&memcg->css) rcu_read_unlock() This fix is very like the commit: eefbfa7fd678 ("mm: memcg/slab: fix use after free in obj_cgroup_charge") Fix this by holding a reference to the memcg which is passed to the __memcg_kmem_uncharge() before calling __memcg_kmem_uncharge().

bpf, lockdown, audit: Fix buggy SELinux lockdown permission checks

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf, lockdown, audit: Fix buggy SELinux lockdown permission checks Commit 59438b46471a ("security,lockdown,selinux: implement SELinux lockdown") added an implementation of the locked_down LSM hook to SELinux, with the aim to restrict which domains are allowed to perform operations that would breach lockdown. This is indirectly also getting audit subsystem involved to report events. The latter is problematic, as reported by Ondrej and Serhei, since it can bring down the whole system via audit: 1) The audit events that are triggered due to calls to security_locked_down() can OOM kill a machine, see below details [0]. 2) It also seems to be causing a deadlock via avc_has_perm()/slow_avc_audit() when trying to wake up kauditd, for example, when using trace_sched_switch() tracepoint, see details in [1]. Triggering this was not via some hypothetical corner case, but with existing tools like runqlat & runqslower from bcc, for example, which make use of this tracepoint. Rough call sequence goes like: rq_lock(rq) -> -------------------------+ trace_sched_switch() -> | bpf_prog_xyz() -> +-> deadlock selinux_lockdown() -> | audit_log_end() -> | wake_up_interruptible() -> | try_to_wake_up() -> | rq_lock(rq) --------------+ What's worse is that the intention of 59438b46471a to further restrict lockdown settings for specific applications in respect to the global lockdown policy is completely broken for BPF. The SELinux policy rule for the current lockdown check looks something like this: allow <who> <who> : lockdown { <reason> }; However, this doesn't match with the 'current' task where the security_locked_down() is executed, example: httpd does a syscall. There is a tracing program attached to the syscall which triggers a BPF program to run, which ends up doing a bpf_probe_read_kernel{,_str}() helper call. The selinux_lockdown() hook does the permission check against 'current', that is, httpd in this example. httpd has literally zero relation to this tracing program, and it would be nonsensical having to write an SELinux policy rule against httpd to let the tracing helper pass. The policy in this case needs to be against the entity that is installing the BPF program. For example, if bpftrace would generate a histogram of syscall counts by user space application: bpftrace -e 'tracepoint:raw_syscalls:sys_enter { @[comm] = count(); }' bpftrace would then go and generate a BPF program from this internally. One way of doing it [for the sake of the example] could be to call bpf_get_current_task() helper and then access current->comm via one of bpf_probe_read_kernel{,_str}() helpers. So the program itself has nothing to do with httpd or any other random app doing a syscall here. The BPF program _explicitly initiated_ the lockdown check. The allow/deny policy belongs in the context of bpftrace: meaning, you want to grant bpftrace access to use these helpers, but other tracers on the system like my_random_tracer _not_. Therefore fix all three issues at the same time by taking a completely different approach for the security_locked_down() hook, that is, move the check into the program verification phase where we actually retrieve the BPF func proto. This also reliably gets the task (current) that is trying to install the BPF tracing program, e.g. bpftrace/bcc/perf/systemtap/etc, and it also fixes the OOM since we're moving this out of the BPF helper's fast-path which can be called several millions of times per second. The check is then also in line with other security_locked_down() hooks in the system where the enforcement is performed at open/load time, for example, open_kcore() for /proc/kcore access or module_sig_check() for module signatures just to pick f ---truncated---
