Ollama Remote Denial of Service via Attacker-Controlled Allocation in GGUF Metadata Parser

Ollama (HEAD f0078ae) contains an uncontrolled memory allocation vulnerability in the GGUF metadata parser that allows remote attackers to crash the server by supplying a crafted GGUF file with attacker-controlled length and count fields in string lengths, tensor dimension counts, and metadata array counts that are used as allocation sizes without validation against remaining file size. Attackers can upload a sub-1KB crafted GGUF file via the blob upload and model create or pull API endpoints to trigger unrecoverable Go runtime out-of-memory fatal errors or makeslice panics that bypass recovery middleware and crash the entire server process.

Remote Code Execution in Ollama via Update Mechanism

Ollama for Windows contains a Remote Code Execution vulnerability in its update mechanism due to improper handling of attacker‑controlled HTTP response headers. When downloading updates, the application constructs local file paths using values derived from HTTP headers without validation. These values are passed directly to filepath.Join, allowing path traversal sequences (../) to be resolved and enabling files to be written outside the intended update staging directory. An attacker who can influence update responses can exploit this flaw to write arbitrary executables to attacker‑chosen locations accessible to the current user, including the Windows Startup directory. This allows execution of arbitrary executables. Critically, when chained with CVE‑2026‑42248 (Missing Signature Verification for Updates), an attacker can deliver malicious payloads that are written to sensitive locations and executed automatically. Because Ollama for Windows performs silent automatic updates and executes staged binaries without user interaction, this results in automatic and persistent code execution without user awareness. Maintainers of this project were notified early about this vulnerability, but didn't respond with the details of vulnerability or vulnerable version range. Versions from 0.12.10 to 0.17.5 were tested and confirmed as vulnerable, other versions were not tested but might also be vulnerable.

Ollama Multi-Modal Model Image Processing NULL Pointer Dereference

Ollama 0.11.5-rc0 through current version 0.13.5 contain a null pointer dereference vulnerability in the multi-modal model image processing functionality. When processing base64-encoded image data via the /api/chat endpoint, the application fails to validate that the decoded data represents valid media before passing it to the mtmd_helper_bitmap_init_from_buf function. This function can return NULL for malformed input, but the code does not check this return value before dereferencing the pointer in subsequent operations. A remote attacker can exploit this by sending specially crafted base64 image data that decodes to invalid media, causing a segmentation fault and crashing the runner process. This results in a denial of service condition where the model becomes unavailable to all users until the service is restarted.
