tracing: Make sure trace_printk() can output as soon as it can be used

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Make sure trace_printk() can output as soon as it can be used Currently trace_printk() can be used as soon as early_trace_init() is called from start_kernel(). But if a crash happens, and "ftrace_dump_on_oops" is set on the kernel command line, all you get will be: [ 0.456075] <idle>-0 0dN.2. 347519us : Unknown type 6 [ 0.456075] <idle>-0 0dN.2. 353141us : Unknown type 6 [ 0.456075] <idle>-0 0dN.2. 358684us : Unknown type 6 This is because the trace_printk() event (type 6) hasn't been registered yet. That gets done via an early_initcall(), which may be early, but not early enough. Instead of registering the trace_printk() event (and other ftrace events, which are not trace events) via an early_initcall(), have them registered at the same time that trace_printk() can be used. This way, if there is a crash before early_initcall(), then the trace_printk()s will actually be useful.

bus: fsl-mc: don't assume child devices are all fsl-mc devices

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bus: fsl-mc: don't assume child devices are all fsl-mc devices Changes in VFIO caused a pseudo-device to be created as child of fsl-mc devices causing a crash [1] when trying to bind a fsl-mc device to VFIO. ceph: blocklist the kclient when receiving corrupted snap trace

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ceph: blocklist the kclient when receiving corrupted snap trace When received corrupted snap trace we don't know what exactly has happened in MDS side. And we shouldn't continue IOs and metadatas access to MDS, which may corrupt or get incorrect contents. This patch will just block all the further IO/MDS requests immediately and then evict the kclient itself. The reason why we still need to evict the kclient just after blocking all the further IOs is that the MDS could revoke the caps faster.

bpf: Detect IP == ksym.end as part of BPF program

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Detect IP == ksym.end as part of BPF program Now that bpf_throw kfunc is the first such call instruction that has noreturn semantics within the verifier, this also kicks in dead code elimination in unprecedented ways. For one, any instruction following a bpf_throw call will never be marked as seen. Moreover, if a callchain ends up throwing, any instructions after the call instruction to the eventually throwing subprog in callers will also never be marked as seen. The tempting way to fix this would be to emit extra 'int3' instructions which bump the jited_len of a program, and ensure that during runtime when a program throws, we can discover its boundaries even if the call instruction to bpf_throw (or to subprogs that always throw) is emitted as the final instruction in the program. An example of such a program would be this: do_something(): ... r0 = 0 exit foo(): r1 = 0 call bpf_throw r0 = 0 exit bar(cond): if r1 != 0 goto pc+2 call do_something exit call foo r0 = 0 // Never seen by verifier exit // main(ctx): r1 = ... call bar r0 = 0 exit Here, if we do end up throwing, the stacktrace would be the following: bpf_throw foo bar main In bar, the final instruction emitted will be the call to foo, as such, the return address will be the subsequent instruction (which the JIT emits as int3 on x86). This will end up lying outside the jited_len of the program, thus, when unwinding, we will fail to discover the return address as belonging to any program and end up in a panic due to the unreliable stack unwinding of BPF programs that we never expect. To remedy this case, make bpf_prog_ksym_find treat IP == ksym.end as part of the BPF program, so that is_bpf_text_address returns true when such a case occurs, and we are able to unwind reliably when the final instruction ends up being a call instruction.

soc: qcom: pdr: Fix the potential deadlock

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: soc: qcom: pdr: Fix the potential deadlock When some client process A call pdr_add_lookup() to add the look up for the service and does schedule locator work, later a process B got a new server packet indicating locator is up and call pdr_locator_new_server() which eventually sets pdr->locator_init_complete to true which process A sees and takes list lock and queries domain list but it will timeout due to deadlock as the response will queued to the same qmi->wq and it is ordered workqueue and process B is not able to complete new server request work due to deadlock on list lock. Fix it by removing the unnecessary list iteration as the list iteration is already being done inside locator work, so avoid it here and just call schedule_work() here. Process A Process B process_scheduled_works() pdr_add_lookup() qmi_data_ready_work() process_scheduled_works() pdr_locator_new_server() pdr->locator_init_complete=true; pdr_locator_work() mutex_lock(&pdr->list_lock); pdr_locate_service() mutex_lock(&pdr->list_lock); pdr_get_domain_list() pr_err("PDR: %s get domain list txn wait failed: %d\n", req->service_name, ret); Timeout error log due to deadlock: " PDR: tms/servreg get domain list txn wait failed: -110 PDR: service lookup for msm/adsp/sensor_pd:tms/servreg failed: -110 " Thanks to Bjorn and Johan for letting me know that this commit also fixes an audio regression when using the in-kernel pd-mapper as that makes it easier to hit this race. mm/migrate: fix shmem xarray update during migration

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/migrate: fix shmem xarray update during migration A shmem folio can be either in page cache or in swap cache, but not at the same time. Namely, once it is in swap cache, folio->mapping should be NULL, and the folio is no longer in a shmem mapping. In __folio_migrate_mapping(), to determine the number of xarray entries to update, folio_test_swapbacked() is used, but that conflates shmem in page cache case and shmem in swap cache case. It leads to xarray multi-index entry corruption, since it turns a sibling entry to a normal entry during xas_store() (see [1] for a userspace reproduction). Fix it by only using folio_test_swapcache() to determine whether xarray is storing swap cache entries or not to choose the right number of xarray entries to update. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/Z8idPCkaJW1IChjT@casper.infradead.org/ Note: In __split_huge_page(), folio_test_anon() && folio_test_swapcache() is used to get swap_cache address space, but that ignores the shmem folio in swap cache case. It could lead to NULL pointer dereferencing when a in-swap-cache shmem folio is split at __xa_store(), since !folio_test_anon() is true and folio->mapping is NULL. But fortunately, its caller split_huge_page_to_list_to_order() bails out early with EBUSY when folio->mapping is NULL. So no need to take care of it here.

sctp: check send stream number after wait_for_sndbuf

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sctp: check send stream number after wait_for_sndbuf This patch fixes a corner case where the asoc out stream count may change after wait_for_sndbuf. When the main thread in the client starts a connection, if its out stream count is set to N while the in stream count in the server is set to N - 2, another thread in the client keeps sending the msgs with stream number N - 1, and waits for sndbuf before processing INIT_ACK. However, after processing INIT_ACK, the out stream count in the client is shrunk to N - 2, the same to the in stream count in the server. The crash occurs when the thread waiting for sndbuf is awake and sends the msg in a non-existing stream(N - 1), the call trace is as below: KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000038-0x000000000000003f] Call Trace: <TASK> sctp_cmd_send_msg net/sctp/sm_sideeffect.c:1114 [inline] sctp_cmd_interpreter net/sctp/sm_sideeffect.c:1777 [inline] sctp_side_effects net/sctp/sm_sideeffect.c:1199 [inline] sctp_do_sm+0x197d/0x5310 net/sctp/sm_sideeffect.c:1170 sctp_primitive_SEND+0x9f/0xc0 net/sctp/primitive.c:163 sctp_sendmsg_to_asoc+0x10eb/0x1a30 net/sctp/socket.c:1868 sctp_sendmsg+0x8d4/0x1d90 net/sctp/socket.c:2026 inet_sendmsg+0x9d/0xe0 net/ipv4/af_inet.c:825 sock_sendmsg_nosec net/socket.c:722 [inline] sock_sendmsg+0xde/0x190 net/socket.c:745 The fix is to add an unlikely check for the send stream number after the thread wakes up from the wait_for_sndbuf.

netfilter: ipset: Rework long task execution when adding/deleting entries

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: ipset: Rework long task execution when adding/deleting entries When adding/deleting large number of elements in one step in ipset, it can take a reasonable amount of time and can result in soft lockup errors. The patch 5f7b51bf09ba ("netfilter: ipset: Limit the maximal range of consecutive elements to add/delete") tried to fix it by limiting the max elements to process at all. However it was not enough, it is still possible that we get hung tasks. Lowering the limit is not reasonable, so the approach in this patch is as follows: rely on the method used at resizing sets and save the state when we reach a smaller internal batch limit, unlock/lock and proceed from the saved state. Thus we can avoid long continuous tasks and at the same time removed the limit to add/delete large number of elements in one step. The nfnl mutex is held during the whole operation which prevents one to issue other ipset commands in parallel.

ext4: Fix function prototype mismatch for ext4_feat_ktype

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext4: Fix function prototype mismatch for ext4_feat_ktype With clang's kernel control flow integrity (kCFI, CONFIG_CFI_CLANG), indirect call targets are validated against the expected function pointer prototype to make sure the call target is valid to help mitigate ROP attacks. If they are not identical, there is a failure at run time, which manifests as either a kernel panic or thread getting killed. ext4_feat_ktype was setting the "release" handler to "kfree", which doesn't have a matching function prototype. Add a simple wrapper with the correct prototype. This was found as a result of Clang's new -Wcast-function-type-strict flag, which is more sensitive than the simpler -Wcast-function-type, which only checks for type width mismatches. Note that this code is only reached when ext4 is a loadable module and it is being unloaded: CFI failure at kobject_put+0xbb/0x1b0 (target: kfree+0x0/0x180; expected type: 0x7c4aa698) ... io_uring: wait interruptibly for request completions on exit

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: io_uring: wait interruptibly for request completions on exit WHen the ring exits, cleanup is done and the final cancelation and waiting on completions is done by io_ring_exit_work. That function is invoked by kworker, which doesn't take any signals. Because of that, it doesn't really matter if we wait for completions in TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE or TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE state. However, it does matter to the hung task detection checker! Normally we expect cancelations and completions to happen rather quickly. Some test cases, however, will exit the ring and park the owning task stopped (eg via SIGSTOP). If the owning task needs to run task_work to complete requests, then io_ring_exit_work won't make any progress until the task is runnable again. Hence io_ring_exit_work can trigger the hung task detection, which is particularly problematic if panic-on-hung-task is enabled. As the ring exit doesn't take signals to begin with, have it wait interruptibly rather than uninterruptibly. io_uring has a separate stuck-exit warning that triggers independently anyway, so we're not really missing anything by making this switch.

e1000/e1000e: Fix leak in DMA error cleanup

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: e1000/e1000e: Fix leak in DMA error cleanup If an error is encountered while mapping TX buffers, the driver should unmap any buffers already mapped for that skb. Because count is incremented after a successful mapping, it will always match the correct number of unmappings needed when dma_error is reached. Decrementing count before the while loop in dma_error causes an off-by-one error. If any mapping was successful before an unsuccessful mapping, exactly one DMA mapping would leak. In these commits, a faulty while condition caused an infinite loop in dma_error: Commit 03b1320dfcee ("e1000e: remove use of skb_dma_map from e1000e driver") Commit 602c0554d7b0 ("e1000: remove use of skb_dma_map from e1000 driver") Commit c1fa347f20f1 ("e1000/e1000e/igb/igbvf/ixgb/ixgbe: Fix tests of unsigned in *_tx_map()") fixed the infinite loop, but introduced the off-by-one error. This issue may still exist in the igbvf driver, but I did not address it in this patch.

raw: Fix NULL deref in raw_get_next().

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: raw: Fix NULL deref in raw_get_next(). Dae R. Jeong reported a NULL deref in raw_get_next() [0]. It seems that the repro was running these sequences in parallel so that one thread was iterating on a socket that was being freed in another netns. unshare(0x40060200) r0 = syz_open_procfs(0x0, &(0x7f0000002080)='net/raw\x00') socket$inet_icmp_raw(0x2, 0x3, 0x1) pread64(r0, &(0x7f0000000000)=""/10, 0xa, 0x10000000007f) After commit 0daf07e52709 ("raw: convert raw sockets to RCU"), we use RCU and hlist_nulls_for_each_entry() to iterate over SOCK_RAW sockets. However, we should use spinlock for slow paths to avoid the NULL deref. Also, SOCK_RAW does not use SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU, and the slab object is not reused during iteration in the grace period. In fact, the lockless readers do not check the nulls marker with get_nulls_value(). So, SOCK_RAW should use hlist instead of hlist_nulls. Instead of adding an unnecessary barrier by sk_nulls_for_each_rcu(), let's convert hlist_nulls to hlist and use sk_for_each_rcu() for fast paths and sk_for_each() and spinlock for /proc/net/raw. nvmem: core: fix cleanup after dev_set_name()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvmem: core: fix cleanup after dev_set_name() If dev_set_name() fails, we leak nvmem->wp_gpio as the cleanup does not put this. While a minimal fix for this would be to add the gpiod_put() call, we can do better if we split device_register(), and use the tested nvmem_release() cleanup code by initialising the device early, and putting the device. This results in a slightly larger fix, but results in clear code. Note: this patch depends on "nvmem: core: initialise nvmem->id early" and "nvmem: core: remove nvmem_config wp_gpio". [Srini: Fixed subject line and error code handing with wp_gpio while applying.]

atl1c: Work around the DMA RX overflow issue

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: atl1c: Work around the DMA RX overflow issue This is based on alx driver commit 881d0327db37 ("net: alx: Work around the DMA RX overflow issue"). The alx and atl1c drivers had RX overflow error which was why a custom allocator was created to avoid certain addresses. The simpler workaround then created for alx driver, but not for atl1c due to lack of tester. Instead of using a custom allocator, check the allocated skb address and use skb_reserve() to move away from problematic 0x...fc0 address. Tested on AR8131 on Acer 4540.

netfilter: nf_tables: don't skip expired elements during walk

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_tables: don't skip expired elements during walk There is an asymmetry between commit/abort and preparation phase if the following conditions are met: 1. set is a verdict map ("1.2.3.4 : jump foo") 2. timeouts are enabled In this case, following sequence is problematic: 1. element E in set S refers to chain C 2. userspace requests removal of set S 3. kernel does a set walk to decrement chain->use count for all elements from preparation phase 4. kernel does another set walk to remove elements from the commit phase (or another walk to do a chain->use increment for all elements from abort phase) If E has already expired in 1), it will be ignored during list walk, so its use count won't have been changed. Then, when set is culled, ->destroy callback will zap the element via nf_tables_set_elem_destroy(), but this function is only safe for elements that have been deactivated earlier from the preparation phase: lack of earlier deactivate removes the element but leaks the chain use count, which results in a WARN splat when the chain gets removed later, plus a leak of the nft_chain structure. Update pipapo_get() not to skip expired elements, otherwise flush command reports bogus ENOENT errors.

powercap: arm_scmi: Remove recursion while parsing zones

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: powercap: arm_scmi: Remove recursion while parsing zones Powercap zones can be defined as arranged in a hierarchy of trees and when registering a zone with powercap_register_zone(), the kernel powercap subsystem expects this to happen starting from the root zones down to the leaves; on the other side, de-registration by powercap_deregister_zone() must begin from the leaf zones. Available SCMI powercap zones are retrieved dynamically from the platform at probe time and, while any defined hierarchy between the zones is described properly in the zones descriptor, the platform returns the availables zones with no particular well-defined order: as a consequence, the trees possibly composing the hierarchy of zones have to be somehow walked properly to register the retrieved zones from the root. Currently the ARM SCMI Powercap driver walks the zones using a recursive algorithm; this approach, even though correct and tested can lead to kernel stack overflow when processing a returned hierarchy of zones composed by particularly high trees. Avoid possible kernel stack overflow by substituting the recursive approach with an iterative one supported by a dynamically allocated stack-like data structure.

net: can: j1939: enhanced error handling for tightly received RTS messages in xtp_rx_rts_session_new

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: can: j1939: enhanced error handling for tightly received RTS messages in xtp_rx_rts_session_new This patch enhances error handling in scenarios with RTS (Request to Send) messages arriving closely. It replaces the less informative WARN_ON_ONCE backtraces with a new error handling method. This provides clearer error messages and allows for the early termination of problematic sessions. Previously, sessions were only released at the end of j1939_xtp_rx_rts(). Potentially this could be reproduced with something like: testj1939 -r vcan0:0x80 & while true; do # send first RTS cansend vcan0 18EC8090#1014000303002301; # send second RTS cansend vcan0 18EC8090#1014000303002301; # send abort cansend vcan0 18EC8090#ff00000000002301; done

drm/sched: Check scheduler work queue before calling timeout handling

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/sched: Check scheduler work queue before calling timeout handling During an IGT GPU reset test we see again oops despite of commit 0c8c901aaaebc9 (drm/sched: Check scheduler ready before calling timeout handling). It uses ready condition whether to call drm_sched_fault which unwind the TDR leads to GPU reset. However it looks the ready condition is overloaded with other meanings, for example, for the following stack is related GPU reset : 0 gfx_v9_0_cp_gfx_start 1 gfx_v9_0_cp_gfx_resume 2 gfx_v9_0_cp_resume 3 gfx_v9_0_hw_init 4 gfx_v9_0_resume 5 amdgpu_device_ip_resume_phase2 does the following: /* start the ring */ gfx_v9_0_cp_gfx_start(adev); ring->sched.ready = true; The same approach is for other ASICs as well : gfx_v8_0_cp_gfx_resume gfx_v10_0_kiq_resume, etc... As a result, our GPU reset test causes GPU fault which calls unconditionally gfx_v9_0_fault and then drm_sched_fault. However now it depends on whether the interrupt service routine drm_sched_fault is executed after gfx_v9_0_cp_gfx_start is completed which sets the ready field of the scheduler to true even for uninitialized schedulers and causes oops vs no fault or when ISR drm_sched_fault is completed prior gfx_v9_0_cp_gfx_start and NULL pointer dereference does not occur. Use the field timeout_wq to prevent oops for uninitialized schedulers. The field could be initialized by the work queue of resetting the domain. v1: Corrections to commit message (Luben)

usb: gadget: u_audio: don't let userspace block driver unbind

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: u_audio: don't let userspace block driver unbind In the unbind callback for f_uac1 and f_uac2, a call to snd_card_free() via g_audio_cleanup() will disconnect the card and then wait for all resources to be released, which happens when the refcount falls to zero. Since userspace can keep the refcount incremented by not closing the relevant file descriptor, the call to unbind may block indefinitely. This can cause a deadlock during reboot, as evidenced by the following blocked task observed on my machine: task:reboot state:D stack:0 pid:2827 ppid:569 flags:0x0000000c Call trace: __switch_to+0xc8/0x140 __schedule+0x2f0/0x7c0 schedule+0x60/0xd0 schedule_timeout+0x180/0x1d4 wait_for_completion+0x78/0x180 snd_card_free+0x90/0xa0 g_audio_cleanup+0x2c/0x64 afunc_unbind+0x28/0x60 ... kernel_restart+0x4c/0xac __do_sys_reboot+0xcc/0x1ec __arm64_sys_reboot+0x28/0x30 invoke_syscall+0x4c/0x110 ... The issue can also be observed by opening the card with arecord and then stopping the process through the shell before unbinding: # arecord -D hw:UAC2Gadget -f S32_LE -c 2 -r 48000 /dev/null Recording WAVE '/dev/null' : Signed 32 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Stereo ^Z[1]+ Stopped arecord -D hw:UAC2Gadget -f S32_LE -c 2 -r 48000 /dev/null # echo gadget.0 > /sys/bus/gadget/drivers/configfs-gadget/unbind (observe that the unbind command never finishes) Fix the problem by using snd_card_free_when_closed() instead, which will still disconnect the card as desired, but defer the task of freeing the resources to the core once userspace closes its file descriptor.

USB: dwc3: fix memory leak with using debugfs_lookup()

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: dwc3: fix memory leak with using debugfs_lookup() When calling debugfs_lookup() the result must have dput() called on it, otherwise the memory will leak over time. To make things simpler, just call debugfs_lookup_and_remove() instead which handles all of the logic at once. Note, the root dentry for the debugfs directory for the device needs to be saved so we don't have to keep looking it up, which required a bit more refactoring to properly create and remove it when needed.

md/raid10: fix null-ptr-deref of mreplace in raid10_sync_request

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: md/raid10: fix null-ptr-deref of mreplace in raid10_sync_request There are two check of 'mreplace' in raid10_sync_request(). In the first check, 'need_replace' will be set and 'mreplace' will be used later if no-Faulty 'mreplace' exists, In the second check, 'mreplace' will be set to NULL if it is Faulty, but 'need_replace' will not be changed accordingly. null-ptr-deref occurs if Faulty is set between two check. Fix it by merging two checks into one. And replace 'need_replace' with 'mreplace' because their values are always the same.

ntfs3: fix circular locking dependency in run_unpack_ex

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs3: fix circular locking dependency in run_unpack_ex Syzbot reported a circular locking dependency between wnd->rw_lock (sbi->used.bitmap) and ni->file.run_lock. The deadlock scenario: 1. ntfs_extend_mft() takes ni->file.run_lock then wnd->rw_lock. 2. run_unpack_ex() takes wnd->rw_lock then tries to acquire ni->file.run_lock inside ntfs_refresh_zone(). This creates an AB-BA deadlock. Fix this by using down_read_trylock() instead of down_read() when acquiring run_lock in run_unpack_ex(). If the lock is contended, skip ntfs_refresh_zone() - the MFT zone will be refreshed on the next MFT operation. This breaks the circular dependency since we never block waiting for run_lock while holding wnd->rw_lock.

ibmvnic: Do not reset dql stats on NON_FATAL err

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ibmvnic: Do not reset dql stats on NON_FATAL err All ibmvnic resets, make a call to netdev_tx_reset_queue() when re-opening the device. netdev_tx_reset_queue() resets the num_queued and num_completed byte counters. These stats are used in Byte Queue Limit (BQL) algorithms. The difference between these two stats tracks the number of bytes currently sitting on the physical NIC. ibmvnic increases the number of queued bytes though calls to netdev_tx_sent_queue() in the drivers xmit function. When, VIOS reports that it is done transmitting bytes, the ibmvnic device increases the number of completed bytes through calls to netdev_tx_completed_queue(). It is important to note that the driver batches its transmit calls and num_queued is increased every time that an skb is added to the next batch, not necessarily when the batch is sent to VIOS for transmission. Unlike other reset types, a NON FATAL reset will not flush the sub crq tx buffers. Therefore, it is possible for the batched skb array to be partially full. So if there is call to netdev_tx_reset_queue() when re-opening the device, the value of num_queued (0) would not account for the skb's that are currently batched. Eventually, when the batch is sent to VIOS, the call to netdev_tx_completed_queue() would increase num_completed to a value greater than the num_queued. This causes a BUG_ON crash: ibmvnic 30000002: Firmware reports error, cause: adapter problem. Starting recovery... ibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600 ibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600 ibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600 ibmvnic 30000002: tx error 600 ------------[ cut here ]------------ kernel BUG at lib/dynamic_queue_limits.c:27!
