Solutions

This issue is fixed in PAN-OS 10.1.14-h8, PAN-OS 10.2.10-h12, PAN-OS 11.1.5, PAN-OS 11.2.3, and all later PAN-OS versions. Note: PAN-OS 11.0 reached the end of life (EOL) on November 17, 2024, so we do not intend to provide a fix for this release. Prisma Access customers using DNS Security with affected PAN-OS versions should apply one of the workarounds provided below. We will perform upgrades in two phases for impacted customers on the weekends of January 3rd and January 10th. You can request an expedited Prisma Access upgrade to the latest PAN-OS version by opening a support case https://support.paloaltonetworks.com/Support/Index . In addition, to provide the most seamless upgrade path for our customers, we are making fixes available for other TAC-preferred and commonly deployed maintenance releases. Additional PAN-OS 11.1 fixes: * 11.1.2-h16 * 11.1.3-h13 * 11.1.4-h7 * 11.1.5 Additional PAN-OS 10.2 fixes: * 10.2.8-h19 * 10.2.9-h19 * 10.2.10-h12 * 10.2.11-h10 * 10.2.12-h4 * 10.2.13-h2 * 10.2.14 Additional PAN-OS 10.1 fixes: * 10.1.14-h8 * 10.1.15 Additional PAN-OS fixes only applicable to Prisma Access: * 10.2.9-h19 * 10.2.10-h12

Configurations

Both of the following must be true for PAN-OS software to be affected: * Either a DNS Security License or an Advanced DNS Security License must be applied, AND * DNS Security logging must be enabled.

Workarounds

If your firewall running the vulnerable PAN-OS versions stops responding or reboots unexpectedly and you cannot immediately apply a fix, apply a workaround below based on your deployment. Unmanaged NGFWs, NGFW managed by Panorama, or Prisma Access managed by Panorama * For each Anti-spyware profile, navigate to Objects → Security Profiles → Anti-spyware → (select a profile) → DNS Policies → DNS Security. * Change the Log Severity to "none" for all configured DNS Security categories. * Commit the changes. Remember to revert the Log Severity settings once the fixes are applied. NGFW managed by Strata Cloud Manager (SCM) You can choose one of the following mitigation options: * Option 1: Disable DNS Security logging directly on each NGFW by following the PAN-OS steps above. * Option 2: Disable DNS Security logging across all NGFWs in your tenant by opening a support case https://support.paloaltonetworks.com/Support/Index . Prisma Access managed by Strata Cloud Manager (SCM) Until we perform an upgrade of your Prisma Access tenant, you can disable DNS Security logging across all NGFWs in your tenant by opening a support case https://support.paloaltonetworks.com/Support/Index . If you would like to expedite the upgrade, please make a note of that in the support case.

Unauthenticated Denial of Service (DOS) attack in AnythingLLM

AnythingLLM is an application that turns any document, resource, or piece of content into context that any LLM can use as references during chatting. In versions prior to commit `08d33cfd8` an unauthenticated API route (file export) can allow attacker to crash the server resulting in a denial of service attack. The “data-export” endpoint is used to export files using the filename parameter as user input. The endpoint takes the user input, filters it to avoid directory traversal attacks, fetches the file from the server, and afterwards deletes it. An attacker can trick the input filter mechanism to point to the current directory, and while attempting to delete it the server will crash as there is no error-handling wrapper around it. Moreover, the endpoint is public and does not require any form of authentication, resulting in an unauthenticated Denial of Service issue, which crashes the instance using a single HTTP packet. This issue has been addressed in commit `08d33cfd8`. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

An Improper Check for Unusual or Exceptional Conditions vulnerability in Routing Protocol Daemon (RPD) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows a network-based, unauthenticated attacker to cause rpd to crash, leading to Denial of Service (DoS). On all Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved platforms, when NETCONF and gRPC are enabled, and a specific query is executed via Dynamic Rendering (DREND), rpd will crash and restart. Continuous execution of this specific query will cause a sustained Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This issue affects: Juniper Networks Junos OS * 22.2 versions earlier than 22.2R2-S2, 22.2R3; * 22.3 versions earlier than 22.3R2, 22.3R3. Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved * 22.2 versions earlier than 22.2R2-S2-EVO, 22.2R3-EVO; * 22.3 versions earlier than 22.3R2-EVO, 22.3R3-EVO. This issue does not affect Juniper Networks: Junos OS versions earlier than 22.2R1; Junos OS Evolved versions earlier than 22.2R1-EVO.

Incorrect handling of H/2 GOAWAY followed by SETTINGS frames

Envoy is an open source L7 proxy and communication bus designed for large modern service oriented architectures. In affected versions Envoy transitions a H/2 connection to the CLOSED state when it receives a GOAWAY frame without any streams outstanding. The connection state is transitioned to DRAINING when it receives a SETTING frame with the SETTINGS_MAX_CONCURRENT_STREAMS parameter set to 0. Receiving these two frames in the same I/O event results in abnormal termination of the Envoy process due to invalid state transition from CLOSED to DRAINING. A sequence of H/2 frames delivered by an untrusted upstream server will result in Denial of Service in the presence of untrusted **upstream** servers. Envoy versions 1.19.1, 1.18.4 contain fixes to stop processing of pending H/2 frames after connection transition to the CLOSED state.

Uncaught Exception in engine.io

Engine.IO is the implementation of transport-based cross-browser/cross-device bi-directional communication layer for Socket.IO. A specially crafted HTTP request can trigger an uncaught exception on the Engine.IO server, thus killing the Node.js process. This impacts all the users of the `engine.io` package starting from version `4.0.0`, including those who uses depending packages like `socket.io`. Versions prior to `4.0.0` are not impacted. A fix has been released for each major branch, namely `4.1.2` for the `4.x.x` branch, `5.2.1` for the `5.x.x` branch, and `6.1.1` for the `6.x.x` branch. There is no known workaround except upgrading to a safe version.

Improper Check or Handling of Exceptional Conditions in apollo-router

The Apollo Router is a configurable, high-performance graph router written in Rust to run a federated supergraph that uses Apollo Federation. Affected versions are subject to a Denial-of-Service (DoS) type vulnerability which causes the Router to panic and terminate when a multi-part response is sent. When users send queries to the router that uses the `@defer` or Subscriptions, the Router will panic. To be vulnerable, users of Router must have a coprocessor with `coprocessor.supergraph.response` configured in their `router.yaml` and also to support either `@defer` or Subscriptions. Apollo Router version 1.33.0 has a fix for this vulnerability which was introduced in PR #4014. Users are advised to upgrade. Users unable to upgrade should avoid using the coprocessor supergraph response or disable defer and subscriptions support and continue to use the coprocessor supergraph response.
