Junos OS: EX4000: A high volume of traffic destined to the device leads to a crash and restart

An Incorrect Initialization of Resource vulnerability in the Internal Device Manager (IDM) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on EX4000 models allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). On EX4000 models with 48 ports (EX4000-48T, EX4000-48P, EX4000-48MP) a high volume of traffic destined to the device will cause an FXPC crash and restart, which leads to a complete service outage until the device has automatically restarted. The following reboot reason can be seen in the output of 'show chassis routing-engine' and as a log message:   reason=0x4000002 reason_string=0x4000002:watchdog + panic with core dump This issue affects Junos OS on EX4000-48T, EX4000-48P and EX4000-48MP: * 24.4 versions before 24.4R2, * 25.2 versions before 25.2R1-S2, 25.2R2. This issue does not affect versions before 24.4R1 as the first Junos OS version for the EX4000 models was 24.4R1.

Junos OS Evolved: TCP session state is not always cleared on the Routing Engine leading to DoS

An Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling vulnerability in the kernel of Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated, network based attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS). In specific cases the state of TCP sessions that are terminated is not cleared, which over time leads to an exhaustion of resources, preventing new connections to the control plane from being established. A continuously increasing number of connections shown by: user@host > show system connections is indicative of the problem. To recover the respective RE needs to be restarted manually. This issue only affects IPv4 but does not affect IPv6. This issue only affects TCP sessions established in-band (over an interface on an FPC) but not out-of-band (over the management ethernet port on the routing-engine). This issue affects Junos OS Evolved:  * All versions before 21.4R3-S9-EVO, * 22.2 versions before 22.2R3-S4-EVO, * 22.4 version before 22.4R3-S3-EVO, * 23.2 versions before 23.2R2-S1-EVO, * 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-EVO.

Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: A malformed CFM packet or specific transit traffic leads to FPC crash

An Improper Validation of Syntactic Correctness of Input vulnerability in the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series with MPC10/11 or LC9600, MX304, and Junos OS Evolved on ACX Series and PTX Series allows an unauthenticated, network based attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). This issue can occur in two scenarios: 1. If a device, which is configured with SFLOW and ECMP, receives specific valid transit traffic, which is subject to sampling, the packetio process crashes, which in turn leads to an evo-aftman crash and causes the FPC to stop working until it is restarted. (This scenario is only applicable to PTX but not to ACX or MX.) 2. If a device receives a malformed CFM packet on an interface configured with CFM, the packetio process crashes, which in turn leads to an evo-aftman crash and causes the FPC to stop working until it is restarted. Please note that the CVSS score is for the formally more severe issue 1. The CVSS score for scenario 2. is: 6.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) This issue affects Junos OS: * All versions before 21.2R3-S4, * 21.4 versions before 21.4R2, * 22.2 versions before 22.2R3-S2;  Junos OS Evolved: * All versions before 21.2R3-S8-EVO, * 21.4 versions before 21.4R2-EVO.

When a malformed BGP UPDATE packet is received over an established BGP session, RPD crashes and restarts. Continuous receipt of the malformed BGP UPDATE messages will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition for impacted devices. This issue affects eBGP and iBGP, in both IPv4 and IPv6 implementations. This issue requires a remote attacker to have at least one established BGP session. This issue affects: Juniper Networks Junos OS: * All versions earlier than 20.4R3-S9; * 21.2 versions earlier than 21.2R3-S7; * 21.3 versions earlier than 21.3R3-S5; * 21.4 versions earlier than 21.4R3-S6; * 22.1 versions earlier than 22.1R3-S4; * 22.2 versions earlier than 22.2R3-S3; * 22.3 versions earlier than 22.3R3-S2; * 22.4 versions earlier than 22.4R3; * 23.2 versions earlier than 23.2R2. Junos OS Evolved: A high rate of SSH connections causes a Denial of Service

A Missing Release of Resource after Effective Lifetime vulnerability the xinetd process, responsible for spawning SSH daemon (sshd) instances, of Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated network-based attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by blocking SSH access for legitimate users. Continued receipt of these connections will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. The issue is triggered when a high rate of concurrent SSH requests are received and terminated in a specific way, causing xinetd to crash, and leaving defunct sshd processes. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability blocks both SSH access as well as services which rely upon SSH, such as SFTP, and Netconf over SSH. Once the system is in this state, legitimate users will be unable to SSH to the device until service is manually restored.  See WORKAROUND section below. Administrators can monitor an increase in defunct sshd processes by utilizing the CLI command:   > show system processes | match sshd   root   25219 30901 0 Jul16 ?       00:00:00 [sshd] <defunct> This issue affects Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved: * All versions prior to 21.4R3-S7-EVO * 22.3-EVO versions prior to 22.3R2-S2-EVO, 22.3R3-S2-EVO; * 22.4-EVO versions prior to 22.4R3-EVO; * 23.2-EVO versions prior to 23.2R2-EVO. Junos OS: SRX Series, MX Series with MX-SPC3 or MS-MPC: Receipt of multiple specific SIP messages results in flow management process crash

A Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition ('Infinite Loop') vulnerability in the SIP application layer gateway (ALG) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series and MX Series with MX-SPC3 or MS-MPC allows an unauthenticated network-based attacker sending specific SIP messages over TCP to crash the flow management process, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS). On SRX Series, and MX Series with MX-SPC3 or MS-MPC service cards, receipt of multiple SIP messages causes the SIP headers to be parsed incorrectly, eventually causing a continuous loop and leading to a watchdog timer expiration, crashing the flowd process on SRX Series and MX Series with MX-SPC3, or mspmand process on MX Series with MS-MPC. This issue only occurs over TCP. SIP messages sent over UDP cannot trigger this issue. This issue affects Junos OS on SRX Series and MX Series with MX-SPC3 and MS-MPC: * all versions before 21.2R3-S10,  * from 21.4 before 21.4R3-S12,  * from 22.4 before 22.4R3-S8,  * from 23.2 before 23.2R2-S5,  * from 23.4 before 23.4R2-S6,  * from 24.2 before 24.2R2-S3,  * from 24.4 before 24.4R2-S1,  * from 25.2 before 25.2R1-S1, 25.2R2.

Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: Receipt of a specific malformed BGP update causes the session to reset

An Improper Handling of Exceptional Conditions vulnerability in the Routing Protocol Daemon (RPD) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an attacker sending a specific malformed BGP update message to cause the session to reset, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS). Continued receipt and processing of these malformed BGP update messages will create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. Upon receipt of a BGP update message over an established BGP session containing a specifically malformed tunnel encapsulation attribute, when segment routing is enabled, internal processing of the malformed attributes within the update results in improper parsing of remaining attributes, leading to session reset: BGP SEND Notification code 3 (Update Message Error) subcode 1 (invalid attribute list) Only systems with segment routing enabled are vulnerable to this issue. This issue affects eBGP and iBGP, in both IPv4 and IPv6 implementations, and requires a remote attacker to have at least one established BGP session. This issue affects: Junos OS: * All versions before 21.4R3-S8, * from 22.2 before 22.2R3-S4, * from 22.3 before 22.3R3-S3, * from 22.4 before 22.4R3-S3, * from 23.2 before 23.2R2-S1, * from 23.4 before 23.4R1-S2, 23.4R2. Junos OS: SRX4600 Series - A high amount of specific traffic causes packet drops and an eventual PFE crash

An Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer vulnerability in the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) of Juniper Networks Junos OS allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a Denial of Service (DoS). When a high amount of specific traffic is received on a SRX4600 device, due to an error in internal packet handling, a consistent rise in CPU memory utilization occurs. This results in packet drops in the traffic and eventually the PFE crashes. A manual reboot of the PFE will be required to restore the device to original state. This issue affects Junos OS:   * 21.2 before 21.2R3-S7, * 21.4 before 21.4R3-S6,  * 22.1 before 22.1R3-S5, * 22.2 before 22.2R3-S3, * 22.3 before 22.3R3-S2, * 22.4 before 22.4R3, * 23.2 before 23.2R1-S2, 23.2R2.

Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: BGP update with a set of specific attributes causes rpd crash

A Buffer Over-read vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). When an affected device receives a BGP update with a set of specific optional transitive attributes over an established peering session, rpd will crash and restart when attempting to advertise the received information to another peer. This issue can only happen if one or both of the BGP peers of the receiving session are non-4-byte-AS capable as determined from the advertised capabilities during BGP session establishment. Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved default behavior is 4-byte-AS capable unless this has been specifically disabled by configuring: [ protocols bgp ... disable-4byte-as ] Established BGP sessions can be checked by executing: show bgp neighbor <IP address> | match "4 byte AS" This issue affects: Junos OS:  * all versions before 22.4R3-S8, * 23.2 versions before 23.2R2-S5, * 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-S6, * 24.2 versions before 24.2R2-S2, * 24.4 versions before 24.4R2; Junos OS Evolved:  * all versions before 22.4R3-S8-EVO, * 23.2 versions before 23.2R2-S5-EVO, * 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-S6-EVO, * 24.2 versions before 24.2R2-S2-EVO, * 24.4 versions before 24.4R2-EVO.

Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: With traceoptions enabled, receipt of malformed AS PATH causes RPD crash

A Use After Free vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved allows an attacker sending a BGP update with a specifically malformed AS PATH to cause rpd to crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS). Continuous receipt of the malformed AS PATH attribute will cause a sustained DoS condition. On all Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved platforms, the rpd process will crash and restart when a specifically malformed AS PATH is received within a BGP update and traceoptions are enabled. This issue only affects systems with BGP traceoptions enabled and requires a BGP session to be already established. Systems without BGP traceoptions enabled are not impacted by this issue. This issue affects:  Junos OS: * All versions before 21.2R3-S9,  * all versions of 21.4, * from 22.2 before 22.2R3-S6,  * from 22.4 before 22.4R3-S5,  * from 23.2 before 23.2R2-S3,  * from 23.4 before 23.4R2-S4,  * from 24.2 before 24.2R2;  Junos OS Evolved:  * All versions before 22.4R3-S5-EVO,  * from 23.2-EVO before 23.2R2-S3-EVO,  * from 23.4-EVO before 23.4R2-S4-EVO,  * from 24.2-EVO before 24.2R2-EVO. NFX250, NFX350, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series: Certain genuine traffic received by the Junos OS device will be discarded instead of forwarded.

An improper interpretation conflict of certain data between certain software components within the Juniper Networks Junos OS devices does not allow certain traffic to pass through the device upon receipt from an ingress interface filtering certain specific types of traffic which is then being redirected to an egress interface on a different VLAN. This causes a Denial of Service (DoS) to those clients sending these particular types of traffic. Such traffic being sent by a client may appear genuine, but is non-standard in nature and should be considered as potentially malicious, and can be targeted to the device, or destined through it for the issue to occur. This issues affects IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. An indicator of compromise may be found by checking log files. You may find that traffic on the input interface has 100% of traffic flowing into the device, yet the egress interface shows 0 pps leaving the device. For example: [show interfaces "interface" statistics detail] Output between two interfaces would reveal something similar to: Ingress, first interface: -------------------- Interface Link Input packets (pps) Output packets (pps) et-0/0/0 Up 9999999999 (9999) 1 (0) -------------------- Egress, second interface: -------------------- Interface Link Input packets (pps) Output packets (pps) et-0/0/1 Up 0 (0) 9999999999 (0) -------------------- Dropped packets will not show up in DDoS monitoring/protection counters as issue is not caused by anti-DDoS protection mechanisms. This issue affects: Juniper Networks Junos OS: 17.3 versions prior to 17.3R3-S7 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX4600; 17.4 versions prior to 17.4R2-S11, 17.4R3-S3 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX4600; 18.1 versions prior to 18.1R3-S9 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4600; 18.2 versions prior to 18.2R3-S3 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600; 18.3 versions prior to 18.3R3-S1 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series; 18.4 versions prior to 18.4R1-S5, 18.4R2-S3, 18.4R3 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series; 19.1 versions prior to 19.1R1-S5, 19.1R2-S1, 19.1R3 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series; 19.2 versions prior to 19.2R1-S5, 19.2R2 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series; 19.3 versions prior to 19.3R2-S3, 19.3R3 on NFX250, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series; 19.4 versions prior to 19.4R1-S2, 19.4R2 on NFX250, NFX350, QFX5K Series, EX2300 Series, EX3400 Series, EX4300 Multigigabit, EX4600 Series. Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: MX Series with MPC10/MPC11, PTX10003, PTX10008: Line card may crash and restart when traffic is hitting a firewall filter having a term with syslog action configured

A vulnerability in the processing of traffic matching a firewall filter containing a syslog action in Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series with MPC10/MPC11 cards installed, PTX10003 and PTX10008 Series devices, will cause the line card to crash and restart, creating a Denial of Service (DoS). Continued receipt and processing of packets matching the firewall filter can create a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. When traffic hits the firewall filter, configured on lo0 or any physical interface on the line card, containing a term with a syslog action (e.g. 'term <name> then syslog'), the affected line card will crash and restart, impacting traffic processing through the ports of the line card. This issue only affects MX Series routers with MPC10 or MPC11 line cards, and PTX10003 or PTX10008 Series packet transport routers. No other platforms or models of line cards are affected by this issue. Note: This issue has also been identified and described in technical service bulletin TSB17931 (login required). This issue affects: Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series: 19.3 versions prior to 19.3R3-S2; 19.4 versions prior to 19.4R3-S2; 20.1 versions prior to 20.1R3; 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R2-S2, 20.2R3; 20.3 versions prior to 20.3R3; 20.4 versions prior to 20.4R2. Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved on PTX10003, PTX10008: All versions prior to 20.4R2-EVO. This issue does not affect Juniper Networks Junos OS versions prior to 19.3R1.
